5 out of 5 stars Best Band In Metal........2006-09-07

This is one of the best albums I have ever heard. A reincarnation of Queensryche and Fate's Warning in their early stages. They write extremely intelligent, thought provoking lyrics and melodies. Listen to Dark Tower, Mark of Usurper, Metal Morale, Inner Sanctum, and you will see exactly what i mean. I don't know how anyone can call the production bad, unless you like listening to 8-track Garage records. The singer Rogue, is a great vocalist with a style similar to David Wayne (Metal Church). His style is perfect for this genre of music, and is full of emotion (althouh he is no longer in the band). This is the band I've been looking for- can't wait for their upcomming release The Hourglass Effect. Be sure to check out the hidden track-a cover of Queen Of The Reich.

2 out of 5 stars Puts me to sleep, with its trite boredom........2003-04-15

I hate to jump on the "let's bash Shadowkeep" bandwagon, but this release really let me down. It is the case of a label signing too many bands, even when bands like this are NOT ready to be signed. I think they could've released this as their FIRST demo, not their debut album and gotten away with it. Back to the drawing board for these guys.

Corruption Within - A Recipe

Ingredients:
(1) A hideous singer with cringe-inducing vibrato and whiny tone
(2) Miserable songwriting skills
(3) Shameful lyrics
(4) A band of metal hacks masquerading as a progressive/power metal outfit.

Directions:
(1) Take a liberal quantity of sterile traditional metal and drain it of all melody, good arrangements, and talent. Mold into indistinguishable clumps of like-sounding songs.

(2) Write some absurd lyrics, such as: "Welcome to the pride of our super-bio-crystal | Please just take a seat, you'll need one." Add these lyrics to the songs for pizzazz.

(3) Find a whiny metal singer to wail about these silly lyrics. Make sure he doesn't have any skill. He must have uncontrollable vibrato that makes people want to put their head underwater. Also, you must take away any sense of melody from the vocal lines. If you put melody into the vocals, you will not produce an album like Corruption Within.

(4) Mix everything into an interchangeable sludge of poorly produced, poorly performed songs.

(5) Add a bonus track of a genuinely good song by a genuinely good band to gain credence. In particular, you should use Queensryche's classic power metal tune "Queen of the Reich." For this song to sound like the one from Corruption Within, you must make the singing sound like a Geoff Tate parody and have sloppy playing.

Follow these instructions perfectly and with a bit of luck you too can have an album like Shadow Keep's Corruption Within.

2 out of 5 stars A failed attempt at impressing me........2001-05-26

Excuse me for intruding on the last review submitted. However, I feel that it is my duty for those of you with an educated ear, to inform you that this band needs to re-think their chord arrangements as well as their lead singer.

Briefly about the composition, the chord arrangments all sound familiar and nothing really captured my attention. I listened to this album 3 times and for the life of me cannot figure out what the other reviewer heard. If you want to hear an excellent debut album from a new artist listen to Spiral Architect's "A Sceptic's Universe.

Anyway, back to the alleged lead vocalist. He seems to like to go from his lower range straight up into the the higher notes frequently. I am wondering if he even has a mid range. Also, note that everything high is not only strained falsetto, but also flat on the tail end of nearly every note. Perhaps with some vocal lessons he may be able to improve for their next album if they last that long.

My band played a lot of Queensryche covers in the late 80's and it saddens me to hear a band like this attempting to cover "Queen of the Reich" with this lead vocalist. They also managed to completely butcher the guitar leads.

Besides, Shadow Gallery is the only band that deserves a name, which includes the word shadow. I despise bands who cannot come up with an original name that does not include another band's partial-title. Come on guys do some research!

5 out of 5 stars best debut album ive ever heard.......2001-03-20

i listen to slayer, blind guardian, nevermore, helloween, and virgin steele so i know metal. shadowkeep blew me away with this 11 song debut. i dont rate a album perfect unless all the tunes are good and this baby is flawless. there are no ballads here plenty of double bass drumming and a singer that rates with warrel dane and hansi kusch as metals finest. one listen and i was hooked. no need to have it grow on me because its that powerful. my 3 favorite songs on here are dark tower, inner sanctum, and the 7 minute killer "murder". kiddies put your skip buttons away cause this is a perfect metal album. incredible that this is a debut.
