Customer Reviews:
The title says it all.......2005-07-14
This is the best studio compilation of MSG. Avoid all the other slapped together ones that usually cost more. This album covers his pre-hair metal days with Robin Mcaully (sp?). That is okay, as there were only 4 or 5 songs worth listening to from that period anyways. The only really solid MSG album after 1985 was 1995's "Written In The Sand". A MASTERPIECE.
Good compilation by a supergroup.......2004-04-06
I'll never forget when I bought a rare used CD at a local music store and my CD card was filled so I ended up getting myself another CD which was this one and I think that I made quite a good investment and I wasn't sure how good this band was although I was a fan of UFO and as it turns out, they're a good band but not quite as good as UFO.
Michael Schenker left UFO in late 1978 to rejoin his older brother's band Scorpions and recorded an album with them and surprisingly he auditioned for Ozzy Osbourne (who got booted out of Black Sabbath), Whitesnake and Aerosmith (it would be really interesting to see how well they could do with Aerosmith although it was their decline period) but he turned them down and formed his own band called The Michael Schenker Group.
My only gripe about this compilation is that it doesn't contain Victim of Illusion or Are You Ready to Rock and I didn't like the songs that featured Graham Bonnet (Rainbow/Alcatraz) for some reason although he was decent in Rainbow but if you're a casual fan of UFO or Scorpions, then you'll like this band and this CD is a great way to start off your Michael Schenker collection.
The Essential MSG.......2003-09-12
I bought this cd to replace an aging cassette. Make no mistake, this ROCKS! This is a prime example of timeless rock & roll.
Great Compilation (if you're into that sort of thing).......2003-03-22
Anything that presents Michael Schenker at his best deserves five stars. Any compilation, there are going to be disagreements about what gets included, but the song selection here is pretty intelligent. (Except- how could they include "Still Love that Little Devil"? I love Derek St. Holmes' voice, but that song doesn't even sound like it was written. It sounds like they were [playing] around in the studio with tape rolling.) However, I really can't recommend getting this as a substitute for having every one of the albums that these songs were drawn off of.
Itýs really Essential!!.......1999-10-06
This is one of the few "Best Of..." that really has the best from a performer. MIchael Schenker is well represented in this compilation, with all the classics on it, with all his various band formations. GOod.
