Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Awesome CD.......2007-01-11

Every Dissection CD that I have heard is awesome. I'm glad I got to know them before Jon's passing.

5 out of 5 stars Something no death or black metal fan should be without.......2006-08-30

And that's not hyperbole, either. In its own bleak, cold-hearted, obsessed way, Storm of the Light's Bane (Where Dead Angels Lie) is a true '90s classic of the genre they now call "blackened death metal" (i.e. death metal with elements of black). If that's your thing, then I can't begin to tell you how lucky you were to stumble across this album.

In fact, even if death metal isn't your thing, I still recommend you listen to all the samples and see what you think--because Storm of the Light's Bane was what first got me interested in that kind of music, and I haven't looked back. Aside from a few solemn instrumental tracks, this masterpiece of the Swedish death metal band Dissection is a cruel, relentless assault with music, drums, and especially vocals--but the amazing part is, you might end up enjoying it. I know I did, and I used to be a regular rock-and-roll fan.

Here's a brief overview of all the tracks. (It is based on the version of the album I strongly recommend getting; the reissued, remastered one with 13 tracks.)

1. At the Fathomless Depths

An intense and purposeful guitar riff; a fitting start to the album. (6/10)

2. Night's Blood

Very good; melodic and gripping. It shows you what to expect from the entire album, but chances are it'll also make you want to hear every second of it anyway. Opening songs don't get much better. (8/10)

3. Unhallowed

One listen, and it's clear why this is still one of the most popular Dissection songs ever. (9/10)

4. Where Dead Angels Lie

A dark, sorrowful black metal fairy tale. Extremely original and provocative, and another premier Dissection song. (9.5/10)

5. Retribution-Storm of the Light's Bane

There's a subtle melody that carries this one; listen closely to every note you can, and you'll see just how good it really is. (8.5/10)

6. Thorns of Crimson Death

Pure musical genius. About as catchy as blackened death metal can get, and as beautiful. The best track on the album. (10/10)

7. Soulreaper

A raw, powerful track; not wonderful, but still quite good. (8/10)

8. No Dreams Breed in Breathless Sleep

A nice interlude; quiet, solemn piano tune before the heavy stuff resumes. (7/10)

9. Where Dead Angels Lie (demo version)

Not very different from the first version, and not quite as focused--but still a great song. (8.5/10)

10. Elisabeth Bathory

Sinister and strange, this track also contains the few spoken words on the album. The fiendish melody lacks some depth, but doesn't go on for too long, which definitely helps. (7.5/10)

11. Anti Christ

This one is fast and furious, with a scathing delivery and message. Surprisingly short, though. (8/10)

12. Feathers Fell

Very short tune before the final song, with only a few whispered vocals. Good for what it is. (6/10)

13. Son of Mourning

The last song takes you for a ride with its energetic, tumbling meelody and strangely triumphant vocals. A good ending to the unforgettable experience that is this CD. (8.5/10)

"Storm" won't be around forever--get it while you can and experience its dark beauty for yourself. I did, and I've been crazy about it ever since.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Metal Record.......2006-06-16

Storm of the Light's Bane is a classic. If you are a fan of extreme heavy metal and you have not heard this record yet, then buy this along with "The Somberlain" as quick as you can. You are missing out on some of two of the best metal records ever recorded.

Every song on this record is a keeper. I really can't think of anything bad to say about this record. "Night's Blood" is one of the best songs ever recorded.

5 out of 5 stars Through The Howling Wind He Comes Ever Closer.......2006-05-25

Trying to mind their unfortunate history, Dissection is a prime example of genuine Melodic Death/Black Metal in my case. The beauty of Melodic Death mixed with the intricacy of Black is too tasteful to believe. I think of them as Death Metal with a shake of *Black* Pepper.

During the winter of 2004 I stumbled across the cover of this CD and found it to be very interesting above the positive reviews. I knew I had to check them out after reading very little about them, so after a few samples I was already hooked, namely on "Where Dead Angels Lie" and "Thorns Of Crimson Death. By the way, the lyrics are always fulfilling and Jon is always on top of his game vocal/guitar wise.

-"Unhallowed" starts with a cool and speedy riff. Three and a half minutes in we are treated with cool solos, which is always a good thing. Near six minutes it slows down to sweet acoustic playing, but erupts back up to the last catchy riff.
-"Where Dead Angels Lie" charges through with well done playing by everyone, that is, till Jon tears things up the way he always does it perfectly. I love the particularly brief solos like at 1:57 and at 2:10. The one at 3:20 is the grandest of them, which leads into Opeth-esque atmosphere (Even though Opeth came out with their debut the same year this did). It roars out like a banshee scream and with bats flying out a cave. Truly a great track.
-"Thorns Of Crimson Death" is my favorite one on here. I especially love the way it starts with simple plucks and rides along afterwards with the great riff. Everything here is top notch from beginning to end. Drumming gets super speedy at points and falls down to acoustic playing after a bunch of explosions. Starts clear again with another great riff that leads onto my favorite solo on the album. This then heads back to the main riff of the song, which exits terrifically.
-"No Dreams Breed In Breathless Sleep" is a peaceful piano instrumental. Of course I'm not all classical but this suits extremely well on this album with the songs previous and after. It feels superbly fitting and comfortable to be on here.

So I guess now I should recommend this to you. The production may be stale to some people, but it is by all means bearable and is done in the best manner. It would be a wise choice to pick -Storm Of The Light's Bane- anyway you can. Undeniably an unheard Swedish classic reigning supreme right under our noses.
