5 out of 5 stars One of the best rock albums of all time.......2006-05-03

If you like your rock with feel and lots of groove, you need this cd. Triumph was a Canadian band that was pretty big in the late 70's early 80's and this is the cd that got them known the best. Triumph has put out some stinkers, but this one folks totally rocks from start to finish.

This is the newly remastered one and it does sound very good. However the original album's sound quality was also very good considering it was released in the late 70's, so why should we expect anything but top notch quality here? I love this cd and it's one of my favourites for straight ahead classic rock. I'd say it's right up their with Boston's first release. If you like that old fashioned guitar rock, you need this cd in your collection! This release is 100% accurate to the original album that was released way back when. No extra's or cuts, just 100% true to form.

Oh and for the guy who keeps bitching about it not having his favorite song (insert blinding light show/moon child here!!!), it was never on this album, it was on their first release and was the last track in fact. Check it out!!

Canadian rock rocks!!!!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Triumph's best album? It just might be.......2005-10-23

Rock And Roll Machine (1978.) Triumph's second album.

INTRODUCTION:
In the late seventies through the middle of the eighties, Triumph was a moderately popular classic hard rock act. The three-piece Canadian band consisted of guitarist Rik Emmett, drummer Gil Moore, and bassist/keyboardist Mike Levine. Although the band's popularity didn't really take off until the eighties, when they scored the good majority of their hits, the group released several albums prior to that, in the seventies. The band's self-titled debut was released in 1976. It was followed up with the sophomore album, 1978's Rock And Roll Machine. Was the band desperate to find a sound in this early formative period, or did they rock hard from their earliest days together? You're gonna have to keep reading if you want to find out.

OVERVIEW:
Triumph released their second album, Rock And Roll Machine, in 1976, on the independent record label, Attic. The band consisted of its classic formation of Mike Levine, Rik Emmett, and Gil Moore in this period. Mike Levine produced the album with Doug Hill. Tracklist on the album features Takes Time, Bringing It On Home, Little Texas Shaker, New York City Streets Part One, New York City Streets Part Two, The City, Rocky Mountain Way, and Rock And Roll Machine.

REVIEW:
Long before Triumph started experimenting with the eighties pop-metal sound that most people tend to associate them with, the band flat-out ROCKED. Not to say their eighties stuff was weak, it wasn't, but in the seventies the band served straight-up classic hard rock, and nothing they ever did would compare to the sheer brilliance of their early formative period. Many bands take several albums before they find a good sound all their own, but not Triumph. The Canadian rock trio sounded excellent from their earliest days. Let's take a look at the tracks the band's sophomore album presents.

-SIDE A-

-Takes Time: Triumph knows how to start an album on a high note, and if you need proof of it, you'll get it here. This is straight-up, classic seventies-style hard rock at its absolute best. Levine, Moore, and Emmett absolutely rock on this one. Could the band have started this album on a higher note? Probably not. AWESOME song.

-Bringing It On Home: After kicking off the album with a straight-up rocker, the band slows things way down, beautifully demonstrating their musical diversity. This is another hard rocker, but it's slower and more melodic than the track that kicked off the album. Once again, the band doesn't fail to please. Rik Emmett serves up awesome riffs from start to finish here.

-Little Texas Shaker: This song title is ironic, since it is a disc jockey in Texas who got hold of some of the band's early records, and in a way, was responsible for much of their popularity. As for the song itself, it's excellent. This is straight-up hard rock that managed to hold its own unique sound. Back in this early formative period, Triumph had a hard rock sound all their own, and it's a shame they lost hold of it a few albums later. Another great song.

-New York City Streets Part One: Part one of the two-part epic. This is a short track, clocking in at just over three minutes. His is the band at their slowest and most melodic sound of this era. The melodic, soulful sound the band manages to create on this album makes it one of their most unique and diverse pieces.

-New York City Streets Part Two: Part two of the two-part epic. Now, this is about as different from the first part as you could possibly get! The band starts rocking hard and heavy once again, picking up the pace dramatically. Once again, the vocals on this song are reminiscent of Geddy Lee, from the other Canadian power trio, Rush. Every member of the band absolutely shines on this one. These guys knew how to rock hard.

-SIDE B-

-The City: This multi-part, lengthy track is often thought of as the band's magnum opus from there early days. And after you listen to it, you'll see why. An epic rocking instrumental sequence kicks things off beautifully. And then, things get slow and melodic. Rik Emmett's vocals in the melodic portion are absolutely incredible. The final minute is hard and heavy rock, and it closes out the piece nicely. Anyone who claims this song is an excellent one is right.

