4 out of 5 stars Overlooked hard rock album.......2006-07-13

There are a lot of bands that were "overlooked" back in the late 80's and early 90's. When you really think about it, some of those bands deserved to be overlooked. There were a lot of hard rock bands from that era that just didn't stand out from the rest of the pack. Then there are bands like Babylon A.D., who despite having plenty of talent, never seemed to get the attention they deserved.

Released in 1989, the band's self-titled debut was a very solid hard rock/hair metal album. Babylon A.D. had a Warrant meets Tesla sound. It was melodic, but also bluesy with plenty of swagger. Jack Ponti (Surgin) wrote several songs for the album, which was a big help. His ballad "Desperate" is one of the best ballads of that era; though neither Babylon A.D. nor Baton Rouge could make a hit out of it. This is a great hard rock album, and it's a real shame that more people didn't hear it.

The track listing is as follows:

1. Bang Go the Bells
2. Hammer Swings Down
3. Caught Up in the Crossfire
4. Desperate
5. the Kid Goes Wild
6. Shot O' Love
7. Maryanne
8. Back in Babylon
9. Sweet Temptation
10. Sally Danced

4 out of 5 stars "Billy pulled up---to Big Jim's Liquor Store".......2006-02-16

I checked the ending credits of Robo Cop 2 to find out what the song playing during the scene at the video arcade was. It was "The Kid goes Wild", from A.D.'s first album. I bought it for that song but there are more. "Back in Babylon", is probably the best. "Desperate" and "Hammer Swings Down" are good rockers. This is some excellent hard rock with a somewhat religious tone. I could believe these guys went to the same church when they were kids. Some of the lyrics make me think of the church I attended as a kid. But don't get me wrong, this is definitely not gospel music. Sam Kinison talks in the song "The Kid Goes Wild". Or I should say screams.

5 out of 5 stars This rocks from START TO FINISH!.......2003-08-25

My God this is a killer album. Derek Davis shows off some killer vocals here. Although every song on this album is awesome, standout tracks are "Hammer Swings Down", "Crossfire", "The Kid Goes Wild", and "Maryanne". Is it possible to be into 80's metal and not like this? Probably not. Babylon A.D. were among many awesome 80's hair bands like XYZ, Killer Dwarfs, TNT, Bang Gang, Jillson, Shotgun Messiah, Britny Fox, and many others that just should have been far more popular. I've never heard Nothing Sacred but I'll review that album soon as I get a hold of it. If you like 80's glam, do yourself a favor and buy this!
