Customer Reviews:
Finally, a strong, complete album.......2001-07-10
This album almost holds up to the Schenker titles from the pre-McAuley glory days. The title track has one of the best choruses ever in a Schenker song, and the instrumental showcases what a good, clear-as-a-bell tone is like. The vocalist and quality of lyrics are unusually strong as well.
This may be the last major-label quality solo effort we're going to see from Schenker for awhile, it's too bad he just didn't stop here.
A Must Have Schenker Album!.......2000-01-07
If you're like me, no recent MSG album has come close to the first two MSG albums (The Michael Schenker Group, and MSG). But I must say, I just got around to picking up Written in the Sand and I was pleasantly surprised! Michael hired a swedish (I think) vocalist that I seem to recognize from Gary Moore's album Dirty Fingers. I prefer his voice over all the recent blokes. There are some good odd-time signature riff songs like some on "Unforgiven" which I like a lot. The title track, Written in the Sand has an infectous grove. It is a rarity that Michael's writing style produces something so complete. He normally comes up with riffs and then it is the singer's responsibilty to write a vocal line around what Michael has already written. The title track sounds like both music and vocal line were written simultaneously-very cohesive. The lyrical content is much deeper than the typical girl-boy/party-all-the-time-lyric. A nice change. The re-make of Into the Arena is other-worldly! Not because of the guitar (which is played just like the original-awesome!) but because of the incredible double kickdrum stuff and the excellent bass solo! (Moe Foster/Simon Phillips eat your heart out!) it is an excellent effort and is worthy to be in every Schenker fan's CD collection!
A good solid album.......1999-07-22
After I have listened to the album a few times it has grown on me. It is not one you get on the first listen. Micheal even sounds a little like Eddie Van Halen in the song Esssenz..which is ok. If your looking for an album with his brillant solo's this is not the one because it is more song oriented..which is ok..you can't write the same thigs all the time. If your looking for an album with good middle of the road metal then this album is for you. It is better than the last two albums he did with Robin Maccauley but not as good as Walk on Water with UFO. It is good but not great. It does feature two re-makes off of first album which is a great example of his solo mastery.