-Rocky Mountain Way: This is a cover of the song Joe Walsh recorded and put out in 1973, on his classic The Smoker You Drink The Player You Get Album. Interestingly, the band doesn't do a whole lot to the song. For the most part, this is a straight-up cover song - no big changes were made to the original formula. I'm not complaining, though - changes often destroy cover songs. Walsh's original was great the way it was, and the band keeping the song true to the original was probably smart.

-Rock And Roll Machine: The title track closes out the album, and that title could have been any more appropriate. The intro and outro to this song are hard-rocking pieces that actually sound a bit on the punk-metal side - definitely not the Triumph most people know and love! However, the vast majority of the song is the bridge in the middle, which is essentially a Rik Emmett guitar solo - and a damn good one, too. The band really finished the album off on a high note.

And there you have it. On their debut album, Triumph demonstrated from day one that they could rock and roll. And rock and roll they did once again on their sophomore effort. Although the album and its predecessor was not very successful at its time of release, it did get reissued on a major label a few years later when the band was really starting to come into their own sound. That helped boost the popularity of the band's earlier sound. Overall, I have to say that this is a very impressive release from the band. If you're at all a fan of classic rock/hard rock, this is worth buying.

EDITION NOTES:
Most of Triumph's albums have gotten a long overdue reissuing in America. And to make things even better, these reissues are of the original Canadian albums! The original LPs that were released in America back in the day (the first few albums they put out) were NOT the same as the originals (for example, the American version of Rock And Roll Machine was a mixture of tracks from the debut and the Canadian version of the album.) Thank goodness the originals are finally available in America! There aren't any bonus cuts, sadly, but as a whole these remasters are satisfying.

AN IMPORTANT NOTE:
I need to close out this review by clearing up a very common misconception people tend to make about the CD issue of this album - THIS IS A REISSUE OF THE ORIGINAL CANADIAN ALBUM, NOT THE ORIGINAL AMERICAN ALBUM! The original Canadian version of the album DID NOT include Blinding Light Show/Moonchild, which is why it isn't on here. In Canada, Blinding Light Show/Moonchild was on the DEBUT album (which has since been reissued under the name In The Beginning.) The reissue of the debut DOES include that track. So if you buy the CD reissues of the Canadian versions of the debut and Rock And Roll Machine, you will have all of the tracks that were on the American Rock And Roll Machine - and plenty of others that weren't. In other words, Blinding Light Show/Moonchild isn't on here because IT ISN'T SUPPOSED TO BE ON HERE - it's supposed to be on the debut (which it is on, on the CD reissue.)

5 out of 5 stars Their best!.......2005-08-31

This is Triumph's best album. As for the other two reviews, those missing songs are on "In The Beginning". A couple songs from that album were apparently tacked onto "RnR Machine" when it went to CD, and the first album was taken out of print. With "In The Beginning" back in print, there is no need for repetition, so buy both!

5 out of 5 stars The best song is here: The City.......2005-08-04

Please note that this cd is the release of the european version of this cd. It contains an amazing song that my friends and I heard at that time which is "City". It is an absolutely fantastic song, and the people in Canada and US paid horrendous sums at that time to get a copy of that record.
I know that Moon Child and Blinding Light show are missing here, but hey: if you are looking for a rarity once you will be blown away by the guitar of "City"...
And you can still buy a copy of the original Canada/US version...

1 out of 5 stars the best song...is gone..........2005-07-09

o.k., this is my first review for amazon. i remember this record so well, as i had it when i was a teenager. i absolutely loved it! i remember a song from it, that to me, made the entire album! i mean, all the songs are wonderful...but, this one song was hauntingly beautiful, and quite atmosphrerically moving. (Moon Child / Blinding Light Show) is the name of that masterpiece! i swear, i cried ever time i listened to it! i am now 33, and it still haunts my mind 'til this day! a few months ago, a friend of mine had found the cd copy of this album. i had gotten all excited about this thing...i get it in the mail...open it up...to my absolute and most painful horror...i turn the cd around to check the track listing...guess what?!?! it was left off of the cd!!! ohhh, i didn't even open it because i was so in sheer disbelief! how-the-hell could they (record label, company, whatever...) not include this song that so RIGHTFULLY BELONGS on it?! bah! so, i mail it back to my friend, and explain to him why i sent it back, he understood, but until i had mentioned to him about this, it had never even crossed his mind. i guess i must now try and re-locate the actual album (lp). i highly recommend, if you love Triumph...DO NOT BUY THIS ALBUM ON CD FORMAT!!! you will be denied one of their most wonderful pieces! LONG LIVE TRIUMPH!!!
