Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2007-02-28

Demonstrates the song writing power of Jerry Cantrell. His best work by far.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent For Fans Starving In Today's Post-Grunge Mess.......2007-02-06

Jerry Cantrell found himself in a difficult position after Layne Staley's death. With a bunch of post-grunge bands hitting the radio and finding new fans, fans of the real glory days were left wanting more. This album sees Cantrell creating music that harkens back to those days. The album is musically and thematically powerful, with Cantrell reflecting on his time with Alice in Chains and expressing the emotions he wallowed and coped through after Staley's tragedy.

Cantrell created some of the best riffs and melodies to come out of the Seattle scene, and his undeniable ability is showcased in "Boggy Depot". Songs such as "Dickeye", "Cut You In" and "Keeps The Light On" show how Cantrell has lost none of his class, creating some unmistakably grunge-sounding riffs, combining the idiosyncratic combination of simplicity, a minor key, and a heavy yet warm guitar tone. His slower and more melodic playing was always a highlight to AIC's sound, showcased in some of their powerful ballads ("Down In A Hole", "Rooster", "Nutshell" etc), and "Boggy Depot" sees Cantrell expanding on this style and sound. There are more slower songs than I initially expected, but this seems to appropriately reflect his state of mind at the time, as the slower songs set a far moodier and desolate atmosphere than the rocking ones. The best of these moody down-tempo dirges include "My Song" which sounds like it has come straight off "Dirt", "Breaks My Back" and "Cold Piece" are equally outstanding. Despite the excellence of these slower songs I would have preferred a few heavier and more rocking tunes to give a better balance, hence my reasoning for taking off a star.

I feel mention should also go to Cantrell's vocals here. His vocal harmonies with Staley was a crucial aspect of the AIC sound, and gave extra power to the vocals. His voice has surprisingly good range, switching between warm and melancholy to raspy and aggressive. While he is not up to standards with the great Staley, he certainly holds his own and emphasises the strong music.

For fans of grunge fed up with token wannabes, this should give you great pleasure. Just don't be expecting another "Dirt" or "Alice In Chains".

5 out of 5 stars Downright Gritty Grungy Gunslinging Creeper Rock. Very nice........2006-07-18

Message to the reader: JUST GO OUT & BUY ALL HIS WORK
Jerry. Don't ever stop song writing. Come home to Seattle and play Boggy Depot live. For those who were only just born when you were at the climax of your career have lost so much.

-His music has engrained itself in me and everyone who has ever taken a good long listen. After I let it all sink in, it reflects in my own playing.

-This Album is a must buy. If you are considering buying this album don't think a second longer just do it.

-The melodies are as solid as it gets. Especially if you like keychanges and out of the ordinary phrasing.

-The best thing a musician or music lover could do for themselves

-Must look at Mad Season, Temple of the Dog, Degredation Trip & The Cranberries. You may also like Elliot Smith He's something else considering he does it all most of the time as well as
Jim White.

-What was Cantrell like at his first open mics? Was he shy or a somber eyed quiet but powerful presentor?

Amazon's review program is excellent! Buy these albums today!

4 out of 5 stars It'll grow on you..........2006-02-09

I'm gonna start out saying i dont even own this album. i downloaded all the songs from the internet off this album. don't worry though. the reason i did this because i BOUGHT degredation trips a few days ago and wanted to hear more jerry cantrell. its a good album. at first you wont be all impressed but just give it a few listens and you should be hooked. as everyone said before, thsi isn't alice in chains, but it is still very similar no doubt.
the first song starts out with a weird intro that sounds cool and leads to the heaviness of the song dickeye. personally i dont really care for this song, its too commercial sounding.

cut you in is a great rock song that is similar to alice in chains but once again, does not sound exactly like them.

My song is a love song and has SOMEWHAT of an aic feel, only their softer side. it is a great song and has an addicting beat after a few listens.

settling down is another softer rock song. it has some heavy parts. this is definately a song that grows on you. the first listen is nothing impressive

breaks my back, similar to settling down in that it takes a few listens, only it is a longer and heavier song.

jesus hands is definately the most AIC sounding song on the album. it almost sounds like something from DIRT. it almsot sounds like rain when i die. its a great song

devil by his side is just an average sounding song to me. nothing special. maybe i havent listened to it enough to appreciate it but its not too great

keep the light on also almost sounds like aic. its a heavier song and you should like it on the first try.

satisfy is probly the softest song on the album and is pretty relaxing.

hurt a long time is pretty good, no but its actually damn good. its also an accoustic song except for the chorus parts i happen to like accoustic songs (buy alice in chains unplugged and tell me what you think)

between is a....get this... a country song....oh no not that! yea and im not that fond of it but watever theres always gonna be one not so great song on an album. the chorus is very good but the rest isnt great.

coldpiece is wierd. i dont know what to think of it. at some points it sounds like frogs (alice in chains song) only softer. the guitar riffs in the background sounds similar to aic's song i know sumthin (bout you). but overall this song really doesnt sound much like aic at all. their is a piano in it btw. its a good song if your in a weird mood. come to think of it... i just remembered les claypool of primus plays the bass guitar on this album. i bt jerry was running out of ideas and les claypool told him to make a jam song. cuz thats what this is. les claypool is known for his jamming in his hippy concerts.

BTW if you are deciding whether or not to get degredation trips or this album here is my reccomendation: if you want more of a heavy side get degredation trips, if you want a softer side or maybe less sounding like aic, get this. but dont expect to be impressed by either one of them at first. it takes awhile to fully like the music on both albums. after that you will love it. personally i like degredation trips better, which is what most people will agree with.

5 out of 5 stars great solo effort from the chain .......2005-11-19
