Customer Reviews:
Motorhead releases their classic for the ages.......2006-02-05
Ace Of Spades (1980.) The fourth Motorhead studio album.
INTRODUCTION:
By 1980, Motorhead had been together rocking out for nearly half a decade. In the short time, they had recorded three albums - all of which were excellent. However, despite their growing reputation, the band still hadn't made that worldwide impact that would immortalize them in the hearts of headbangers everywhere. But, in 1980, that release finally came. When Ace Of Spades arrived, the world was taken by storm. It was the finest heavy metal record many a hard rock fan had ever heard! With the title track and a plethora of other, lesser hits, the album immortalized the band practically overnight. Read on, and see if the album is as good as everyone says!
OVERVIEW:
Motorhead released their fourth album, Ace Of Spades, on November 8, 1980. Vic Maile served as producer for the album sessions. The band consisted of the classic lineup of Ian "Lemmy" Kilmister on bass and vocals, "Fast" Eddie Clarke on vocals, and "Philthy Animal" Phil Taylor on drums. Album tracklist consists of Ace Of Spades, Love Me Like A Reptile, Shoot You In The Back, Live To Win, Fast And Loose, (We Are) The Road Crue, Fire Fire, Jailbait, Dance, Bite The Bullet., The Chase Is Better Than The Catch, and The Hammer.
REVIEW:
Whenever Motorhead comes up, this is the album that comes up. Plain and simple. Motorhead made their classic for the ages here, and it isn't hard to see why so many fans of the band, casual and die-hard alike, deem this the band's finest hour. It's tough to pick a favorite Motorhead album since all of them rule in their own way, but this is pure heavy metal excellence. From start to finish, the band rocks out the way heavy metal was meant to be heard. And, more importantly, the album deserves all of the credit it gets! Lets take a look at the tracks that comprise this classic album.
-SIDE A-
-Ace Of Spades: This song really requires no summary or comments from me. It's Motorhead's biggest hit, and the one song everyone knows by the band. It's also quite possibly their finest hour. With a hard and heavy fast-paced sound and memorable lyrics from start to finish, it is easy to see how this song gained its lofty reputation. THIS is the way to start an album! A classic for the ages, for all the right reasons.
-Love Me Like A Reptile: Here's another hard and heavy rocker done the Motorhead way. The song became a fairly big hit for the band, albeit not nearly as big as the classic title track. Still, the song rocks hard all the way through and never lets up. The band is in their prime all the way through, making for another memorable rocker you can't help but love.
-Shoot You In The Back: With the album's cover art, it's only natural they'd do a song with a western theme to it. Sure enough, they did. It's another hard and heavy rocker, done the vintage Motorhead way. Clarke's riffs in this song are amazing, as usual. The band rarely fails to please and this is no exception to that age-old rule.
-Live To Win: Fast and heavy are the two things Motorhead does best, and there are many showcases of this. Here we have another example of that rule. The whole band rocks hard once again - Kilmister's bass playing is particularly excellent here - it's a shame it usually gets overlooked in favor of his vocals! Another excellent song.
-Fast And Loose: Quite honestly, this song's title describes the song itself perfectly. The band does another fast-paced rocker, but they just kick back, rocking hard and having a good time. The end result is another classic Motorhead rocker. Once again, the band succeeds on all fronts.
-(We Are) The Road Crew: Here's one of those songs that became a minor hit for the group. It never gained any major fame, but it holds a special place in the heart of many a Motorhead fan. The lyrics, rather obviously, follow the exploits of a band's road crew. The song was likely a dedication to the group's roadies. Great song.
-SIDE B-
-Fire Fire: This is a catchy rocker, and there's no denying it. Despite its relatively unknown reputation, the song is an awesome, fast-paced rocker with plenty of catchy hooks - both vocal-wise and melody-wise. If the song had been released as a single, I'll bet it would have sold extremely well. It's another solid addition to the Motorhead catalogue.
-Jailbait: Many of the songs on this album became minor hits - songs that are Motorhead fan favorites, but relatively unknown to the mostly casual fans. This is one of those songs. Rocking out hard and fast is Motorhead's specialty, and they spare no expense and letting fans know it once again.
-Dance: Motorhead is one of the few bands that managed to create songs that were fast and heavy, but at the same time, extremely catchy. This is one of those songs. With catchy melodies and vocals alike, the whole band succeeds on every way once again, making another excellent composition.
-Bite The Bullet: It's a known fact that the harder and heavier a Motorhead song is, the more the fans love it. Sure enough, this is one of those songs that proves that point once more. Clarke's guitar playing is excellent as usual, not failing to please the listeners. There are many awesome tracks on here - this is one of the many.
-The Chase Is Better Than The Catch: The minor hits on this album were plentiful in number - this is one of the many. Kilmister's lyrics are always excellent and fun to listen to - both what he sings, and how he sings it. This time around, it's not much different. One of the many reasons many a Motorhead fan calls this album the band's finest hour.
-The Hammer: Closing out the album for the band is one of the hardest and heaviest compositions present. A band should always finish off an album with a song that will leave a lasting impression on the listener - and sure enough, they manage to do that here. Motorhead's most popular album ends with a bang - and sure enough, it's one the listener will remember.
OVERALL:
There you have it - Motorhead's classic for the ages. This is the album everyone remembers the classic heavy metal trio for, and it isn't hard at all to see why after giving the album a listen. Whether you're a die-hard fan of the trio or just a casual one, this album is an essential purchase. Don't hesitate to add this one to your collection. If you're a fan of heavy metal, you will not be disappointed with this album. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
