3 out of 5 stars Not really Iron Butterfly, but.......2007-03-14

The only connection with Iron Butterfly Is the fact that the one time guitarist and the drummer are on this. Having said that, the guitarist doesn't play the same style or really have the same sound that he did when originally with IB. Also IB was Doug Ingles Baby, he wrote most of the stuff, sang and arranged them. They tended to have loads of upfront organ also. Erik should definitely left the singing to someone else, it isn't very good and not in a bad but good way. It just sounds strained and, well not rocky/bluesy enough. The songs are OK without really being classics and overall the feel is of a solo album with guests. You can go to Go for a download of this and Sun and Steel, you don't really need them. I got them, but except for an occasional dust down, they sit right at the back of my IB collection. They are like the runts of the litter, think of the last Bad Company album, or Genesis Calling all Stations, or In the Hot Seat by ELP. If you are a true fan you gotta get em and then weep. If not, forget then, your life is complete without them

3 out of 5 stars Wouldn't pay too much for it.......2005-05-07

This album isn't as terrible as people may say. But, I wouldn't go out and pay a big import price to get it. I have this one on vinyl myself. The problem with the later Butterfly is that Eric Brann's vocals are lacking and weak. Personally, I prefer sun and steel to this one.

4 out of 5 stars I can't believe you people!.......2005-03-17

A whole lot of the same reviewers that are knocking this album for being different are the same ones who praised that dung-heap of an album Metamorphisis up one side and down the other for the same thing. Okay, fine. This album is for the Iron Butterfly fan with balls enough to step outside of their comfort range. Erik's songs are brilliant, and Hard Miseree is as good of a hard rock song as has ever been written. Ingle's absence proves to be about as relevant as Denny Laine's was in the Moody Blues. One keyboardist was more than able to fill Ingle's shoes...whereas TWO guitar players weren't enough to fill erik's. Admitably, Sun and Steel is better, but this album is not what many of these other IB snobs would have you to believe it is.....that would be the Metamorphisis album.

2 out of 5 stars The Band Passes its Peak.......2004-06-17

Well, anyone who has ever heard this one knows it's questionable. I do like "Am I Down", and especially the slide part by Erik K. Brann. But his vocals aren't even close to professional on any of the tracks. They work on this one tune alone. The rest is not very good. I agree with the one reviewer who said that it's a love/hate affair with "Scorching Beauty". What should have happened was that Erik was given a solo recording deal, and then put this out. It doesn't tarnish the group's reputation, but it comes close, and I'm a huge fan of the band's heyday.

One thing I will say is that the album clips sound like they were transferred to CD and remastered well. I had the original album version, but I don't remember it sounding as clean and modern as the clips on amazon.com. That helps the record out a bit, but no amount of sonic fixing can save the lack of vision which is so obvious when listening to this album. I hate to say it, but it almost sounds like there's a certain lack of talent as well; Erik should not have been singing. That said, he was one of the greatest guitarists from the psychedelic era, and his playing here is just as good (if not as inspired or as adventurour) as on the other albums. Like I said before, the slide on "Am I Down" is awesome, and if any of these tunes were to make a IB compilation, that would be the one. It's the only memorable track here, unfortunately, and I know you agree with me.

5 out of 5 stars Eric Braun the Legend!!.......2004-02-23

No matter how you review this Cd you have to say that Eric was and will always be a pioneer of guitar. Maybe some of the songs here are different than what Butterfly fans are used to but one thing is for sure, its Eric back at the axe. Man give this guy credit, he came into music when people weren't even taking the chances that he took on guitar. He set a alot of standards for players coming up and it is such a shame that he is already gone from us. Wherever your at Eric I know you are playing your a-- off, God Bless you for your contributions to Rock N Roll.
