4 out of 5 stars Samson - 'Head On' (Sanctuary).......2006-09-17

I'm JUST recently discovering Samson.'Head On' was originally released in 1980,being the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal band's second record.Couldn't help but to notice the strong vocals through out the CD's ten well played and well produced cuts.Tunes here I was most impressed with were the lp's single "Hard Times","Take It Like A Man",the above and beyond the call of duty rocker "Hammerhead" and "Walking Out On You".Line-up:Bruce Dickenson-vocals,Paul Samson(R.I.P.)-guitar,Chris Aylmer-bass and Thundersticks-drums.Should appeal to fans of Judas Priest,Diamond Head,Saxon and Motorhead.Check it out.

3 out of 5 stars Another Must-have For Dickinson Fans.......2004-04-12

"Head On" is a great album. If you like music for the sake of liking music and early 80's british heavy metal is your thing, then buy this album. If you are a Maiden fan, buy it. If you think that Bruce Dickinson is the greatest singer in all the world (like I think he is), then buy this album.
Bruce seems to really shine on this record. Some of the stuff he does with his voice is ala Iron Maiden, however, it seems more chaotic and unabashed than Bruce's later recordings with Maiden. "Take me to your Leader" for instance has some really great singing and screaming in it. "Take it Like a Man" is a classic hard rocker, and "Walking out on You" is also another classic.
All in all, "Head On" is a decent offering for nwobhm fans.
As far as production and sound goes, yes, it could have been better, but Samson did what they could with what little money they had. Unfortunatly, Samson was a another band that also suffered numerous line-up changes and that can sometimes hurt a band or help them.
Samson is one of the many british bands that did not really ever hit. To me, music is'nt about what's popular, it's about what you like and what makes you feel good. Don't follow the trends, and be your own person when it comes to music. "Head On" [is really good]

5 out of 5 stars delicious_tunes.......2003-02-03

this and the two track video are cult. the best of the first three records. itýs sooo outrageous and ironic. itýs the missing link between blues and heavy metal. the clip to Vice Versa is so cool and shows bruce with great gesture, thunderhead freaking out. the bass is so groovy that keeps preasure on your stomache.the changes in tempo like in Hammerhaed, Vice Versa, Too close to rockýn roll & Manwatcher is the blueprint of any later thrash album. this is a milestone in case of weird images. they should have been earning the success of Kiss. because they had songs "&" lyrics. They were stars of the underground. 4 stars that made 5 for this amazing record.

2 out of 5 stars AWFUL PRODUCTION.......2001-09-26

I was chocked by the awful production in this album (compared to theirnext effort, SHOCK TACTICS). It seems to have benn recorded in a garage. It is also clear why Bruce Dickinson left the band. He was shoulders and head above the other musicians, in terms of musical skill. His voice shines like diamond, while Paul Samsonýs guitar work is weak; well intentioned, but really weak. Of all the SAMSOM albuns, the only worthwhile is SHOCK TACTICS, produced by Tony Platt.

4 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE WORST COVER ARTS EVER, BUT THE MUSIC..........2001-09-03

One of the worst cover arts ever, but the music here is first-rate British heavy metal from the eighties.
