Customer Reviews:
Extremely good.......2007-01-15
Many of the songs on this album are awesome. God of Impiety typically gets good reviews from people I know who heard this album. I gave it less than 5 stars because the first and last songs are less than stellar.
Passionately hateful escapism.......2006-05-30
Most of my thoughts about this album have already been stated by previous reviewers, so I'll just post some assorted thoughts.
- People love to compare Old Man's Child to Dimmu Borgir, simply because they are both mid-paced black metal bands with keyboards. This is a flawed comparison; Dimmu Borgir is a band with several members and an entire orchestra under their belt, yet they are unable to compose a song without the inclusion of trailing, irrelevant lines of fluffy symphonics. Old Man's Child just has one songwriter, but the lucid keyboards actually complement and enhance the music's majesty instead of either becoming a droning backdrop or its own musical entity entirely. Galder has the finesse to find a happy medium.
- Galder's chilling, multi-dimensional vocals are totally improvised. I don't care what anyone says, that's talent.
- Skinpounder Gene Hoglan from Death and Strapping Young Lad appears on this album. That alone warrants a listen.
- This band comes dangerously close to the commercial side of the black metal spectrum for my tastes, but stands above overrated goth metal like Dimmu and CoF by applying both excellent songwriting and captivating atmosphere. Tranquil and harmonic interludes work to accentuate the ominous tones of misanthropy painted by more sinister passages, and provide tonal variance. This would be the perfect soundtrack to some vast, medieval war.
- Awesome title, by the way. I'd never expect a spiritual invasion to be ill-natured.
- Thus says the Pellington
very underated.......2006-04-04
Old mans child may not be as great as Emporer or Dimmu Borgir but they're definantly one of the better black metal bands out there. I first got this cd after I discovered Dimmu Borgir. I liked it but was to taken by Dimmu at the time to really give OMC a chance. After having almost all of OMCs cds I think that ill natured and Revalations 666 are the top two cds. All of them are really good with no bad songs but this is the one I come back to the most often. Normally however I like longer songs, but OMC tends to have shorter songs than most Black metal cds. That doesnt mean it lack anything it still is epic sounding music.
Towards Eternity 9 Opening keyboard reminds me of a dark carnival of freaks. Than out of nowhere guitars and drums blast in. The rest of the song is an awsome example of what symphonic black metal can be. Awsome guitar harmonies, brain bashing drums and enough keyboards to demonstrate the beauty of darkness.
The Dream Ghost 8 Sounds like a Dimmu song but with Galder on voacals. Memorable riffs with some good keyboards. Not my favorite but still pretty darn good.
Demoniacal Possession 9 This song is actually pretty catchy but not in a bad way. You can almost scream along with this song.
I really like the guitar in this song. It will get stuck in your head long after you listen to it.
Fall Of Man-9.5 Once again if you like Dimmu you will love this song. At 2:20 my favorite keyboard part comes on. than the riffs join back in. Sounds like the epic soundtrack of a viking massacre.
Captives Of Humanity 8.9 Very keyboard heavy song. Reminds me of the Lord of the Rings. The guitars are very melodic for most of the song, but still with enough violence to scare the crap out of normal people.
God Of Impiety 10 Starts off with a screaching guitar that creeps up on you and than it explodes into a crescendo of guitar harmonies. Not as much keyboards in this one. This is my favorite on the cd. Has some headbanging moments but is mostly just melodic guitar.
My Evil Revelations 8 Mostly hard guitars and drums. There is some etherial choir-like keyboards around 2 minutes in the song as well as some good piano but it is mostly a hard song.
Thy Servant-9.1 This one opens with the most evil riff of the cd. About halfway through there is a nice solo. Very memorable guitars on this song.
Overall this is a must have cd in your collection if you like Symphonic Blackmetal or viking metal. OMC deserve to be considered more than just a side project. They are great.
My favorite old man's child.......2004-07-08
Something about this cd just makes it better than the others. It's pretty fast for them. The riffs are very crisp and clear and sometimes they can be pretty groovy for a black metal band. Track 2 has a good grove to the main riff. I think galder's vocals are the best here. They sound truly messed up, out of this world. The keyboards are very good, i think their best keyboards. They are not over done. The drummming is very precise and well kept with the rest of the band.
The songs are pretty diverse for this type of music, if the vocals are not. Sometimes the songs rely on a good guitar riff to drive it. Other times, it's the keyboards that carry things around. they usually do this switch up in the songs themselves so each song is individually interesting.
a LOT of black metal type bands make the songs long and try to be epic but OMC keep the songs rather short (all of them are under 6 minutes) so the songs breeze by, not bogging you down with unesscary time changes, epic keyboard passages, and poinltess souring guitar solos.
If your a fan of black metal, i suggest this cd.
Is There Anything Better??????.......2004-04-24
Words cannot describe this album. Powerful, talented, lurid, evil, underated and just plain outstanding! This is the best Gothic/Black metal band in the world. The only other band that comes close is "Cradle of Filth". There is a big toss up on those two bands.
Old Man's Child's music is so catchy that I can listen to the music over and over and over and never get sick of it. When I first bought this album I listened to it four times in a row and still wanted to listen to it. The music makes you feel as if you are being pulled in a fantasy world and you are thrown back in time or a different dimension.
All in all I cannot get enough of this band. All there albums are excellent as well as this one. And on this album there are only two people doing everything. Wow! Now that's a true musical genius!
