Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Katherine Turman should not review Clutch.......2006-10-17

I think Katherine's review sucks. She has no basis for comparison. Fu Manchu? pshaw. I don't see how Fu Manchu is anything like Clutch. Danzig? Uh, your mother. Best not to bring Monster Magnet into the fray, either. All great bands, but all unique and different from the guys from Baltimore.
I feel bad that she was saddled with this review, as she clearly did her best without having some comparable bands in mind, and indeed, who does compare Clutch with?
But, sucky sucky review not so lucky.
Clutch in concert is one of the tightest, most precise outfits I have witnessed. The experience, for me, grazed on respect, flirted with incredulity, feasted on power, reveled in charging bliss.

I'm buying this disc based upon all that. And the fact that every other Clutch album sits on a rack opposite (and a little to the right) the CD player in envy of the next time its go-round number comes up.

3 out of 5 stars Could you please turn the vocals up?.......2006-09-15

If the vocals were any louder on this cd, it would have to have been called "Neil Fallon Yells For an Hour at the Googleplex".

4 out of 5 stars Clutch.......2005-09-20

Great CD. I have been listening to Cluth now since 1993. They are the superb rock band. With their mix of all types of genre's and great lyrics, certainly a good buy.

5 out of 5 stars Keeping it tight live.......2004-01-24

Clutch has a reputation for taking its songs in different places live. In this disc, they chose performances which are fairly brief. The only bit of jamming is on Big News. The best thing about the disc (for me) is the way it rehabilitates the songs on "Transnational Speedway League". I don't like that disc very much, but I mistook the live versions for new songs. The singing and playing is good throughout, and if you're a Clutch fan, you'll like this disc.

3 out of 5 stars Not a great live album, but a good best of.......2003-10-21

Don't be fooled by the mid-tempo introduction, Clutch releases all their energy right from the get go on "Pure Rock Fury". You want brutal angry rock? You got it! "12oz. Epilogue" and "The Soap Makers" keep the fires of hell burning. Clutch isn't all about temperament, "Brazenhead" and "El Jefe" shows their, dare I say funky side. These tracks are just a few that display a fondness for that 70's sound. You have to love the riff on "Sea of Destruction". The song is heavy, but with the inclusion of a melodic lick. "Rats" on the other hand has a strong and somewhat eerie riff throughout. Oh yeah! How can you not bob your head after hearing the ominous laugh that begins "Careful with that Mic...". Neil Fallon is at his lyrical, tongue-twisting best here. Clutch add a longer than usual conclusion to the track which is sure to please. I must say that I was impressed that Clutch worked 'hee haw, hee haw' into the chorus of "Rock and Roll Outlaw". Never did I think those words would ever be used seriously in a rock song.

Bottom Line:
There's no denying that Clutch is a great live band. They blew me away when I saw them last fall. Unfortunately, Live at the Googolplex, doesn't capture the true experience. The recordings were spread out between three different performances and somehow the crowd is not very prevalent. Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed the music. Even though Clutch is a rock band, they have a great funk vibe to them. It was evident in the extended interludes. Neil's harsh vocal style embodies the lifestyle of a rock and roll road warrior. Some of his sarcastic lyrics are humorous. If you want to hear a great sampling of Clutch's music, this disc is a good place to start.
