80's MOST underrated Metal Gods!!!!!.......2005-09-29
When I first heard this band, this LP could not be found, but in the Import section at the mall. Back when we were kids, we couldn't afford Import prices so the only copy my friends and I had was a cassette recorded from the vinyl. I had a copy that was used to make about 10 copies and the cassette that my version came from was probably a 5th generation in itself! Hey, that's the way it was as a teenager in the early 80's. Those of you from that era are probably laughing and nodding your head up and down...but it's the truth.
For those unaware of this band, the Rods ARE THE most underrated band to come from the 80's underground Metal movement. The Rods were only a three piece group but packed a punch that sounded like a 5 piece. For whatever reason, they just never could crack the mainstream metal market, although they easily could have done so. Although they fell at the final hurdle of stardom, they successfully built a very small yet strong cult following underground.
The album begins with Hurricane, one hell of an energetic track that sounds like a pissed off beehive that was pegged with a baseball bat in full swing. The next track Can't Get Enough Of The Fun reminds one of Def Leppard's early years, when they were actually hard and heavy. It would feel right at home on High n Dry. The same for Go For Broke. A catchy hook with a sing along anthem type chorus. Hot Love is a fast 80's type metal tune that would have been a perfect opener for the Rods in concert. This is the peak of the album in terms of high energy. Fast, double kick drums with a groove and plenty of guitar shredding that will make your ears bleed It reminds me a lot of Turn On The Action from Dokken's Tooth and Nail...only ten times more furious. Then the creme de la creme comes along in the form of Hot City. This could have been the biggest hit of the early 80's. Complete with palm muted riff and Arena chorus and ending with a shredd beyond shreds! These are just a few highlights from In The Raw, the rest of the album is just as good.
It's really hard for me to explain just how the Rods were. My recommendation...buy a copy of In The Raw and crank it up as loud as you can, put yourself in the early 80's and get ready for the roller coaster ride of a lifetime and you WILL feel it afterward.
Oh, and don't forget to wear a dangling cross from your ear, a spiked mullet would be sufficient and dig out those really tight jeans and cut up an old t-shirt to get in the spirit...just kidding....just buy it and crank it!!
The Rods - Straight Forward Metal At Its Best.......2002-09-09
This is one my favorite metal CD's of the eighties and my favorite by the band. The Rods combine good musicianship and songwriting, but without the glam. "Hurricane" is a great metal track and "Hold On for Your Life" also ends up on my Top 100 80's metal songs. The CD has great liner notes with band history, making of the album, etc. This was well worth the price. Please note that the bonus tracks are poorly recorded.
the rods are raw.......2001-02-10
date line 1983 the metal underground.hearing the the rods in the raw for the first time.my turn table on 24/7 playing the lp non-stop one of the best lps of all time in the metal world a must own for all metal heads young and old
Obscure 80's Metal at its Finest!.......2000-11-19
The Rods are a three-piece powerhouse reminicent of Triumph. A fat sound that can rival any five-piece band of the genre. The track titled HURRICANE will blow you away. IN THE RAW is an understatement - these tracks will leave you raw if you are a true heavy metal head banger from the 80's.
