Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Another great, but unrecognized Magnum disc.......2006-09-28

Since the 1970's, British rockers Magnum have been quietly releasing some of the finest melodic/pomp/art rock albums that most people have never heard. This is a band that should be talked about in the same breath as bands like Rainbow and Deep Purple, but for whatever reason has gone largely unnoticed.

1994's Rock Art was for quite some time Magnum's final album, with the band members going their separate ways to work on other projects. Like all Magnum albums, Rock Art is highly melodic, very well written, and thoroughly enjoyable. Singer Bob Catley has such a unique, almost otherworldly voice that makes even the most straightforward rock song or ballad sound that much more dramatic and interesting. There are no duds here, but the Tall Ships and On a Christmas Day stand out as Rock Art's better tracks. Some of the songs have less of a pomp feel and are closer to the good time rock & roll that Catley and Clarkin would release in Hard Rain, but overall Rock Art is still an album that should please nearly all Magnum fans.

If Magnum had indeed remained broken up, they could have done a lot worse for a swan song. Fortunately the band reunited and continues to make great music to this day.
