3 out of 5 stars Newie from Aussie grind stalwarts bodes well for future............2001-01-26

Fate hasn't exactly been kind to Aussie grind mongrels Damaged as the series of line up changes, internal conflicts, bust ups/reformations over the years will attest. For a while it seemed like the black cloud was destined to forever linger over the Damaged camp, that was until they acquired the services of grindcore cowbody Kevin Sharp. His recruitment drastically altered the band's predicament in a number of ways, mainly for rejuvenating the group's enthusiasm and for the myriad of possibilities that his involvement would yield on the overseas front. Perhaps luck is beginning to swing in their favour. This of course begs the question: Is 'Purified In Pain' the big triumph in the face of adversity suggested by the muscular new line up? Well yes and no. After a couple of spins the first two noticeable differences between the new DAMAGED and the group of yesteryear is the increased confidence and widening of sonic parameters. The band are still essentially a death/grindcore unit, yet many of the tracks display this aforementioned 'expansion' that ranges from the black metal influenced riffs in opening track 'Broken' to the hardcore-ish passages of 'Conman'. Broadening of influences aside, what really distinguishes this record from the pack are the contributions by Sharp and drummer Sanders respectively. Over the course of 13 tracks, Matt 'Skitz' Sanders lays down sheets of rapid-fire double kicks, arthritis inducing blast beats and gargantuan rolls with astonishing breakneck precision. Only a cursory listen is needed to understand why he is considered to be one of the finest metal drummers in Australia. Sharpie, on the other hand, offers up a punishing barrage of raw throated growls and snarls in a manner not unlike 'Sound....' while covering familiar thematic ground with rants about dodgy politicians, technology and inner dysfunction, all which have been his lyrical mainstay since B.T's inception. Unfortunately, despite the band member's efforts, 'Purified In Pain' is undermined by an _extremely_ weak production and frustratingly inconsistent song writing, two problems that have near stifled the impact of every one of their records to date. Not only does this prevent the band from coming anywhere near close to translating the awesome intensity of their live shows onto a digital format, it could also be rather off putting to potential converts who find the idea of lo-fi grind rather unappealing. As far as the songs go, for every genuinely effective number like 'Cyberwar', 'Breathe Deep' and the conspiratorial 'Head Trauma', there are a few half arsed 'tunes' that just sound like a collection of riffs that have yet to be organised into a cohesive whole. So yeah, ultimately 'P.I.P' is not greater than the sum of its exceedingly talent parts but it's worth picking up despite my reservations. Quality grindcore releases are scarce these days so junkies in need of a desperate fix are hereby ordered to secure themselves a copy immediately."

4 out of 5 stars Everything you'd expect..........2000-10-20

Wow. Thats all you can say when you hear Damaged. Pure, gaping jaw'd, WOW. This is quite possibly the most extreme music out there to date, and although their previous efforts (Token Remedies Research) seemed to be a bit more extreme and catchy, this cd still holds its own. The latest addition to the band is a new singer that focuses a little more on heavier, solid vocals, rather than just fast, indecipherable rants that seemed to be the dominating complaint about the first cd. The drumming is still the dominating powerhouse element that it was on the first cd, adding crazy, innovative rythyms to the slower, gut wrenching guitar riffs that became a trademark for Damaged in TRR. Purified in Pain will leave you extremely charged up and ready for action. Fast. Heavy. Extreme. Damaged.
