5 out of 5 stars Solid Sister from start to finish - well recommended.......2005-10-04

First off, I want to state that I have always thought that Twisted Sister was the best band name I had EVER heard. Another band that died before "my" age of CD's - I owned every Twisted Sister album at some point, just not on CD. This disc is remastered, so the songs sound a lot clearer than I remember 'em to be back in the 80's. Every track on here is one I like - there isn't any wasted space with a "new track", or some lame track I don't like. Solid Sister from start to end. Well recommended (unless you don't like 80's metal <g>)

In fact, I'd say that it's far better recommended than the band's "Official" compilation album, "Big Hits & Nasty Cuts". There's an awful lot missing from that one, plus there's live "filler", too. Don't bother with that one, this is the one to get.

4 out of 5 stars A good compilation with obvious shortcomings.......2005-06-15

The Essentials (Covers 1982-1987, Released 2002.) A Twisted Sister hits compilation.

One of the most wrongly-ridiculed bands of the eighties was Twisted Sister. Due to the band's cross-dressing and long hair image, they were dubbed a glam metal band by many, despite the fact that this claim was far from the truth. While the band had the glam image, their music was much harder, heavier, and raw-edged than that of the actual glam bands - Dee Snider and the guys had a sound more similar to the likes of Motorhead than Poison. The band released five studio albums and assorted compilations over the years. Read on for my review of one of the band's hits compilations, The Essentials.

We'll start off by analyzing the good points of this compilation. First of all, it's affordable, and a fairly good value. At the price most stores charge, that's about a dollar a song - not a bad deal at all. You can't have a Twisted Sister hits compilations without the hits We're Not Gonna Take It and I Wanna Rock, and sure enough, you get them both here. Likewise, you get lesser known hits like Under The Blade, You Can't Stop Rock And Roll, Stay Hungry, Leader Of The Pack, and Love Is For Suckers. You also get plenty of underrated masterpieces from the classic metal legends, including I'll Never Grow Up Now and Come Out And Play. If you want a cheap, afforable package with all the big hits, this really is it. But it's not perfect - in fact this package is far from it, in many ways. HOW CAN YOU HAVE A TWISTED SISTER COMPILATION WITHOUT BURN IN HELL!? NOT cool. Likewise, where are What You Don't Know (Can Hurt You) and Hot Love? These omissions are unforgivable, especially the latter, which was a pretty big MTV hit back in the day. And why aren't their eighty minutes of music? I can't give this set a perfect score by any means, but I certainly won't bash it either. This makes a pretty good introduction to the band.

This compilation isn't as readily available as the official Big Hits And Nasty Cuts compilation, which is unfortunate, since this really is the better compilation overall. Still, if you look in enough stores, you'll probably find this one. And since it costs less than Big Hits And Nasty Cuts does, why not just buy this one instead? It's a no brainer.

And there you have it. Is this a perfect compilation? Nope. Does it kill the band's official compilation dead. Oh, yeah. I strongly suggest getting all five classic Twisted Sister albums, but if you can't afford them or you just want a compilation, this set is a pretty good bet. Just don't buy the band's official compilation.

4 out of 5 stars Decent Collection.......2002-12-27

Between this collection and the previously-issued "Big Hits N' Nasty Cuts", there is a fairly definitive Twisted Sister compilation somewhere. And in fact, this is the better of the two, highlighting some of their overlooked harder-edged cuts like "I Believe In Rock N' Roll", "Stay Hungry", "Love Is For Suckers", and "Come Out And Play". However, it does leave out several of their well-known singles like, "I Am (I'm Me)", "Bad Boys of Rock N' Roll", "The Price", "Be Chrool To Your Scuel" and "Hot Love" (all except the last two are available on "Big Hits"). It also improves over "Big Hits" by having remastered sound, and by NOT including a bunch of awful live tracks.

It could be a better collection, but as a primer for Twisted Sister, this is the best place to start. And the price is right, too.

5 out of 5 stars I Wanna Rock!.......2002-09-17

Most of Rhino's new "Essentials" series are skimpy and redundant, but this one works fine, since I prefer the selection here better than that on the existing Twisted Sister hits CD, which has a few too many lengthy live tracks, and the remastered sound is excellent. The curious should definitely start here, the veterans will enjoy this as a one-stop overview. Track listing : 1. We're Not Gonna Take It. 2. I Wanna Rock. 3. Leader Of The Pack. 4. You Can't Stop Rock N' Roll. 5.Stay Hungry. 6. Under The Blade. 7. Come Out And Play. 8. Love Is For Suckers. 9. I Believe In Rock 'N' Roll. 10. The Kids Are Back. 11. I'll Never Grow Up, Now! 12. Shoot 'Em Down.
