Customer Reviews:
pure, brilliant, ethereal music!.......2006-10-30
what can i say?...brilliant, beautiful music!. one of the pioneers of the goth metal music scene in northern europe, theatre of tragedy (tot) reached the pinnacle of their career with the release of this album. those who expected a hardcore metal sound will be slightly dissapointed but for the majority of the listeners, i predict "aegis " will become one of the standout albums in their record collection. highlights includes the tracks "cassandra", "lorelei" & the stunning "siren" with only one track that could be called slightly dissapointing (bacchante)...
unlike in the earlier albums, raymond rohonyithe's growls can be heard no more. instead he gives a deliberately low key performance, more talking & whispering instead of growling & grunting, with the spotlight being given to the angelic voice of liv kristine. this album is also unusual in the sense that the lyrics are written in a kind of old english prose. some may find it a bit puzzling to begin with but with repeated listening, the lyrics will soon begin to make sense. ( well, most of them at least:) )
to listen to "aegis" is to listen to tot at their peak. unfortunately the band began to lose their musical bearings with their next albums as they tried to incorporate electronic club music into their releases. with the departure of liv kristine (who is now the lead singer of "leaves eyes" by the way) even tot will now be hard pressed to duplicate a successful musical creation, the kind which can be found in "aegis"...
Stunning!.......2006-09-12
This ablum is absolutely amazing. Liv Kristine has an amazing talent, her voice is flawless. There's not a weak song on this album, and my personal favourites are Siren and Angelique, but it was hard narrowing it down. I adore this ablum, it's a shame their new direction is not quite what I had hoped it would be. ToT is nothing without Liv; Nell does not compare at all. If you like self-titled and Velvet Darkness..., definitely get this album, it's perfect!
Aegis.......2006-09-03
Perhaps it is not necessary to write a review of this album since it has obviously received its fair share of praise, but for some reason I feel as though I should contribute. The music within this cd is perhaps the most beautiful, tragic and ultimately intoxicating thing I have ever heard... It's like listening to the sounds of a lost world, a world where everything was perfect and beautiful. But, you are listening to this through the eyes of a person who lives in a terrible world of chaos and hate, thus the entwined beauty and sadness. I do not find it necessary to outline each members' role in the band, since if you took even one of them away, the effect would be lost (truely a rare thing even in the metal scene). If there is a single complaint about the entire album, the only thing I can think of is that the snare drum is a hair too loud, but that may just be a matter of personal taste anyway. Buy this album. Let yourself be hypnotized by the beauty and sadness of the Theatre of Tragedy.
A classic album.......2005-12-31
This is a superb work in both quality of recording and performance.I find myself selecting it to play over and over again from a whole pile of more recent cds by various excellent groups. If you like slow, rich, heavy, and yet sublime[I think that's the appropriate word]music, this is for you.The voice of Liv Kristine is as beautiful as ever. This is a unique cd, almost in a genre of its own.I'm looking forward to hearing the other two cds of T.O.T's early years:Velvet Darkness They Fear, and Theatre of Tragedy.I hope they are as unique as this one.The only problem is that it can put you into such a feeling of relaxation that it has a soporific effect if listened to in darkness.
"Sicker!", quoth Cassandra..........2005-04-03
This is the only Theatre of Tragedy album that really attracted my interest to pick up and buy - but I'm very glad I did! Aegis is by far one of the better gothic records of the past decade - stripped of harsh vocals and heavy riffs, offering a more exotic sound of ambient synths and the gorgeous vocals of Liv Kristine. The songs all follow a certain pattern, very slow and melodic, without managing to sound contrived. Needless to say, this isn't an album that will hook you from the first listen - Aegis deserves many rotations in your CD player to understand the quality songwriting and musicianship. It is only after these listens that such songs as "Cassandra" or the mesmerizing "Siren" start to sound appealing. That's not to say that songs such as the eerie "Aoede" and the dramatic "Venus" won't take your breath away after first listen - that's what happened in my case.
The album is definitely rounded out, of course, by Liv's vocals - which have provoked both compliments and complaints - but in my opinion are some of the best this genre has to offer (see "Siren"). Raymond Rohonyi is used for extended effect - calmer, more-spoken vocals that set the mood for tracks like "Aoede" and "Cassandra". The guitars aren't very frequent on this album, leading me to consider this as more of a gothic record than a metal one. I would recommend that anyone just starting to play guitar print out some of these tabs, as they are very easy and fun to learn. Keyboards and bass are kept to a minimum as well, although the bass is quite audible. The drums sound great and are probably the most constantly used instrument of the layered song-structure-driven album.
Definitely one of the better albums of the late nineties, by far. You can also hear Liv's lovely voice with her new band Leaves' Eyes' album Lovelorn - also a masterpiece. And make sure to watch out for her dazzling appearance on Cradle of Filth's "Nymphetamine", featured on the new Resident Evil soundtrack.
