old school kick a$! metal.......2007-01-24
If you're a fan of old school death and want to hear a huge influence on almost every extreme band than look no further. Venom may not have been the greatest musicians in the world but what they did they did extremely well. Namely pissing alot of parents off and offending every bible thumper that saw this album, notice I say saw and not heard, as I'm sure the holy rollers s?!t themselves when they saw the cover art. When me and my wife were dating her holy roller aunt use to come over to try and "save" me, so I'd slap this cassette (I'm old!) on the stereo and turn it to "11" (ha,ha) you would think she was on fire as fast as she would run out of the house....ahhh memories! anyway, if you like old school thrash, death, black, white purple or whatever color they call it nowadays you need to pick this album up and take it for a spin, give it a few listens and then move on to their second album "Black Metal!!" But probably don't look any farther than that as the magick(?) disapears after that one. Although I haven't listened to "metal black" yet. oh well, some other day. Now I have to get back to playing my cardboard cut out guitar along to number of the beast, c-ya!
Black Metal Made By Sub-par retards.......2006-12-31
Venom are total posers. Anybody who believes the stupid things these "Musicians" say are imbeciles. None of the "songs" on this album are worth remembering because VENOM ARE NOT REALLY SATANISTS! They are posers. They pose as satanists, thats the definition of posers. They did this to trick dumbasses into buying records. Welcome to Hell is a boring listening experience that a 12 year old would find scary. People were stupid back then for believing that Cronos was a satanist. Venom < Warrant
O My.........2006-12-18
This is a bit of a mix of punk and 60's into 70's metal isn't it? I can drink tea with this, it'S Brittish. This is really considered one of the first Satanic bands. If not the first. tongue and cheek songs about tearing babies and is there a line or something about "tearing into her flesh I insist"? Or some such thing on one of their albums? Punk Bass and heavy trippy rock, one of the best albums ever I'm afrAid. A teacher would have been hit in the back of the head with a pencil propelled by a rubber band in the early days of their upbringing..Evil in League with Satan I guess. I Love this, and I'm afraid I have to give it quite a good rating. Tea. I think it's time..
The Godfathers of extreme metal.......2006-09-23
Yes, as you probably know this album kicked started the wonderful genre of extreme metal. So you like Suffocation? You like Emperor? You like SLAYER? If you didn't have this band you might not have those other great bands, Venom are basically the "Atari/Nintendo" of EM. Everything that is METAL is here too; pure evilness, chock full of Satanic lyrics, rebellion and angst, raw production (probably the rawest album at the time in 1981), and even chicks! They took that "live life in fast lane" attitude of Motorhead that I love and added their blend of evil that had never even been fathomed. The album may have a few flaws but it is one of the top 10 most groundbreaking metal albums ever.
These songs are awesome people. First you have Sons of Satan which is evil speed metal goodness, the title track with that seething voice of Cronos and even has a nifty instrumental interlude in Mayhem With Mercy which has a very eerie and ambient feel to it, perhaps it was can be called a precursor to future ambient black metal bands. Other highlights are Poison with sick riffs and great lyrics about being with wh*res (which I have experience with), the early BM classics Witching Hour with it's sweet solo and catchiness and my personal fave here IN LEAGUE WITH SATAN! F*ckin' right doggie! The song comes complete with a backwards Satanic intro, tribal-like drums, and slow brooding riffs. I literally feel I'm 'south of heaven' when this song is one. One last thing worthy of noting is the opening riff to the album's closer I believe to the HEAVIEST riff in 1981 hands down.
The album is another rarity in the fact that the bonus track DO NOT BLOW! Yes, it's true! You get the usual group of 'demo versions' of songs but you also get cool singles from the day like Bloodlust.
All in all a sick album, and of course the 'E' word comes to mind. You know what word I'm talking about. Go get it to see the roots of extreme metal. I also agree with Marxist Matt that their next album Black Metal is much better, however.
P.S. Ok so it's not trve kvlt black metal but so what? This OWNS most kvlt junk I've heard.
Not for all tastes...........2006-09-18
Back in the early 80's, Welcome to Hell was an extremely pivotal album. Lars Ulrich of Metallica even stated this album to be the very first thrash release. I hate to agree with that idiot but I agree. It is of course still arguable, but there is no doubt that hits album is the stepping stone to thrash and black/death metal alike.
This album of course is the result of three British "musicians" getting together wanting to make the most in-your-face metal ever created (in the early 80's anyway). It's like they wanted to take what Motorhead started and take it not one, but many steps forward! The band took shockingly evil lyrics and mixed it with loud, heavy, and rather sloppy musicianship! I personally love the results but some people sure won't
One reason people may not like this album is because of the major rough production. I personally kind of dig it as it gives the album a unique sound. With Venom's lyrical and image choice, they're actually lucky to get this recorded at all! Most production studies would have frowned on their musical choice so it's a "miracle" that Welcome to Hell was even recorded!
The album kicks off with Sons of Satan, an extremely thrashy track. Right away people new this wasn't your average Motorhead rip-off! These guys were for real! All the songs present on this album have, for lack of a better word, great "groove" to them that is extremely different than the black metal the band would inspire in the future. What surprising is that even with the albums poor production, many of the songs have very sing-along-able courses! Try listening to Live Like an Angel with singing the course along with Cronos. "Live like an angel, die like a devil, got a place in hell reserved for me. Live Like an angel, die like a devil, gonna burn in hell it's where I want to be!" Ouch!!
Some people slat Venom for not having musical talent, but that is harsh. Sure they may not be the best metal musicians in the genre but they deserve MUCH more credit then they get. First of all the production doesn't help in this case. Listen to some of Venom's later releases such as Prime Evil or Resurrection for proof. Mantas is actually quit a good guitarist and Cronos has a likeable voice that fits this kind of "in-your-face" metal music perfectly!
If you are a metal fan, then Welcome to Hell needs to be in your collection! If you can get past the rough production, than Welcome to Hell may very well be to your liking (especially if you're a thrash nut!).
