Customer Reviews:
4.5 stars - Better the second time around.......2005-06-18
Out Of Exile (2005.) Audioslave's second album.
Early on in the twenty-first century, the rock and roll world got a shock. Rage Against The Machine vocalist Zach De La Rocha departed the band, leaving the three other band members behind. And who stepped in to fill his void - Soundgarden's Chris Cornell. The resulting new band became known as Audioslave, and the new quartet burst onto the music scene with their 2002 debut album. It was definitely one of the better albums from an era in which most rock and roll sucked. It's been three years, and the group no one thought would last has stayed together, and recorded a sophomore album! How does Out Of Exile, the song release from Audioslave, measure up? It is better or worse than its predecessor? Read on for my review.
To put it in the simplest terms possible, this album is an improvement over the group's debut album. And that's saying a lot, since the group's debut album was a damn good one. On this one the group diversifies their sound more than they did on the debut. While the debut was a damn good album, I won't deny that it could have used a little more musical diversity. And essentially, the band's sophomore effort takes everything the debut did right, and expands on it. Who would have thought the voice of Soundgarden teamed up with the instrumentation artists behind Rage Against The Machine would create what is arguably the finest rock and roll band of the twenty-first century thusfar? The album has no shortage of musical stylings, and everything the album does it does beautifully. Many songs have sounds reminiscent of the bands these artists once played in, many sound like something totally new. Where this album succeeds, it succeeds beautifully. I loved the first Audioslave release, but this one improves on the old one in pretty much every way. From hit singles like Be Yourself to the underrated album cuts that aren't likely to get a single release, everything on here is great. If you want to know how modern rock should sound, give Audioslave a listen.
Since this album's original release was fairly recent, it's still readily available in practically any store, including the ones whose CD selections are usually less than stellar. Practically any place that carries CDs is likely to have this album. There are imports, but they are too costly, making the domestic version ideal. Being this good, it's good to see it readily available in stores.
And there you have it. Audioslave has now shattered any doubts that they were a mere "flash in the pan" supergroup like so many that came before. In an age where many of the rock bands of the day suck, Audioslave is the light in a world of shadows. This, my friends, is the way modern rock is supposed to sound. I give this album a very high recommendation. Not many other modern-day rock bands have released an album that even comes close. Buy this one, and find out why Audioslave is the best new rock band to come along in a long time.
Warning: "Super Stupid" isn't a new studio version!.......2005-06-13
Some people might suggest that Audioslave's new album "Out of Exile" is a bit of a letdown compared to their harder-hitting debut, but I just look at it as a slightly different animal...not necessarily better, or worse...just a bit different...a new direction. True, they didn't seem to include quite as many "heavy" tunes this time around, but that doesn't make it any less worthy of a listen. If their self-titled album was described as being "3 parts Rage Against The Machine and 1 part Chris Cornell", I suppose "Out of Exile" might be better described as "3 Parts Chris Cornell and 1 part R.A.T.M."....but that is most definetly not a _bad_ thing. It's still Audioslave, and they still rock.
As for the Japanese Import album, the cd insert is a bit "misleading", to put it nicely. There are 2 bonus tracks listed: "Super Stupid", and "Like a Stone (Live)". Take note of how they specifically mention that "Like a Stone" is a Live track. What they fail to disclose is that the version of "Super Stupid" is also a live version (in fact, the same old previously released BBC Radio1 Session from the "Like a Stone" cd single).
So if you already own a cd-single with "Super Stupid" on it, there's really no need to spend three times as much money on this Japanese Import Album to get it. Buy the European Import version of "Out of Exile" for ~$10 less if you still want the live bonus track of "Like a Stone" (it's a nice acoustic version).
Not your typical audioslave..........2005-05-26
If your looking for more of the same from the first cd you will be sadly disappointed..this album is softer and the lyrical content written by cornell is shakey..how could his fellow band mates let him record such trivial lyrics like "dosen't remind me"...don't get me wrong i love audioslave and their first album is in my top three of all time but this cd lacks depth..there are some decent songs such as "the worm" but overall this album falls short of audioslaves potential..album three will be the true test...
