Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars CD was missing!.......2007-02-21

I bought the 2 CD version brand new from a major retailer. When I opened the case I was miffed to find that CD #1 was missing!!! Although I am 38 years old I returned it to the store and got treated like a kid trying to pull a fast one. Thanks alot and great job Century Media!

This was my first Iced Earth experience, I bought this CD because of the rave reviews on Amazon. However, I wasn't blown away with CD#2. These guys have talent but I just wasn't moved as I am with early Maiden or Metallica. It's ok if your looking for something new and different, but this will be my last Iced purchase.

Note: I just picked up another copy (to replace the one that was missing.) When I put CD1 in the player it made funny whirring noises. All of my other CD's (and CD2) play fine without any noise. On the 3rd attempt the noise stopped and it played fine. However, it's possible there was a manufacturing defect with CD1 - hence the missing CD on my first purchase. If not, they may be using real cheap CD's. I would back up your copy immediately after purchase.

4 out of 5 stars Get the 2CD Version!.......2006-07-27

The 2-disc collection Days of Purgatory is an essential release for Iced Earth fans, and the perfect starting point for those new to the band.

Days of Purgatory revisits songs that initially appeared on the first few Iced Earth albums Enter the Realm, Iced Earth, Night of the Stormrider, and Burnt Offerings. Aside from Burnt Offerings, all of the early Iced Earth material suffered from barely adequate vocals. That changed when the mighty Matt Barlow came on board. His powerful voice became as much a part of Iced Earth's brand of thrash-based power metal as Jon Schaffer's lightning riffs.

Days of Purgatory gives Barlow a chance to put his own stamp on the early Iced Earth songs, and believe me it makes all the difference in the world. Instead of cringing when you hear a song like "Angels Holocaust" you'll be banging your head like you're supposed to. No more ball-squeezing vocals! Days of Purgatory also benefits from better sound technology than what was originally available to the band, so the songs sound better than ever.

If for some bizarre reason you actually prefer those early albums and vocalists, then you'll probably want to skip this collection. For the rest of Iced Earth fans, Days of Purgatory is a mandatory purchase. It's also an ideal jumping on point for new Iced Earth fans, as it gives you a nice overview of the band's work.

NOTE: Days of Purgatory was originally released in the US as a single disc. It has since been reissued in its original 2-disc format. Do yourself a favor and get the 2-disc version.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent sound!.......2006-07-19

I know very little of iced earth but this album is great!
I read somewhere that its some older songs re-done with new vocals, I'm not really sure about it. But I must say I was impressed with both the songwriting, and the cool guitar sound (someone once described it to me as a 'galloping' sound). I knew the guitarist was good from Demons&Wizards but he really shines here on Iced Earth. But the vocals were what I really really loved about this album; especially on the song Winter's Night...it works out so well.

Iced Earth is great...they really remind me of Iron Maiden, but a little more 'metal.' I'd highly recommend this album.

4 out of 5 stars Iced Earth - 'Days Of Purgatory' (Century Media Records).......2006-03-30

A great set of tunes here for the true Iced Earth fan.'Days Of Purgatory' reportedly was the band's original name. What you get here are some unreleased demos as well as newly-recorded versions of tracks from their first two albums. The nucleus of guitarist Jon Schaffer and vocalist Mathew Barlow have systematically gotten Iced Earth's sound down to an exact science.Turns out that I like this CD better than I had expected.Nice cover to boot,no?
