Customer Reviews:
Spectacular.......2007-02-14
Morbid Angel's Covenant is a fantastic album and is a must for all fans of death metal. Well, there's not much more to say than that.
Their tightest album released to date........2007-02-03
From the first time I heard the song rapture on Headbanger's Ball, I was hooked. This is by far one of the most stand out Florida Death Metal bands formed in 1984, they released Mearciless Death independently 1988 prior to their Alters of Madness release in 1989 on earache records. After switching record companies twice, they landed on Giant Records, and this was their first, and possibly greatest release (right beside Blessed Are The Sick).
This album was fifth full album, and was produced by Flemming Rasmusssen (of metallica fame), and this album shows it's tight production. Rapture, the lead of song is full of change ups and a blast beat beat that just cruches you right to the bone. My absolute favorite song on this album is God of Emptiness, just a dark thundering song that could be a tribal chant. That song was even featured in a bevis and butthead episode. The other highlingts are Angel of Disease, a bit of a faster, lighter song, and World of S*** (The Promised Land). Trey Azagthoth really has put together one of the difinitive American Death Metal bands, right beside the likes of Obituary, Deicide, and Slayer. Pick this Album up, You will dig this.
The Death Metal Gods.......2007-01-23
When Morbid Angel arrived on the Death Metal scene, they brought more to the table then your ordinary Death Metal band. They proved that it didnt all have to be about "playing as fast as you can" and added intelligent Guitar solos and Thunderous Blast Beats to the element. "Covenant" remains my favorite Morbid Angel album. Even though all of their albums are great, "Convenant" might be one of the top death Metal albums of all times. Be warned though. IF you are expecting all out gore Metal at lightning paced speeds, then this album is not for you. Its not going to sound like something along the lines of Cannibal Corpse, Napalm Death, or Vomitory. Yes, there are some times when the album picks up with some "speed" but most of Morbid Angels tunes are dark, slow, and with thunderous Blast Double Bass Beats and with mind blurring guitar solos. Thats what makes them so unique in the Death Metal world. ENJOY
Destined To Be A Classic.......2006-07-06
A most blackened death metal album indeed; what I enjoy most about Covenant is that it partially avoids the problem of most DM albums, which is repetition. Although the brutality is non-stop, there are enough changes in tempo and mood on this album that adds an overall sense of variety. A minor complaint are the lyrics, which contain frankly lame and outdated "Satanic" imagery; otherwise, the lyrics are rather interesting, possibly the bands finest. Now, for the band itself: David Vincent is probably the most brutal DM vocalist out there, and his supportive bass lines are quite good as well (they are no less audible than on any Slayer relase). Guitarist Trey Azeghthoth is undoubtedly one of the finest in the genre; his style is an eclectic mix that sort of sounds like Hanneman/King, Joe Satriani and Vernon Reid all blended into one. Finally, Pete Sandoval delivers quite a punch on the double bass and snare. His style is very clean, never falls behind. As far as the actual music goes, there are really no bad songs on Covenant, but IMHO I feel the strongest tracks are "Vengeance is Mine," "Lion's Den" and, of course, "God of Emptiness" of Beavis and Butthead fame...BOW TO ME FAITHFULLY!!!
Lifeless? Dull? Yeah right........2006-06-06
I decided to review this perticular album because its the unholy day and because its so dark. "Covenant" by Morbid Angel is anything but lifeless or dull. Infact, its my favorite MA album. Even though there's only one guitarist on this album, it still sounds like there's a dual-guitar assault on each song (except for "Nar Mattaru"). David Vincent's vocals got alot harsher than in their previous album "Altars of Madness," and unfortunately, his basslines aren't that audible due to the mediocre production. Trey Azagthoth's guitarring is awesome, his riffs and solos have also improved, he also plays keyboards in "Nar Mattaru." Pete Sandoval, where to begin with him. His fast but on cue beats and hypnotic double bass makes me rank him with Dave Lombardo.
Every song on here kicks, "Nar Mattaru" is done only with keyboards and its one of the creepiest songs I've ever heard, even though there's no vocals or guitar. "Rapture, "Vengeance is Mine," and "Blood on My Hands" are the highlights of this great death metal album.
This is THE best album of 1993, if you're looking for an album from the early 90's that isn't grunge or alternative metal (both sub-genres suck), this is for you.
Today is June 6, 2006; the darkest day.
