Runner up, takes the silver.......2007-02-26
I ve written a review for THEM, now THE EYE is next as my personal pick at #2 in the King Diamond library. I am a Goth metal opera addict at heart, though this is more metal, the instruments flowing so fluidly with Diamonds voice as he tells this horribly wicked tale as a tribute to the atrocities of the Inquistions, (at least thats what I feel this CD is dedicated to...NEVER AGAIN! Blessed be!)seems to breathe on its own power to the ears of the listener. A dark orchestra weaving a Wagnarian opera spell to mesmerize and pull you in. You can almost feel the glowing pins and hear the murderous chants! King Diamond serves it up on a silver platter, go ahead take a piece, I dare you!
Make no mistake, this is ESSENTIAL King Diamond!!!!.......2006-08-24
You want to know what keeps "The Eye" from being mentioned in the same breath as Abigail, "Them" and Conspiracy? Two words: DRUM MACHINE. That's it. Yes, trust me, it bugs the hell out of me to but if you can get over it, you will discover one of King Diamond's most musically and thematically impressive releases to date. The theme of "The Eye" goes beyond just the meaning of some strange neckless, dealing primarily with the real life history of the French Inquisition and generally with church corruption, sexual abuse and rape of nuns. All of these things are dealt with in a classy and non-frivilous manner (this is no longer the KD of "Nuns Have No Fun" youth). My absolute favorite track is "The Trial" but ALL of the songs on this album are excellent, minus "Two Little Girls" (sorry, but to me, that song is the definition of filler-its not creepy, just annoying). Simply put, "The Eye" is a must have for both die-hard fans as well as anyone wanting to discover some good work by KD.
One Of His Best!.......2006-03-21
This story creeped me out and left me with chills. Very dark and forboding with a serious twist that'll make you smile. I recommend this for first time listeners of Kind Diamond as it is an easy way for those who don't know his work to see how well he takes you for a ride and then brings you back down. I got completely drawn into the story and was kind of upset that the album ended. I loved it that much!
The Last Great One.......2006-02-13
King Diamond's story telling was always top notch, and in "The Eye" he concludes an era of great albums, all released very closely together up to this point, and gives listeners what they want from the King: something more than just music to think about. "The Eye" has a classic KD feel from start to finish, and never lets up with its complexly emotional feel, painting the perfect picture to go with the story. This album will make you feel for the victimized characters, while making you loathe the victimizers, and all the while startling you with the mastery of musicianship and vocals displayed in the process. There are few better metal albums than "The Eye", and none better than the best albums by King Diamond. I suggest buying this album specifically, and all (previous) efforts by King Diamond and Co. Cheers.
the more things change, the more they stay the same.......2006-01-29
Once again we go to concept album-ville with King Diamond as our tour guide... This cd is way different than the previous concept albums as the "intro" song doesn't rear its head 'till track 4 ("Two Little Girls") instead of track 1... the other big difference is this is a couple of sub concept storys all linked together by the necklace in the album, as opposed to a single story line... makes for a more diverse album, different instrumentation such as harpsichords, excessive keyboards and a drum machine (shock - horror)... for some utterly insane reason King elected to use a drum machine instead of Snowy "Dream Evil" Shaw????... basically the theme throughout this cd is misuse of religious power... King brings the listeners into the storyline by giving clues to what will happen next but leaving it to the listener to figure out for himself ie: where the nuns hold the infant up to the cross, & the priests approach with hammer and nails, and by King advising us that there "is no more to tell" he makes it obvious what is about to happen next but leaves it to the listener to conclude, which is a great little psychological trick to have the listener feel more "involved" a stroke of genius that... Anyhow the scariest thing about this album is that the people, and the attrocities they performed are all proven historical facts... that makes this more scary than all the KD supernatural horror stories combined...anyhow this cd is a departure from previous releases due to the use of some different instrumentation, realistic instead of supernatural horror, and more lenient concept structure, yet it is still very much a KD recording, so the more things change, the more they stay the same...unfortunately misuse of religious power is rampant today (and not isolated to 1 particular denomination) and that is infinitely worse than the misuse of a drum machine
