4 out of 5 stars Some quality stuff here..........2006-09-26

Is it the best Thin Lizzy release? No
Am I glad I purchased this? Yes
Does it have some quality Lizzy stuff Yes!
I'd much rather have given this release 3.5 stars.
Big complaint- The sound quality on the Wounded bird reissue really drags this disc down.
The rundown- Okay, there is some generic "metal" stuff that goes on here.
At times the band is trying to mine territory done a tad better by Judas Priest or other 80's hard rock/heavy metal bands.
Took me awhile to warm up to this disc.
I'm probably in the minority here, but I enjoyed 1980's "Chinatown" and 1981's "Renegade" albums a bit more than this one.
That said we have some great tracks here.
"Thunder and Lightning", "This is the one", and "Bad Habits" will get you going. "The Sun goes down" slows things down but is a great smoldering track.
This was the last Lizzy disc I purchased to round out my collection.
This disc also took me the longest to digest and get into.

5 out of 5 stars Thin Lizzy's Swan Song.......2006-04-03

Thunder & Lightning. (1983)

**** 1/2.

I must be fortunate. I own the Vertigo Records CD issue of this album. I had to special order it in 1991 to the tune of about 25 bucks. From some of the previous reviews it appears Wounded Bird Records has not done a quality job on the reissue.

The addition of John Sykes (guitar) did wonders for this LP. It infused additional songwriting skills and importantly - passion. Most people can agree Phil was worn out by this time due to drugs and pressures of life in a rock & roll band. Mr. Sykes brought some much needed energy and Phil and the band responded with thier strongest studio album in years.

Some of the Robertson era purists who think Lizzy was all about guitar harmonies lambast this record. It is not Jailbreak, Fighting or any other album. I for one am glad its not. I find the dual guitar harmonies of the 1974-1978 era rather boring. I like passion and uuumph in my music. The most commercial era of Lizzy had neither of those precious elements. This record though - does.

Longtime fans of Lizzy know they had serveral different styles and incarnations. Listen to "Thin Lizzy" (1971) and you'll get it. This record is proof of that.

Personal favorite cuts here are: "The Sun Goes Down," "Cold Sweat," "Baby Please Don't Go," and "Heart Attack." The only weak cut here is "Bad Habits." What saves it is that Phil is almost confessing his life has not been good for him.

In the final view, to someone who is reading this review and has only heard "Jailbreak." This sure ain't that record. This is an album that screams more 80s hard rock. Phil, Scott, Darren, John and Brian wind this record with gusto. If you appreciate full-tilt rockin' albums with passion - I think you'll like this one.

I sure do, and still do 18 years on after first hearing it. It holds up.

5 out of 5 stars Thin Lizzy's most impressive to hear!.......2006-02-03

Thin Lizzy's last record may be their biggest suprise. After "Another" new axman John Sykes, one would figure burnout, but "NOT SO FAST MY FRIENDS"! I am lucky enough to have the Regal theatre concert to go along with this record(1983). This release is a clean, hard, & inspired send off to rock's greatest son, Philip Lynott. Fighting was Lizzy's greatest album "musically" and best of any band at that, but "Thunder & Lightning" Rocks like no other.

5 out of 5 stars This IS the one... RIP Phillip.......2006-01-29

Ok friends, this is my very first online review. I only own a few thousand discs, over half of which are either OOP or never in print. This Lizzy album will grow on you like an unholy mold.
Of course I am biased with my opinions, but with good reason !
These guys are in my top 10 bands of all time !!!
Buy this album ! pure and simple ...... I challenge you to listen to all the clips and then say that you didn't enjoy the
Hell out of them ( so to speak)
My personal favorites are "Holy War", "The sun goes down" and This is the one. (The title track should probably not be played in the company of children)

2 out of 5 stars Weak..........2005-11-28

Frankly, I'm shocked by all of the praise this album has received on this site. This is basically 80's schlock-hair metal with no hint of the Thin Lizzy that reigned supreme in the mid-seventies. Lynott sounds tired; probably wasted. I cringed during most of the tunes, excepting the decent "Sun Goes Down". Everything else sounds derivitive, forced, and just plain boring...
