Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Certainly not their best........2007-01-20

As a long time fan of Def Leppard (since 1982) I must say that I'm very disappointed in this album. First of all it sounds way too poppy. Britney Spears could've recorded this and there wouldn't be much difference. Secondly some of the songs are written by the same people that wrote hits for Britney Spears and N'SYNC. So what does that tell you about this album. When Def Leppard writes their own and produces their own album it rocks. Clearly their best days are besides them but that doesn't mean they have to suck either. Sorry guys but this is one bad album. There are a few bright spots but otherwise it sucks. Even Slang was better, and that's a stretch. Try finding "Mutt" Lange and produce some better material.

3 out of 5 stars Satisfying pop/rock album but a rejection of the band's heritage.......2007-01-05

Def Leppard was a principal part of the new wave of British heavy metal(NWOBHM) during the late '70s. In the '80s, the band broke away from the pack to gain massive commercial appeal with the now classic Pyromania and Hysteria albums. For fans of Def Leppard since those early years it's been a long, hard road. Def Leppard, much like Sting, has evolved far from the musical heritage that made them famous. The Leppards are no longer a heavy metal band; the soaring guitar leads provided by Phil Collen and Vivian Campbell (a former Dio guitarist) have been watered down greatly since Adrenalize, and the "thunder god" Rick Allen's drums feel a bit overpowered by the bands increased reliance on synthesizers. Even Joe Elliot's once screaming vocals have been toned down to the level of an Adrenalize power-ballad.

This is not to say that X is a bad album. It will be an enjoyable album for anyone who prefers the safer, more accessible pop/rock sound of bands like Coldplay, Duran Duran, and Good Charlotte. Given the dominance of punk and hip-hop influenced pop/rock acts, Def Leppard fills a niche by being a hard rock band doing pop. The Def Leppard sound stands out from other pop/rock bands; but there is still very little rock here to enjoy. A long-time fan looking for a return to the band's metal days will be completely disappointed.

3 stars for the engineering and the band's refined sound, and for what it is.

5 out of 5 stars A totally awesome album!.......2006-12-09

Def Leppard's 'X' album is my favorite album, only second to their 1996 release 'Slang'. I've had it pretty much since it was released and it still sounds as fresh as it did the day I first put it in my cd player. Everything you'd expect in a Def Leppard album is here, loud guitars, multi-layered vocals and a more than solid rhythm section in bassist Rick Savage and drummer Rick Allen. They don't make bands like this anymore. You know when you listen to Def Leppard or see them in concert that you're listening to or seeing a group who have been through more than most bands and have come out on the other side weathered but not broken.

5 out of 5 stars THIS CD IS GREAT!.......2006-11-04

I love all Def Leppard's albums! This X (TEN) CD was highly under-rated. They should have received more promotion from the record company. I love the song "Everyday"! It's the best song on the CD. Unfortunately, Bon Jovi had a song with the same title and the Leps record company did not release this song as a single. That was a shame! This is a great CD, as all Lep CDs are awesome! I love them all! Def Leppard rocks! -- have you joined the Def Leppard E-Team on Myspace yet?!

3 out of 5 stars To sell out, a band must be relatively hard in the first place........2006-09-11

Let me start by making two things clear:
1. Hard does not necessarily equal good, and
2. Def Leppard have ALWAYS prioritized commercial appeal over art.
Given 1 and 2 above, one should not really be surprised that DL comes off like an attempt at a boy band on this album, and saying that they "sold out" would be missing the point of why they existed as a band in the first place. Hence, the fairest way to judge them is by asking if they accomplish their own goal; Do the songs sound like good hit singles? "You're so Beautiful" and "Long Long Way to Go" are two great tracks that I never get tired of, while "Now", "Torn to Shreds", "Gravity", "Cry", and "Girl Like You" also hit the spot if you're in the right mood. On the other hand, "Four Letter Word" is one of the cheesiest songs my ears have been exposed to, and all the other songs that I have not mentioned are simply bland and skippable.

All in all, a clearly $$$-oriented effert (as is virtually everything in the Def Leppard catalog) which contains it's fair share of catchy songs.

Word of advice, if you are a man in your early 20's like me, this album is best played while trying to score with a woman twice your age.
