Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars ...wonderful... absolutely wonderful.......2004-04-23

I don't know where this band came from, but this album impressed me a lot. How did they do these drums?! They're awesome! Keyboards aren't very apparent, but they do their job. At Vance isn't like Hammerfall, who doesn't use keyboards, or Sonata Arctica, who used loads of keyboards. They're somewhere in between. Back to the drums... they remind me of Manowar or Sentenced. They're powerful, but not Finnvox-like. Finnvox is where Sonata Arctica, Children of Bodom, Nightwish, and Stratovarius record, if you didn't know.

You probably don't know them (yet), but this album reminded me of Crytal Ball's "Virtual Empire". These 2 albums aren't rock, fantasy metal, or anything in the progressive area. Lyric wise, think of ... ... oh I don't know - I'm not good with lyrics. But I'll tell you that they do have a more rockish feeling to them - not metal. I guess you could say they're like Sentenced and HIM.

There are songs of all paces. The album has 2 hyper speed songs and a ballad. As a matter of fact, the ballad is surrounded by the 2 hyper speed songs! You certainly don't see that too often... Epics: There are none. There isn't an intro, but track 10 is a short... I think it's a guitar solo. Standout tracks: 1 and 8. Fallen Angel (1) is absolutely incredible. And 8 is the ballad, Shining Star. This is almost classic rock-ish. The title track is fun to listen to at first, but I got tired of it quickly. It also gets a bit repetitive.

Between the drums, Fallen Angel, and Shining Star, I highly recommend this to any fan of Sonata Arctica, Helloween, Stratovarius, or Hammerfall. This is a very decent metal album.

Oh yeah! I almost forgot - the bonus disc. There are only 3 songs, and I think they're with a different singer. They're actually better than the other 8 songs on the first disc. But... don't go off buying this just cause there's 2 discs.

Look, this is no Keeper of the Seven Keys, Against the Elements Part I, or Hatebreeder, but I'm sure there will be at least 1 song that will impress you, preferably Fallen Angel. You can download half of it off their website. Same with the title track. Why not go and listen?

If you get the time, go read some of my other reviews and say if they were helpful or not. Thanks for reading.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Power Metal releases in ages........2003-10-24

This album has REALLY suprised me. I bought it after hearing a couple of songs which sounded good. After listening to the whole thing a few times I can safely say it's truely awesome.
The band had a very mature sound for a power metal band, the lyrics are less cliched than most, and this is the first album to feature the singing talents of Mats Leven, a former Yngwie Malmsteen singer. Mats does a fantastic job, his voice has lots of character, unlike a lot of boring power metal vocalists. The guitarist in At Vance is amazing too!!!

The thing that makes this a great album though is the songs. Very well written, catchy but not annoying, with a nice balance between mid pace songs, and fast double bass drum speed ones.

If you love power metal, get this cd, you won't regret it!
