Uneven, but still good.......2006-07-04
This is a bridge between the doomy excellence of "Sad Wings of Destiny" and the unqualified brilliance of "Stained Class". Does it stack up to either of those? Not really, though it is certainly worth checking out.
This is an uneven work. There is plenty of good, heavy stuff on offer. "Sinner" and "Dissident Aggressor" are two of the best songs they've ever done. However, the two ballads, "Last Rose Of Summer" and "Here Come The Tears" let the album down, as does the hit-single attempt of "Diamonds and Rust" (subsequent live versions, both heavy and acoustic, are much better) and the almost danceable (!) "Starbreaker".
You get a taste of what's to come with the heaviness and twin guitar harmonies of "Call For The Priest/Raw Deal" and "Let Us Prey" (the latter giving some personal insight into our Halfie's interests). Downing and Tipton are fine, you can actually hear Ian Hill (unlike throughout most of the '80s) and session drummer Simon Phillips is quite good.
Even though this is not their most consistent work, it is still worthy of a place in your collection.
WAKE UP PEOPLE!!!!!!!.......2004-07-11
i may be only 13 but let me tell you i trully appreciate my music.Sin After Sin of one Judas Priests finest and in my opinion "here come the the tears" to "dissident aggressor" is one of the greatest fade ins of all time. the songs on this album show so much emotion its amazing. its also no wonder how judas priest set the stage for many bands. Thanx for reading this, jake
STRONG - GOOD - SUPREME.......2001-09-18
The first album in Columbia / CBS by Priest. ITýs just astonishing how Judas could always change their sound completely from one album to another, and still sound good !! As for the music here, reviewer DAniel Pinto said it all. I particularly love this album, love all the PRIEST albuns with the following exceptions: TURBO, RAM IT DOWN, JUGULATOR and DEMOLITION. They do not suck, but are not in the same league of their other albuns.
SIMON PHILLIPS STEALS THE SHOW.......2001-08-28
Judas Priest's 3rd album finds themselves in transition for the 3rd time. Priest's early output was amazing in the sense that not only were 2 albums not alike, no 2 songs were alike as well. Ask Judas Priest themselves and they'll tell you THIS is their first album. They got such a bum deal at Gull that they refuse to even ackowledge the 1st 2. SINNER is the bonafide Priest classic on this one, although all the tracks are strong (with the exeption of the wimpy Diamonds and Rust). For a better studio version of DAR check out Hero Hero. Deep Purple's Roger Glover turns in a great job as producer on this one, the slick production makes mincemeat out of the 1st 2. But the real star here is ace session man SIMON PHILLIPS on drums. Simon is without doubt the best drummer that ever participated in a Priest effort. He simply puts on a clinic with each track. Like the previous 2 efforts, this album is all over the place in terms of the style of music they elect to play. With SINNER, JP got away with a cut and paste job and created a metal classic. Close examination reveales that this is just a bunch of stuff strung together. But hey, it works, all those parts are very strong, and KK has a nice, reverb drenched, dive bomber solo in the middle section. A couple of nice time signitures as well. STARBREAKER is a little different than anything JP did before or after SIN After SIN. Sounds a little Deep Purple-ish to me. I suspect this was written in the studio with Rog. The middle (Starbreaker take my hand) is more than a little bluesy and sounds a lot like Blackmore in riffing and guitar sound. LAST ROSE's intro is a cop of an old Hendrix riff that pays big dividends, but again where does this fit in with the Sin after Sin concept? Its a very good song, although its lacks a middle 8, I'm surprised nobody has covered this yet. Okay so far we have a progressive metal epic, a commercial pop song, a blues number, and a ballad. The second half of this album picks up the Sin after Sin Theme again, with LET US PREY. Let us Prey simply rocks. Its an epic that has the structure that SINNER lacks, and a continuation of the Glen Tipton classical style guitar break that you hear in the 2nd lead in TYRANT, the 2nd lead in EXCITER, and also in parts of FREEWHEEL BURNING. I like to call this type of song the formula song. Glen uses it again and again and it always works. CALL FOR THE PRIEST continues the SIN AFTER SIN theme and comes off as sort of a spooky, one of a kind song that nobody else could concieve except early JP. Next, we have a trio of songs that seem to be connected. RAW DEAL is a sort of lounge act that sets up a mood for a half acoustic number, HERE COME THE TEARS/DISSIDENT AGGRESSOR. Here we see another formula in the essence of DREAMER DECEIVER/DECEIVER. Although Here Come the Tears is a strong track, the lyrics suffer a bit from the self pity theme. It does build up to a huge crecendo and explodes into DISSIDENT AGGRESSOR, which is truly a chaotic metal masterpiece. Ever notice the HERE COME THE TEARS REPRISE they throw in there? Nice touch. Sin After Sin seemed to be the 3rd of 4 doom and gloom themed albums. The old english logo was gone after this album too. It is interesting how ROCKA ROLLA had flashes of SAD WINGS, and SAD WINGS had flashes of SIN AFTER SIN, and SIN AFTER SIN had flashes of STAINED CLASS, which of course, the crowning acheivment of early Priest. After that they mellowed a bit and started the proverbial SELL OUT with HELL BENT. Lastly, I'd like to point out that this album was released during the midst of a punk rock explosion, so it didnt do very well. Columbia must of thought a lot of Priest to give them this much free reign in the studio, after all, this type of songwriting was DEAD in 1977. With STAINED CLASS, gone were the 7 to 9 minute 3 part epics, and in were the 3 to 4 minute speedy numbers. They also tried an image change, and got rid of those salvation army clothes that ULI ROTH laughs at. They would not be able to retain SIMON PHILLIPS, but finally got a more than adequate drummer in LES BINKS. Besides...an empty chair was better than Alan Moore....
Good but not great.......2001-07-07
They definitely changed their sound on this one. What happened to the guitar sound?Theres no edge to it.Very week sounding compared to the other 2.Seems like they went a little soft on some songs-Last Rose and Star Breaker.I like Here come the Tears.Very moody.Best tune is Dissident Agressor.Wow, this song kicks.Love the opening Halford delivers and the guitar rhythm is very metallic. Overall, a good album that lost some edge sound wise.Great album cover too.
