Best Band In Metal........2006-09-07
Puts me to sleep, with its trite boredom........2003-04-15
This band should keep in the shadows........2001-12-07
Ingredients:
(1) A hideous singer with cringe-inducing vibrato and whiny tone
(2) Miserable songwriting skills
(3) Shameful lyrics
(4) A band of metal hacks masquerading as a progressive/power metal outfit.
Directions:
(1) Take a liberal quantity of sterile traditional metal and drain it of all melody, good arrangements, and talent. Mold into indistinguishable clumps of like-sounding songs.
(2) Write some absurd lyrics, such as: "Welcome to the pride of our super-bio-crystal | Please just take a seat, you'll need one." Add these lyrics to the songs for pizzazz.
(3) Find a whiny metal singer to wail about these silly lyrics. Make sure he doesn't have any skill. He must have uncontrollable vibrato that makes people want to put their head underwater. Also, you must take away any sense of melody from the vocal lines. If you put melody into the vocals, you will not produce an album like Corruption Within.
(4) Mix everything into an interchangeable sludge of poorly produced, poorly performed songs.
(5) Add a bonus track of a genuinely good song by a genuinely good band to gain credence. In particular, you should use Queensryche's classic power metal tune "Queen of the Reich." For this song to sound like the one from Corruption Within, you must make the singing sound like a Geoff Tate parody and have sloppy playing.
Follow these instructions perfectly and with a bit of luck you too can have an album like Shadow Keep's Corruption Within.
A failed attempt at impressing me........2001-05-26
Briefly about the composition, the chord arrangments all sound familiar and nothing really captured my attention. I listened to this album 3 times and for the life of me cannot figure out what the other reviewer heard. If you want to hear an excellent debut album from a new artist listen to Spiral Architect's "A Sceptic's Universe.
Anyway, back to the alleged lead vocalist. He seems to like to go from his lower range straight up into the the higher notes frequently. I am wondering if he even has a mid range. Also, note that everything high is not only strained falsetto, but also flat on the tail end of nearly every note. Perhaps with some vocal lessons he may be able to improve for their next album if they last that long.
My band played a lot of Queensryche covers in the late 80's and it saddens me to hear a band like this attempting to cover "Queen of the Reich" with this lead vocalist. They also managed to completely butcher the guitar leads.
Besides, Shadow Gallery is the only band that deserves a name, which includes the word shadow. I despise bands who cannot come up with an original name that does not include another band's partial-title. Come on guys do some research!
best debut album ive ever heard.......2001-03-20
