Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Sometimes wishes do come true........2006-11-03

The CD is enjoyable, not great as a "Best Of" should be. I will have to be honest in saying that this is my first CD from Nightwish and based on what other people have said (best of their songs, etc), it may be the last. Don't get me wrong, I can play this over and over, but if these are the best, they do not bode well for me buying more.

5 out of 5 stars Bravo........2006-07-24

I love all of the tracks on this album, though it is missing a few songs. But that`s alright, of course. Not everyone likes the same songs. For those who are new to Nightwish, this is a great way to start off. Before this came out, I usually reccomended Once, their most latest album. But now there`s an album that has Nightwish from the full nine years. This is great.

5 out of 5 stars De poca Madre.......2006-05-26

Este cd incluye, todas mis canciones favoritas, por eso lo recominendo ampliamente, pero el nombre correcto de la cancion: Sacament of Wilderness es Sacrament of Wilderness, please correct name of song:Sacament of Wilderness is Sacrament of Wilderness

3 out of 5 stars This has been done before, and better.......2006-05-05

As a long time fan of Nightwish, I am more than a little upset that they felt the need to put out a brand new 'Greatest Hits' album with Bestwishes only a few years old and only ONE full length album separating the two.

Both albums have in common: Ever Dream, Kinslayer, Over the Hills and Far Away, Walking in the Air, Wishmaster, Bless the Child, Stargazers, Sleeping Sun, and Sacrament of Wilderness. It's hard to argue against any of those, and these songs make Highest Hopes still worth the purchase if you are new to Nightwish.

Bestwishes has that Highest Hopes does NOT: End of All Hope, She is My Sin, Come Cover Me, Riddler, Beauty and the Beast, Know Why the Nightingale Sings, Sleepwalker, Crownless.

Highest Hopes has that Bestwishes does NOT: I Wish I Had an Angel, Elvenpath, Dead to the World, Nemo, Deep Silent Complete, Dead Boy's Poem, Highest Hopes.

Hmmm, let's compare. End of All Hope, a song almost as good as Wishmaster, everybody's favorite Nightwish song, is left off and replaced by Dead to the World, a good song but with more annoying guest male vocals and none of the awesome power of End of All Hope. No more Riddler, easily one of the best songs off of Oceanborn, itself their best full lenght. No more She Is My Sin, similarily awesome song from Wishmaster (the album). The inclusion of Dead Boy's Poem is commendable, but as far as epic pieces go, i would have preferred to see Fantasimic or Beauty OF the Beast. Elvenpath replaces Nightingale as the sole track from Angels Fall First. This is acceptable.

The two songs from Once are NOT acceptable. First off, why make a brand new compilation CD for the sole purpose of including a new album, and ONLY INCLUDE TWO SONGS FROM THAT ALBUM!! And if you only include two songs, at least make them GOOD songs.. in my estimation at least, Nemo and I wish I had an Angel are two of the weakest offerings from the already weak Once. They would have done MUCH better with Dark Chest of Wonders and Ghost Love Score, or even Siren.

Finally, they still haven't realised that Phantom and the Opera deserves an inclusion on Nightwish's best ever, though if you read my review of Bestwishes, you'll see they 'listened to me' on at least three counts by dropping Crownless and Beauty AND the Beast, as well as including Dead Boy's Poem. One of the few things they got right with this release.

The only justification I can see for releasing an album so soon after and inferior to a previous 'Best of' compilation is the absurd price tag on Bestwishes. This release does make some of the best songs they've ever done more accessible, and I would have given a much higher rating if it were not for the poor selections from Once and the existence of Bestwishes. In the end though, this CD is just a cheap imitation.

4 out of 5 stars An Excellent starting point!.......2006-03-07

If you've never experienced this bands music, this is were you should start. All the songs are very good and showcase what this band is all about. I could do however without the Pink Floyd cover at the end on the cd, but overall it's a good listen. The texture and power of their music is excellent as it flows with ease. They are a heavy rock/metal band make no mistake about that, however they are very melodic in how they approach this task. If you like chick singers belting it out, keyboard style nuances/textures, power cords through Boogie stacks, bass and drums holding in all down/together and driving it forward, than this is a must listen. The first disc is strictly music and good music, mostly their hits so to speak. The second disc is live coverage and is a nice bonus. The liner notes are ample and include the lyrics. Overall a good beginners set or a set for someone trying to thin the cd heard a little. Like most Greatest Hits packages, some stuff is missing, however overall it's a pretty decent package.
