Another cash-in attempt.......2005-11-06
Prince of Darkness (Released 2005.) An Ozzy Osbourne box set.
INTRODUCTION:
Over the years, Ozzy Osbourne has been a classic metal legend, and the various choices he has made musically has caused him to be loved and hated alike by many. I myself was a huge Ozzy fan up until 2002, when he rerecorded the drums and bass on his classic albums, released the dismal Live At Budokan, and ultimately began to focus on his TV series than his music career. Recently released compilations of Ozzy's material even featured the rerecorded tracks, despite the fact that the lawsuit that caused them to be rerecorded was thrown out (for more info on this, visit the review pages for the rerecorded albums.) In 2005, Ozzy released a four-disc box set. It's not clear whether he did this in an attempt to win back the fans he had lost previously, or just to cash in on people. Read on for my review of Prince of Darkness.
OVERVIEW:
Ozzy Osbourne released the Prince Of Darkness box set in 2005. The set consists of four discs, including two discs of hits, one of collaborations with other artists, and one of previously unreleased cover songs.
REVIEW:
I had high hopes for this set, and the fact of the matter is it falls flat in practically every area. A box set should be one of two things - a set that contains ever last recording an artist ever did along with some bonuses thrown in, to give the listener the artist's complete chronology, or a set of nothing but previously unreleased stuff. Sadly, Ozzy makes the mistake many a musician has, and his box set is an uneven mixture of the two. There's plenty of rare stuff here, but at the same time there's too much previously released stuff too. Discs one and two are practically all previously released recordings, with a demo or rare live version thrown in every now and again. And YES, these feature the butchered, rerecorded versions of the Blizzard and Diary tracks (what's Ozzy's damn problem?) Disc Three is all rare tracks, many of which collaborations with other artists. Two problems here - one, most Ozzy fans already have all these songs on bootlegs, and two, some of them are just godawful (some aren't even rock/metal!) The fourth disc consists entirely of previously unreleased songs, all of which are covers (the final track being the lone exception.) Sadly, these covers are nothing special. You can really tell Ozzy is running out of ideas and musical talent here. Not only are these poor cover versions, but the fact of the matter is that all of these songs have already been covered by other artists. If you're gonna cover songs, cover some no one else has! And why end this disc with the Kelly/Ozzy duet of Changes? Lets face the facts - Ozzy sucks now, and Kelly has ALWAYS sucked (the only reason she is popular is because she is Ozzy's kid!) The original Sabbath version (or even a live solo version) would have been better than this garbage. Another problem with the set overall is bad sound quality - it was obviously rush-recorded, most likely so Ozzy could release it fast and make a quick buck. The price is also ridiculous - this would be a good price if the set was ALL RARITIES, but it's not. Likewise, the liner notes aren't that great. I was especially pissed to see Ozzy talk bad about Ronnie James Dio, especially since Dio, despite being a few years OLDER than Ozzy, is still the superior musician. Dio was the better Black Sabbath singer, too, despite a much shorter stint with the band. I like my four-disc Ozzy rarities bootleg I got on eBay WAY more than I like this box set, so I'll be sticking with it.
OVERALL:
Ozzy never gives his fans what they want anymore, and this box set depicts that like no other Ozzy release so far. If you want Ozzy's rarities, get them on a bootleg. If you want the stuff unavailable outside this set, download it. I wasn't expecting much from this set, and I was right to have low expectations. Ozzy either needs to start listening to his fans, or retire (for real this time.) What's Ozzy's next cash-in gonna be? Nobody knows but him.
EDITION NOTES:
This set was a recent release, so it's still readily available. More likely than not, any store you walk into that has CDs is going to have it in stock. And if not, it won't take you long to find one. Not that you'd want to...
