Customer Reviews:
blows.......2006-05-18
Where did Lynch go on this one? The two "enlighted" reviews I read on this were obviously written by guys that were smoking the same crack George was. Take the barbell off your head George...we always loved you're playing in all the groups you were in. Play again!
I AM SURE DON DOKKEN IS LAUGHING HIS A$$ OFF!!!!.......2006-01-13
I still can't believe how horrible this CD is. The one long review here had to be written by either a syncophant of George's or a relative. For God sakes, how can anyone find anything redeaming about this slop? Loved the first 2 Lynch Mob CD's and George Lynch solo. Love all he has done after he learned his lesson on this. You can "rap all ya want" about George and his great vision but you didn't see him do another like this now did ya?
I can't even find anything good to say about this other than I was glad I got some fool to BUY IT and there isn't enough space here or time on my part to list all the bad. Most notably, terrible songs, terrible rap singer from Compton or other highly African-American hang out, large absense of classic George Lynch guitar and solos, it just BLOWS DONKEY YOU KNOW WHAT!!! I am glad George stopped smoking whatever he was smoking when he made "Smoke This" and I am sure it makes Don Dokken laugh his ass off even today when he puts one of these songs on. Not to say Don hasn't hit some foul balls in the last decade of his own albums but Don's worst is at least listenable. This is just k-rap!! PASS AND SAVE THE DOUGH, ya ain't gonna get any classic George Lynch fix on this one people!
Lynch at his best.......2005-01-10
To all you George Lynch "fans" who criticized George for making this album: you ain't fans. True fans realize that a musician is at his best when he makes the music HE wants to make... ESPECIALLY when it involves growth and moving forward. George made it clear as day that this was the album he wanted to make, and he made it even clearer that he had no intent on making a rap-rock album until he saw that it was the best option for the music he'd already come up with. SO, for everyone who thinks George was just trying to be hip with the times by hiring a "rap" vocalist, you're wrong.
Now let's get to the album... when you combine the world's most exciting guitar player with the rawness that this new lineup brings George, you get something that is completely rare in today's world of hard rock: truly passionate music. Each song on "Smoke This" has more going on than most entire rock albums, and the layers and depth on these tracks make this an album whose excitement doesn't come close to fading after the first few listens... there are countless gifts waiting to be picked up after numerous listens, making this album continually fresh.
As far as the "rapper", Kirk Harper does a hell of a lot more than just rap on this album... "Hollow" should make every heavy metal freak happy with its screaming, "Relaxin' in the Land of AZ" contains singing that shows what Lionel Richie would sound like if he had talent, "What Do You Want"'s layered vocals include a better version of Scott Wieland's voice, and "World Spinning Away" has its Mike Patton moments. Yes, Kirk does a lot of rapping on this album, but its used in the right places; and let's not forget, the reason so many people hate rap is because it's usually not surrounded by good musicianship... well, this time the rapper has a world-class guitarist, a young prodigy on bass, and an inventive drummer who already has chemistry with his lead singer.
I highly recommend getting the original version of "Smoke This", as it contains both a memorable instrumental track and an extended guitar solo on "World Spinning Away" that successfully plays out an already almost-perfect song. Plus, the original release contains the natural order of the songs; on this newer version, the tracklist shows less balls, as George cowardly puts the album's true rap title-track at the end, and he inserts the albums heaviest songs at the beginning in a weak attempt to capture closed-minded listeners he might otherwise lose.
This album is the best example yet that George Lynch is not only a flawless guitarist, but a brilliant songwriter. Get this album to enjoy one of the world's only guitar wizards who puts as much effort into his song composition as he does his playing.
First impressions are not always true.......2003-11-21
C'mon gang! This release is not nearly are bad as most of the reviews would have you believe. Granted, I was shocked and dismayed when I first spun it up. It is definitely NOT Dokken or even earlier Lynch Mob. I am a major metalhead and do not like most rap-metal. I would rather have oral surgery than listen to Korn or Limp Bizkit. This disc, however, is very well prpoduced and the musicianship is superb. Sadly, there IS too much white-boy rapping, but there is also a lot of real singing. The songs are much more melodic than most rap-rock. And contrary to most of the other reviews, there is lots of great guitar work by George. All you need is an open mind. This disc gets much better with repeated listening. Give it a try.
Definately avoid this one, it's George at his worse........2003-08-15
I never thought that I could play a 13 Song Cd and only listen to one track with out skipping to the next one. Just can't believe, Mr. Scary would even want to play "White Rap with Metal mixed in and make his guitar playing nonexistent. Would much rather have listen to Mr. Scary, Anthony, Mick with either Oni or Robert singing. Just glad that Mr. Scary didn't do what Tommy Lee did and sit his guitar down to sing Rap. There is a happy ending to this sad CD. Mr. Scary is back checkout Lynch Pilson - Wicked Underground and the Lynch Mob-Revolution.
