This album was not all that great. They're like a "punk" band that doesn't have a whole lot of interesting things to say ("cancer food"? "too many guns"? please.) that had one standout track, Like A Drug. And looking at the liner notes for that track, heck it's got an additional producer and remixer for that one track.

There were a lot of bands at that time that the label brought in a producer for the strongest track to get a single on college radio. It worked, the singe got airplay, but I remember when I bought the album and I was like WTF, one strong track that I've already heard 200 times, and the rest is garbage.

In my opinion, this formula is why a lot of bands were "overlooked" at the time.

I remember back in 1990/91 when my local radio station played a song from this group called "They Eat Their Own". The song was "Like A Drug". I was intrigued by the song and eventually bought the casette and was totaly impressed with the whole recording. Laura B. has a good alternative rock voice, and the rest of the band was very talented and original sounding in that time era. Best songs from that debut which I liked were "Better Now", "Like A Drug", "No Right To Kill", "Why Don't You Disagree", and "Video Matyr". Of course the rest of the songs are as good as well, and I thought this group was getting ready to come onto the music scene with the promise of making more music and getting recognition. I don't know what happened, but I guess they didn't sell enough records and eventually disbanded. The irony of all of this is the "alternative rock explosion" that happened in the wake of Nirvana. They Eat Their Own would have easily found a strong fanbase in that timeframe, but I guess this recording was prematurely released to a music world that was still listening to Top 40 and whatever new fad trend styles that was being sold to the public back in 1990/91. They Eat Their Own were truly artistic and creative, and they wrote songs that were intellegent, opiniated, informative, and personal. And they had a good alternative rock guitar sound. They Eat Their Own needs some long overdue recognition, so if you are a fan of alternative rock, especially one fronted by a female lead singer, you won't be disappointed except for the fact that they are no longer in the music scene. Who knows? Maybe some rock group might do a cover song from this dated release.

Another good CD that nobody paid attention to. Released in 1991, this is They Eat Their Own's only recording. After it didn't sell, they were dropped by the record company and broke up. However, this band was good. I bought this the year it came out and have never stopped enjoying it. The music is hard rock with some nice guitar riffs and solid playing. Laura B. doesn't have a booming voice like the Wilson sisters, but she's a capable singer. Lyrically, the songs have a social conscious to them and a bit more melody than some rock bands. Overall, another jammin' CD that for some reason was ignored.
