Customer Reviews:
Good Time Rock From The Halen's........2007-03-08
This album rocks, and it is a classic.Takes me back to my high school years of the early 80's.
The tension album .......2007-02-11
The fights among the band are starting here and it shows, the music is very angry and Ed's playing is full of fire like the first album. Some of the best albums in history were made under tense conditions and this is one of those great albums that was worth the hell they went through to record it.
VAN HALEN RELEASES ANOTHER GREAT FAIR WARNING ALBUM!.......2007-01-07
I will be writing a review on the legendary brilliant masterpiece album simply entitled "FAIR WARNING" by one of Rock's most ALL-TIME greatest bands ever and one of America's favorite son's, I'm talking about the GREAT LEGENDARY V-A-N H-A-L-E-N! "FAIR WARNING" was originally released in 1981 on vinyl/LP and cassette on the Warner Brothers Records label in association with Van Halen Productions Inc. I purchased the very first release of this album on Compact Disc and the matrix or ID number is 3540-2. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary album, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the best informative and most accurate review possible.
WOW! What can I say about this legendary album and the great legendary band that recorded it all those years ago that hasn't already been said? Instead of writing and adding my own personal notes, I will quote word for word what is written on the inner sleeve album notes as follows: Released in the spring of 1981, "FAIR WARNING" was VAN HALEN'S fourth album and fourth consecutive million best seller. The album, produced by Ted Templeman, featured all original material by the band, including such in-concert favorite Rockers as "Mean Street," "So This Is Love," "Push Comes To Shove" and "Unchained."
Originally trained as concert pianists, the Netherlands-born Van Halen brothers, Alex and Eddie, relocated to Los Angeles with their family in the late 60's. Eddie learned to play drums and Alex picked up the guitar, but by the time they formed their first group, Mammoth, they had switched rolls in instruments. With the addition of bassist Michael Anthony, recruited from a rival band, and Midwestern-bred vocalist David Lee Roth, the line-up was complete and VAN HALEN was born. From 1974 to 1976 the group established itself as a favorite on the L.A. club scene. It was there that they were spotted and discovered by KISS' bassist Gene Simmons, who also financed a demo tape. In 1977, the band was signed to Warner Brothers Records.
What followed was an uninterrupted run of Platinum albums and sold-out stadium dates. VAN HALEN'S self-titled debut featured two hits, the KINKS classic "You Really Got Me" and "Runnin' With The Devil." 1979's "VAN HALEN II" and 1980's "WOMEN AND CHILDREN FIRST" were both Top 10, multi-million best sellers.
The Rockin' music of "FAIR WARNING" highlighted a less structured, more open approach, well suited to the band's incendiary stage show. Following the release of "FAIR WARNING," the band embarked on a barnstorming 10-month world tour.
I would like to quote one of my most favorite lyrics from the song "Mean Street" contained on this album. It quotes: "...AND SOMEONE SAID FAIR WARNING! LORD WILL STRIKE THAT POOR BOY DOWN! TURNED FROM HUNTED INTO HUNTER, WENT TO HUNT SOMEBODY DOWN!..."
As you can see, this is definitely one great legendary album worth purchasing that he or she should definitely own as a valuable and important part of his or her own personal music collection. This legendary album will also prove to persevere and endure the test of time and will get better with age like wine. This legendary priceless gem will always be around to be enjoyed and cherished for many more years to come, NOW AND FOREVER!
In closing, As we all fully well know, the VAN HALEN legend does not even come close to ending here either! If anything, IT IS STILL ONLY THE BEGINNING! VAN HALEN would continue to record and release many more great albums that were still yet to come and be in store for all of us. There would also prove to be more continuing tales and stories in the VAN HALEN legend that would still need to be conquered and written in many chapters. But that, my fellow readers and reviewers, is something that you will have to stay tuned and read further on at a later date. Here's to you David Lee, Eddie, Alex and Michael. Keep Persevering! Keep The Faith! And as the saying goes folks, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY," am I wrong or need I say more? Enough said. Thanks for reading my review and I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also hope that you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. VAN HALEN RULES! Long live Rock n' Roll! Rock out always and take it easy. Forever in Rock n' Roll, J.L.
guitar whiz-kid could have used songwriter.......2006-08-28
Eddie VH changed the way the electric guitar was and is played. The weak link is the songwriting. While better than the material on other VH albums ("beautiful girls"!? "dance the night away"!?), Fair Warning still suffers from this flaw.
Van Halen's finest hour!.......2006-08-08
After Women and Children first, Van Halen knew they had to make a definite music decision: return back to the upbeat pop-influenced sound of their first two albums, or continue the less structed, more open approach of Women and Children First? The latter path was the eventual conclusion after Eddie voiced dissatisfaction at being held back on musical direction. The result was a more rockish album, the lyrics dealt with matters similar to the first three but did so in a format that fit more with the band's live show and not their pop sensibilities.
The list:
1.Mean Street (4:55): The meanest EVH guitar opener with the pulling handtapping technique that produces a very unique sound effect (he fingertaps and whilst moving his hand up and down the fretboard). Shortly after follows one of Van Halen's darkest riffs followed by a funk element? One of the harder staples in the VH catalogue.
2."Dirty Movies" (4:08): Obvious synth work from Eddie throughout, a very dark sound scape is present although the subject manner is very light (its about a girl who becomes a porn star after high school and the effect it has on her hometown).
3.Sinner's Swing! (3:08): An exclamatory song! The only time you hear the words "Sinners Swing!" is at the very beginning of the song. Warning: Dave drops the f-bomb on the virst virse, which is friggn unnecessary on a Van Halen recrod. Otherwise the song is great: I think it is about a guy trying to get with some chick and she keeps brushing him off and about how if you want someone keep trying, no matter what.
4.Hear About it Later (4:33): Van Halen's darkest song is about not worrying about the future, for it takes care of itself; that is what I gather from the lyrics, which jump from one event to another. One of Eddie's most creative guitar solos takes mainstage.
5.Unchained (3:27): Kind of has the same sound as "Mean Street" and "Sinners Swing!" but more commercialized. One of Dave's most creative one-liners is present: " Woo-hoo! Take a look at this!
Hey man, that suit is you!
Whoo-whee! You'll get some leg tonight for sure!
Tell us how you do! Hoo hoo hoo!
(Come on Dave, gimme a break)
Hey hey hey hey! One break, comin' up!" Very original. The song is about life being Unchained, nothing stays the same (dur!).
6.Push Comes to Shove (3:48): Oh wait! There is a pop-influenced song on this album. There is an omnipresent bass line throughout with a little guitar whine here and there. A big break from the first 5 rockers on here.
7.So This is Love? (3:05): A classic example of how combining different music styles into one can create a superior sound. Starts of with a light intro that is easy listening into a guitar driven conclusion.
8.Sunday Afternoon in the Park (2:00): A keyboard instrumental that is pretty heavy. Van Halen is one band that is noted for turning a keyboard into a metal weapon, and still make it sound good. This track has to be one of the heaviest instrumentals that use only a keyboard.
9.One Foot Out the Door (1:56): A very short song that is about Dave having to bolt out of some ladies house after her husband shows up out of nowhere and the escape. Could be considered Van Halen's "Paranoid" due to the short song length (how many songs do you know are in the 1:00-2:00 range and have actual lyrics and song structure?) and the intense furiosity of the band. Maybe Van Halen's most intense song ever.
The greatest Van Halen album ever:
