Customer Reviews:
Highly enjoyable power rock.......2006-09-02
This album, first of Dare's, is an odd combination of metal and power rock with synths, and Dare paid for this by being mostly ignored. I only bought it as a bargain on the strength of the rather stylish cover!
To make matters worse, after this very good first album they tried to make a second "guitar hero" plain rock album (Blood from Stone) and lost all the unique features they offered. By their own admission that was a mistake, and they've since returned somewhat to this style.
If you like big choruses, good keyboards in combination with solid guitar, and interesting serious lyrics, give this a try. I love it. Played it over and over, and haven't got sick of it.
Standout tracks:
Abandon, Into the Fire: two good rock songs with a great full sound
Under the Sun: bittersweet with a lot of feeling, starting and ending quietly and sadly. "Nothing lasts forever ... especially the things you always wanted to... Method to their madness, or so they say before they throw away the key..."
The Raindance: most synthy song with an almost dancey feel
King of Spades: a song with apparently a more personal touch from Darren.
All the musicians are what I would call solid: talented, consistent, professional, without being superstars and pushing themselves to the fore. This is a real band rather than a collection of musicians, and not afraid to have a full, rich, layered sound - no basic rhythm guitar+bass+drums here - thank goodness, there are now thousands of such bands, indistinguishable except by marketing.
ADDICTED TO MUSIC.......2005-08-19
This is simply the best mix of AOR and Hard Rock you will hear. Great album, great songs .
excellent.......2004-01-03
This is one of the best album to come out of the 80s.The hauntingly brilliant voice of Darren Wharton.( Thin Lizzy) is chilling to the bone. His tribute to Phil Lynott in The King of Spades is a song that i play over and over again,It is sung with such amazing feeling that it ALWAYS makes me cry. This is a MUST have for ANY metal fan that enjoys good honest fantastic music. Why Darren was ever in the background of Thin Lizzy was a crime. With talent like that he should have been up front. He pens such fantastic lyrics and then sings them so brilliantly he is truly a 5 star guy
