Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Shallow Listeners..........2006-09-29

I have listened to this album hundreds of times since its release. And while it took me some time to get over the abundance of spoken word, I have never heard a greater album.

I'm a Pain of Salvation fan who loves the music and ignores the bad reviews because their music speaks to me the way I feel it. It's a subjective art. But I'm afraid that many other people rely on the opinions of others, and when they read nonsense like, "spoken word drivel" or "non-musical", it almost hurts. New listeners, fear not, there IS music...and what music it is. Even during the spoken word. In fact, some of their better flowing melodies occur during these moments. But their strength is in the variety and the quality of said variety.

For those looking for metal, look elsewhere. This album has its moments of heaviness, but if that's all you look for in music, you are the most shallow listener imaginable. While I love Lamb of God and Pantera for different reasons, and PoS's heavier albums, I'm absolutely satisfied with the avenue they travelled on this go. I've even heard some people argue the technical aspects of the players. I laughed and ignored the review. As a drummer, this album has some of the most interesting rhythms to date...but they don't over-use them. This is one of the many reasons I respect this band. They're humble (even if you think "BE" is pretentious...it's NOT).

Pain of Salvation shouldn't be judged on an album-to-album basis. Leave that to the audible garbage you hear on clear channel. "BE" is a brilliant addition to the PoS catalog and should be viewed as a whole rather than on its own. Can't wait for "Scarsick"!

5 out of 5 stars Pain of Salvation - Thoughtful, Disturbing, Progressive.......2006-09-22

BE is the PoS album that had to really grow on me before I could truly appreciate its complexity and its stark, uncompromising beauty. It's harsh and even chilling, depicting a world at war with itself - humanity, nature, even god. It is also about God, creating himself, humanity creating him, and humanity demanding some answers from HIM as to why things are. It's all over the board thematically and yet the threads that bind each song are subtle.

This isn't the album that you go cruising down the road in a convertable to, but rather sitting alone in a candlelit room with headphones and a lot of time to digest the various and sundry layers that comprise this masterwork.

Daniel Gildenlow is a genius and one has to be intelligent enough and a seeker enough to follow him through this journey of the mind. The musicianship is superlative, lush in some areas, spare and uncompromising in others. My personal favourite songs are Dea Pecunae, which if you really listen, depicts a desparate coupling between sex and money (that part left me with two minds, both aroused and uncomfortable at the same time). I also loved Iter Impius (I do hope I spelled that correctly), a song that grabs you softly at the piano-nuanced beginning then goes for the jugualr by the climatic end with Gildenlow's tortured-soul growls.

BE is a disturbing album and for days afterward left me in shivers, yet I could not (and still cannot) resist being drawn into its intricate web of melody and concept. I have yet to see the Live-DVD version of the album, and unfortunately due to Daniel Gildenlow's refusal to be fingerprinted like a common criminal before being issued a passport (a stand that as much as I would love to see this incredible band live, I wholeheartedly agree with), they may never play here in the U.S. Still, PoS can only be proud of yet another album that takes prog farther than anyone had ever dared dream. Some folks who've reviewed it hate it, but I really and truly hope they'll give it another listen.

2 out of 5 stars Wow... in a bad way........2006-09-03

I'll start on the good points. Tracks 3 and 14 are really awesome, and the concept is quite intriguing.

That's all.

Now the bad parts. For one, the flute on this album is probably the best part, which is sad considering the flautist isn't really even a member of the band. There's also some great piano work, but, for example, the 4th track which is predominently piano, is pretty much the same great thing over and over for 5 minutes straight, which makes it not so great.

A lot of times while listening to this, I said "wow this sounds great" when a new song started, but then I was disappointed after about 30 seconds of said song.

Before anyone who's a fan of this album heckles me and dismisses me as a closed-minded person who shuts out anything that is different, I can assure you I am not. This album just lacks what I think any good album of music should have: music. There is just so much concept material in the form of narration, random samples, fake newscasts, and other various non-musical talking and noise.

Here is what my big thought is on this album. If they took the concept, and made a movie out of it, rather than a piece of music, it would be fantastic. It's intriguing, intelligent, and original, I just don't think it's good music.

2 out of 5 stars Boring indeed.......2006-07-13

I think the album may have interesting narrative or philosophy behind it, and you know what? I don't care really, cause the music is random, chopped up, boring. The music do not engage you in whatever philosophical endevore POS has gone into, I dont feel it anyway, music should speak louder than words, i think the music tell's you alot more than the text that follows it. It's one of the albums that you don't really remember after listening to, it's just not strong and doens't envoke strong emotions in me.

2 out of 5 stars goes down like a box of rusty nails.......2006-06-14

I do not have a PHD in Music Theorey or Philosophy (or Theology for that matter), but I am open minded to adventurous music. I respect music that takes chances, breaks the norm and packs passion. During one listening session to "Be" w/ the headphones on, I dozed off into a mellow sleep only to violently waken to the countless screaming violence and chaotic samplage. The flow to this epic drags the listener over spike strips. The entire album goes down like a box of nails. It is a painful and unpleasant listen. At least old Ministry albums gave the listener an adrenaline rush. In between the shrapnel of samplings "Be" is just boring.
