Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Vintage Wine Is The Best Wine.......2006-11-17

Following the hugely popular success of "Stand Back", April Wine had a long row to hoe coming up with an album that could even come close to its predecessor. I read one (American) reviewer say that he did not consider any song on the album "a hit". Maybe we're more tolerant in Canada or something, because this was the first Canadian album ever to achieve platinum advance orders, thanks to the ridiculous success of "Stand Back"

One of the best virtues of April Wine is their ability to very cannily adapt their music and styles to the changing times. Guided by songwriter extraordinaire and musical virtuoso Myles Goodwyn, this is an album that shows the band in a state of change. While it may not have sold as well as "Stand Back", it's the album that secured the band a US record deal with London records. The title track and "Like a Lover, Like a Song" were top ten on Canadian radio, and the latter remains an April Wine standard to this day. On the downside, the production is quite dated, especially by today's standards. Additionally, the songwriting is a bit one-sided and lacks some of the raw, edgier feel of the previous two albums. This makes sense, seeing as how this is the first album created following the breakdown of the Clench/Goodwyn songwriting partnership. On that note, this is also the first album featuring Steve Lang on bass guitar.

4 out of 5 stars A long lost classic.......2005-06-01

This album, though released several years before April Wine's biggest commercial sellers, is still, after all this time, a true pleasure to listen to. In its' original album form, it was pretty close to flawless... all 10 tracks are strong. It was indeed a travesty for Aquarius to cut out 2 of the best songs and rearrange the rest, otherwise I might even give a rare 5 star review to this. I don't understand the reasoning behind this... I guess to sell the other cd that those songs are on. How anyone could give this one star however, is beyond me.

1 out of 5 stars frank marino on one tune-the rest stinks........2005-01-27

for those robin trower/jimi hendrix/randy hanson fans, "so bad" features none other than fellow candian franke marino(as he spelled it back then). it rocks, it's awsome, its like a cut lifted fm a mahagony rush album. i'd probably pay the 25.00 just to hear that song again. wicked!

1 out of 5 stars Who's going crazy here? not me, pal..........2005-01-13

Really - nothing to be excited about. Not one song here rises to the status of a hit in my book. "Rock-n-Roll Woman" and "Like a Lover Like a Song" are just a tad above the rest of the album but that's not saying much. Not worth its price even at a discount store.

5 out of 5 stars Shotdown.......2002-12-06

I am a great fan of April Wine for 20 years. There was the other version of this album on LP, which contains beautiful ballads "Marjorie" and "Child's Garden" which also appear on their album "Forever For Now", and that version was perfect and my favorite April Wine album. Still, this version is excellent and contain string of great tunes. It is a wonder to me why any of April Wine compilations do not contain the classic "Shotdown". This is one of my most favorite AW song!
