Best Hawkwind live album of the 90s............2005-10-03

This is yet another impressive live album from Hawkwind. By the time this was recorded in 1993, Hawkwind was down to a trio: Dave Brock, Alan Davey and Richard Chadwick, who played like they were a six piece band. I'm guessing that if one didn't know this was just three people, they may think it was five or six people at times. (Did that make sense, or should I rewrite this part?)

It is a somewhat spotty album, but it has more good points than bad points and the good songs more than make up for the weaker ones. The album starts off with another one of Alan Davey's spacy new age instrumentals, then goes right into a very slowed down, almost dirge-like version of ' Quark, Strangeness and Charm '. This version has barely anything in common with the original, which was very upbeat and rocking and silly. They strip the song of any sense of humor here, which is a crying shame.

The version of 'LSD' is shorter here, but otherwise not that different than the original. I could do without the reggae influenced ' The Camera That Could Lie ', which I have never liked, but the album improves tremendously after this, starting off with the very slow and moody ' Green Finned Demon ', then the pace picks up (and how!) with the very hard rocking ' Do That ' (otherwise known as ' You Shouldn't Do That ') and the instrumental ' The Day A Wall Came Down ' ( original title: ' It Is The Business Of The Future To Be Dangerous '). Both of these showed that this incarnation of Hawkwind could rock out with the same intensity as earlier line-ups.

The rest of the album has Hawkwind alternating back and forth between short synthesizer instrumentals like ' Berlin Axis ' and ' Wastelands ' and more heavy rock numbers like Bob Calvert's ' The Right Stuff ' and Electric Tepee's ' Right To Decide '. We have a few more retitled songs like ' The Dream Goes On ' ( Iron Dream) and ' The Dream Has Ended ' ( You Know You're Only Dreaming ) and changed songwriting credits. The album actually ends on a very exciting, intense and dramatic note with the last two songs. ' The Dream Has Ended ' builds in energy and intensity as it goes along, then goes into the nearly frightening ' This Future ', which has Dave Brock doing a chilling reading of Bob Calvert's ' Welcome To The Future ' over a very appropriate and fitting background of keyboards. As Brock's last word echoes, the band jams on one chord for about 15 seconds and the album is over (the audience actually adds to this piece, as well). It's tough to describe, but being a nasty, nasty boy, I would say the release at the end is equivalant to an orgasm ( told you I was nasty!)

I have seen Hawkwind live six times and this recording is highly representative of the great show they put on. Next to "Palace Spring," this is the next best "live" Hawkwind recording. This is great space and rock music combined. The way all the music flows together in a current of phantasmagoria is truly mind bending. The first reviewer covered the individual titles real well. A great place to start with Hawkwind or one live recording. Get it.

Hawkwind - 'The Business Trip' (Griffin).......2004-10-06

When I was first informed about this fifteen track CD release,I was wrongfully told that it would be a disc full of remixed tracks by the band's later '70's-early '80's repertoire.That was,of course WAY off.Turns out to be another live effort that's got at least three new/unreleased tunes.My favorites are the two Bob Clavert gems "Quark,Strangeness And Charm" and "Right Stuff" as well as "LSD" and "Green Finned Demon".From l992's 'Electric Teepee' CD,there's the previously mentioned "LSD" and the '90's Hawk classic "Right To Decide".The new(er) tunes include "The Day A Wall Came Down","Berlin Axis" and the jamming "The Dream Has Ended".If you listen REAL good,you just may notice some tidbits of vintage Hawkwind claasics like "You Shouldn't Do That" and "You Know You're Only Dreaming".As for a live album goes,'The Business Trip' is pretty decent.it falls SOMEWHERE between 1973's unbeatable 'Space Ritual' and 'Palace Springs'.Not a bad find.

VERY HOT LIVE ALBUM!.......1998-08-23

Hawkwind Live- The Business Trip: A very worthy capture for any Hawkwind fan, or any rock-loving soul. This is the live Hawkwind concert I wish I had been there to see! The track listing covers a fine Hawkwind assortment of new and classic songs. "Quark, Stangeness & Charm" is a down-home re-make of a classic Hawkwind song from the album of the same name. "LSD" is a true rocker which will get your feet stomping. "The Camera That Could Lie" is a well-done song speaking of the techno-spying done by Big Brother, relenting that there's nothing we can do about it except to "be discreet". Long-time Hawkwind fans will recognize bits of other Hawkwind songs which have been masterfully crafted into the trailing instrumental which leads into an old classic, "Green Finned Demon". Another tastefully done melody. This is followed by a 3-track sequence of "Do That" (a small snippet of a classic), "The Day The Wall Came Down" (a stomping instrumental)& "Berlin Axis" (a peaceful epilog). This then folds into the great Hawkwind classic, "Void Of Golden Light" (formerly called "The Golden Void"). Very suberbly performed! "The Right Stuff" is a rocking song (written by the late Robert Calvert). "Wastelands" is mild synth-instrumental (as is "The Dream Goes On"). The band then rolls into "The Right To Decide", a terrific rocking song destined to be another great Hawkwind Classic! Hawkwind then winds the concert to a close gracefully with "The Dream Has Ended" and "This Future". This CD should be in everybody's collection. Highly recommended!
