4 out of 5 stars Back to the Future .... for a low four stars.......2006-06-29

The Time of the Oath is one of those lost mid 90's Helloween albums where the band were chronically unfashionable and retreating musically. This was due to the dwindling of their original fanbase which left in droves after not really appreciating the bands attemps to move in new directions with the album Chameleon and also by the fact that the US market had not picked up on the band at all, meaning their albums were starting to appear only as imports. All of which meant that it made good sense to retreat back to the sort of high speed heroic metal of their earlier years.

And here it is, an album full of semi gothic touches like discussion of the various prophecies of Nostradamus and indeed, suitably gothic cover art as well. Luckily for Helloween the line up for this album of Grapow + Weikath (G's), Uli Kusch (D) and lead throat Andre Deris were eminently suitable to pulling off a total headbang here.

The album kicks off with two of the greatest stompers in the Helloween canon with We Burn and Steel Tormenter which are two tunes guaranteed to add some speed to your car as your foot inexorably pushed down harder and harder on the accelerator as you barrel down the highway. Andre Deris has put his stamp all over this album by penning a bunch of the tunes and once again Weikath is happy to have his bandmates shoulder much of the songwriting. He may be in charge, but he knows when one of his guys have written a top notch rockers. The variety of Chameleon is of course a distant memory, but the album does have enough variance between it's fast paced burners and it's mid paced cruisers such as Before the War and A Million to One.

The humour makes an appearance with Anything My Mama Don't Like while the tunes Mission Motherland shows what everyone already knew - that sometimes Helloween do truly suck.

Not a massively awesome release but certainly a solid team effort by all concerned to produce an album with hooks and heft and the band have again worked with long time producer Tommy Hansen who knows how to handle their sound and cram it onto disc in a crisp and clear manner. A worthy purchase for fans of the band and also for those wanting to know where later bands such as Primal Fear scored some of their moves from.

5 out of 5 stars Hard paced pure metal.......2005-09-20

I bought keeper of the seven keys II a couple of a years ago after seeing what affiliation Helloween had with bands like Iron Maiden, i am was immediatly stuck with them. But when i saw that the singers switch so many times i was unsure about the other albums becuase i like the guys voice so much. I previewed the songs from the album i realized how naive i was, not only is the singers voice not that much different from Keeper of the Seven keys II(they both have very high toned singing voices), but the music is faster and more intense than ever. The lyrics are again questionable, but that is not the point as this album rocks. The first 6 songs are perfect with a mix of double kicks, epic guitar solos and catchy chorus'. After that however they start to trail downhill as they get slower and wierder. Those songs do not not bring the album a lot however, and some of them are still somewhat strong like their earlier counterparts(The Time Of The Oath).
We Burn, Steel Tormentor, Wake Up The Mountain and Power are almost better than keeper of the seven key II, almost.
Definitly worth buying.

5 out of 5 stars It's the time of the oath!.......2005-08-01

Running solidly in the Keeper tradition, Time of the Oath is a great metal offering from the godfathers of power metal! From the blazing opener We Burn, to the haunting outro and title track Time of the Oath, this album does not disappoint. Some listeners might be turned off by the ballady Forever and One or If I Knew, or the weird Anything My Mamma Don't Like, but these fillers are backed by tracks like the pounding Steel Tormentor, the lively Before the War, the epic Mission Motherland, and the galloping Kings Will Be Kings. Time of the Oath is very dark, heavy, and fast but also shows restraint and poise in is orchestration. This is definitely a Keeper and worth every penny.

5 out of 5 stars Power!!!.......2004-12-30

After Making the very popular Master of the Rings -album, Andi Deris and the band made this album which was quite sad, rebellious, and heavy. The album has some great ballads "Forever And One" and "If I Knew" which both are very sad...both are kind of love songs. There's great upbeat tracks too "Steel Tormentor", "We Burn", "Before the War", "Kings Will be Kings", and "Wake Up the Mountain"...none of them isn't so happy. There's also a sad heavy track "The Time of the Oath" is a tale about Satan taking the control over you. "Mission Motherland" is a long one and is like the most of the songs in "Master of the Rings". "Power" was the first single from this. It is also the most popular song in this album. It is fast and it has great lyrics.
Stars: Forever And One (Neverland), Before the War, Power, The Time of the Oath, We Burn

5 out of 5 stars Solid Effort........2004-08-31

Sounds like classic Helloween. Vocals are right on. The bass work is sick and perfectly placed in the mix. Added to the traditional Helloween sound are at times elements of funk and progressive rock.

The album has a nice pace and plenty of diversity. My favorites are the opening thrasher We Burn and the epic, but quirky Mission Motherland.

In general I haven't enjoyed most of Helloween's work since Keeper Pt. 1 & 2. The Time of the Oath is a pleasant surprise.
