Exposing a toilet.......2006-10-03

Hello, first off let me state that I am neither Issobel stevens nor STEVENSPW or whatever the name on this 'review' has been posted as I am in fact Gregit Gutterheid S-Lungs. Right, I have never heard this CD but I know that I will. The reason I am writing this review type thing is to voice my believe about the reviewer at the end of this list or perhapsat the one before last. Anyway my belief is this: that, that little **** (insert approately hideous expletive) second from the last or last (you'll soon figure out who, even if I have gotten the placing wrong, which I may have) knows fine well about Mayhem's bloody history but is just speaking (typing) as though he dosen't to further incense those he hates or just conciders pathetic. Well that is my 2 cents worth (equivelent to around one pence ion Scotland (where I hail you from)) so I hope you'll join me in hoping that that fellow DOSEN'T suffer a particularly agonising form of cancer and that his entire family dosen't disown him. Any hoo byee (I'm going to the doctors now).

I thought this album was sung by Dead aka Per Yngve Ohlin but some guy said it was Maniac but Maniac had left by now right? It's Dead singing right? this is an awesome album no matter who is singing but...i need to know.

An ugly and distorted mess. But it works........2006-03-25

What on earth do we have here? This is some of the earliest black metal committed to tape. In 1987, there was almost nothing like this. Extreme music at that time was bands like Possessed, Death, Bathory, Sodom, and Kreator. And here we had this Norwegian metal band called Mayhem. I am sure that the ones who were fortunate enough to hear this in '87 probably thought "What the f*ck did I just listen to?" This was far beyond evil and insane, this was something from another world.

Silvester Anfang is a short drum intro. It has a sort of military sound. Kind of creepy. Then comes the song Deathcrush. Starts off with Euronymous playing an evil and distorted riff and then Maniac starts his screaming. And let me tell you that this guy is called Maniac for a reason. The way this guy shrieks is just out of this world. It's tough to believe that this guy is actually saying words, it just sounds like insane screams. Manheim drums pretty fast when the song picks up speed. The cover of Venom's Witching Hour is simply evil, it really is. Imagine the intensity of the original and multiply it by about 100 and you have Mayhem's version. Maniac's shrieks at the end are truly unsettling. Necrolust starts with a slow pace and a truly evil guitar sound. And then the song picks up and the song becomes very frantic and scary. "Neeeecrolust!!!" Ha ha, scary indeed!

Chainsaw Gutsf*ck is a killer black metal tune. That opening riff by Euronymous is very dark and when Maniac opens his mouth, it really is eerie. This guy's voice gives me chills whenever I hear it! Then towards the end, the song picks up speed for a few seconds. Just check out that drum pounding! Sounds like a machine gun. Weird Manheim is down right blood curdling, and all it is is a keyboard playing! (sounds like a keyboard, anyway) Very haunting sound it gives off, and very sad as well. But it soon gives way to psycho drumming by Manheim and the song Pure F*cking Armageddon begins. More killer riffs, as well as one of Manheim's best performances on the album. Pretty fast drumming in some parts! It all comes to an unsettling close with the words "PURE....F*CKING.....ARMAGEDDON...." being growled. Wow.

So what exactly is this album? Well it was way ahead of its time, I can tell you that! These songs are brutal and dark, and not for a casual metal fan. Imagine the evil of Bathory's debut, the relentlessness of Seven Churches, the atmosphere of In the Sign of Evil, the crushing heaviness of Pleasure to Kill and the sheer brutality of Scream Bloody Gore all thrown into some sort of frenetic mess and you have Deathcrush. Oh and the lyrics are quite disturbing I warn you (just look at the song titles!) but then again, you wouldn't expect anything else from these guys. If you are ready for some raw evil, then take a deep breath and delve into this album. But don't say I didn't warn you.....

Simple yet brutal........2005-09-18

When one think's of Mayhem, bleak black metal and a "satanic" image are surely the first thing to come in one's mind. This is it, early Mayhem, simple and brutal. First i'd like to adress some topics other than Deathcrush. Many have stated "This is underground for one reason, cause they suck!" Shall we think about this for one moment? Good Charlottle, Green day and that awful emo music is mainstream and everybody knows of it. Does that make it good!? NO. When looking at it as such, why should being underground make Mayhem suck? Also, is this album complicated full of intricate guitar work? No. Did they get better with their insturments as years went on? Yes. Murder, suicide, church burning and line-up changes have followed Mayhem like the plague. In the end though, under the corpse paint, behind the gimmick, lies one thing. The music, which in the end truly speaks for its self. The first track "Sylvester Anfang" is pretty much a drum intro that reminds me alot of "Grand Declaration of War" (even though at the time it would not be released for 13 years) Next up, is the title track. Which is dark grimy and bm in glory. However, complicated it is not. I learned the guitar in about 10 minutes top. One of the best song's here. Next up, is the classic song "Chainsaw Gutsf*ck" lyrical poetry it is not, infact the lyrics are pretty lame here. The song however, which is probably the slowest here, is quite dark. Probably my favorite song here. A cover of Venom's "Witching Hour" is up next, sure it is worth a listen but I really do not enjoy Mayhem covering song's. Necrolust follows, you can probably take a guess of the lyrical content by the song name. One of the faster song's here, begins with a dark single guitar riff. Most of the solo's here just seem to be frantically played but are pulled off pretty well. (Weird) Manheim follows, definetly a weird track as the title says. Has a good bass intro. The final track, Pure F*cking Armageddon has the same intro as the song before it. The song is just as the title says. A fast paced closing song that take's no prisoners. Sums up the album pretty well.

So, if you're curious about Mayhem, this isn't the place to start. However, if you love black metal this is MANDATORY listening. Black Metal's roots are here. However, if you hate it and are looking for atleast one bm band/album to get into, this won't be it. Infact it will probably make you hate it more. Either way, enjoy.

the previous reviewer needs to do some research because a member of this band killed himself, another member murdered a bandmate and burned down some churches. members of the band also ate a bandmates (the suicide) brain. these guys arent all talk. ecxellent and very creepy album. raw. true black-metal is the new punk.
