4 out of 5 stars Mortification - rocking harder than previous 2 releases.......2007-03-11

I have been a big fan of Mortification since 1992. They have changed their sound throughout the years. I respect them for implementing different styles into their music. The older releases are very hard, which I enjoy very much. Their recent releases are a little mellower, yet still rock hard. Relentless is the Mortification release which sees Steve Rowe and company rock a little harder than their previous releases The Silver Cord is Severed and Hammer of God. I was excited at the prospect of Mortification having four members, that is until I found out that one of the guitarists (Jeff Lewis) was unable to continue to be part of the band. It's too bad because I believe he added some very good songwriting to complement Steve Rowe's writing. At any rate, this is a very good release by Steve Rowe and company. The musicianship is solid all around; Steve's thumping base playing always excellent, Adam's great drumming style adding to the music, solid rhythm guitar work from Mick, and better lead work from Jeff. This being his one and only album, his leads are an improvement over the last guitarist, Lincoln Bowen. I loved Lincoln, but Jeff just does a better job in my opinion. The music styles goes all over the place, from the slightly death metal-ish Apocalyptic Terror to the doom-sounding Sorrow. Here's a breakdown of each track:

1)Intro (3/10) - It's nothing special - just building momentum to the next track.

2)Web of Fire (9/10) - This song rocks! Great double beat drumming and a solid riff.

3)Heart Shape Void (8/10) - Just a solid track with a great message, good lead work.

4)Priests of the Underground (7/10) - It would be a better song if the verse section wasn't so repetitive with it's beat. Other parts are solid.

5)Bring release (8/10) - Good track; starts slow and speeds up in different parts. Good guitar work.

6)Syncretize (9/10) - A mid paced track with great lead work; well written an played.

7)The Other Side of the Coin (2/10) - Not a great track at all. The skip button is the best feature for this song.

8)Altar Song (5/10) - Not too memorable for me.

9)Sorrow (9/10) - Very cool song, kind of like a slow dirge. Good stuff.

10)3 of a Kind (6/10) - Ok song, good thumping bass track.

11)Arm the Annointed (7/10) - Good lyrics with solid music.

12)New York Skies (8/10) - Holds more meaning, having lived near NYC during 9/11 attacks.

13)Apocalyptic Terror (10/10) - This track is the hardest by far. More growling vocals on this one than others. Just a great heavy song, with great musicianship all around.

Mortification will always be one of my favorite bands - always changing it up. This album was a good precursor to the following albums as they starting veering to the heavier and faster songs. Really 3.5 stars for this album, but I round up to 4. Long live Mortification!!

5 out of 5 stars this band has satan's knees shaking.......2005-01-26

here is a good way to expel evil spirits from your living quarters. acquire this cd by mortification, play it, and instantly, the demons will flee, despite the fact that its death metal. mortification sounded a bit slow on one song "sorrow" and kicked rear end the rest of the time. when you open it up and look at the band members, they acquired a fourth player, but liner notes indicate that they will soldier on as a 3 piece. 3 piece band or not, they make satan's knees shake violently.

4 out of 5 stars Not As Good As Their Old Stuff........2004-06-15

When I first got this cd I was looking forward to hearing it even though I had heard that they had changed their style a bit. I am glad to say that most of it is pretty good but a few of the songs fall short and are pretty repetive or too long. I also miss the straight up death metal from their older cds too. Oh well, this cd is pretty good and fans of the band will probably like it if they keep an open mind or for fans of thrash metal as this is what they have become.

5 out of 5 stars great metal.......2004-02-26

Not too much to say here: this is an excellent metal album with a little death, thrash, blast beats thrown in to make it all interesting...and oh ya, there is a message about Christ! No matter how much a lot of folks despise Christains in the metal scene, everyone who enjoys metal should give this album a spin. Unlike a lot of metal bands who want the death of someone and spew non-stop hatred, these guys talk about God but do not suggest that everyone else sucks. If you do not beleive, fine, noone wishes you are dead, like let's say Deicide if you are a Christain. Oh well, how is it that people who do not believe hate what they say is not real..sort of funny, huh? One last thing, someone suggested that thius album can be for people who like P. O. D. or whatever, well maybe so, but Mortification is nothing like any nu metal, so please do not be afraid!

5 out of 5 stars nu-metal sucks!.......2003-11-02

Favorite Christian Metal:

1.Extol (they're simply the best!)

2.Tourniquet (Marty Friedman does all the guitars in their new album 'Where Moth And Rust Destroy')

3.Narnia (namely, 'Desert Lands' is their best)

4.Living Sacrifice ('Reborn' is a masterpiece, everything else sucks)

5.Zao (stay away from their new stuff)

I have 2 objections for the last review about Mortification sounding like Metalica. That review can be very unattractive to alot of young metal heads who beg originality. I will tell you why I disagree...

This conception is merely untrue, first of all, because Mortification is a death metal band that flerts with other sounds (like popular, but stupid american 'nu-metal'), but I dont believe that they've ever been a full blooded thrash metal band like Metalica. Secondly, all knowledgeable metal-fans know that Metalica got it's sound from Megadeth's Dave Mustane; that's right, They stoll Dave's lead guitar in 'Kill Em All' after they kicked him out of the band because of his drug problems, which was merely unmetal of them! So the originality of Metalica is rather miniscule, sence they get alot of their sounds from early bands like Slayer and Dave's Megadeth, plus Motorhead,...
