Customer Reviews:
Slow Grinding War Metal.......2004-06-21
Bolt Thrower play a very basic style of Death/Grind/War Metal. I really enjoy all their releases, but quickly get bored with them. The problem is, there is little variation between songs and albums. Once you hear one track, you have pretty much heard the album. Mercenary has the most variation in song structure of all Bolt Thrower releases. This makes it more entertaining over the course of the entire album. A brutal release by a very talented band and I think any fan of BT or Extreme Metal will enjoy Mercenary.
brutality with melody \m/.......2004-02-25
OMG, when u hear bolt thrower u have to headbang, there music is beautiful. and chaotic all in one and the pictures it portrays is BRUTAL !!!!!!!!! Pick up this album if u like death metal or even a bit of power metal, the riffs they write can relate to a pantera song called walk.
BORING AND REPETITIVE.......2003-06-10
This CD was disappointing since the previous drummer was replaced that might be why this album suffers from repetition. The only song that I really liked was (No Guts,No Glory)and the other songs didn't offer much and sounded all the same.
cool Grind/death/heavy metal.......2002-12-19
War is said to be the most cliche, used up, and tired subject in Heavy Metal. Bolt Thrower may have you forget that notion, especially after hearing such songs as "Zeroed," "Laid to Waste," and "No Guts, No Glory." Bolt Thrower mix in some great powerful melodies that don't take away from an image of battle portrayed in their music. The powerful double-base drumming is used perfectly, it is not something heard throughout the album non-stop, like such Grindcore bands as Mortician, Nasum, etc. This gives the music even more power. The lyrics are strong, meaningful, and not as violent as one would think. If you like their fellow "brit-core" scene members Benediction, I'm sure you'll enjoy this band and this album.
2nd only to BTs 4th Crusade.......2002-01-23
Nothing beats BTs "egyptian" guitar tuning. Try playing one of their riff's or solos on a keyboard and you'll hear what I mean. Powder Burns is my favorite. This album is well mixed and everything is very precise. Thank god Karl Willets came back to do the vocals as his vocal range is high enough not to compete with the guitars. The guitar solos are great in that the egyptian tuning gives it the etheric feeling of all the wars of all the ages past reaching out to assalt you in present time. Get 4th Crusade and this one!
