Customer Reviews:
Not For The Faint Of Heart. Or Mind........2007-02-24
This album contains every ingredient needed to induce absolute fear. Not the type of fear as if a madman were chasing you with a knife. Nothing that trivial. This album is the brink of madness. A message so true and scary that it is not easily received in the mainstream.
Lyrically, I found the writing to be succinct, stark, intelligent and flowing. In other words: brilliant. Some of the best literature I've ever read in any medium. Simply stunning. And scary. And delightfully so.
The musical effort is too vast to try to explain, you only need listen to (hopefully) understand.
Evil Is A Spirit.......2006-12-15
I was alone and in the dark when horror seeped from my speakers into my imagination. At the end of a long metal corridor is Sunn O))), a large dark orb of pain, hate and the fear of every paralyzing dream. Its core spins violently like a tempest of knives but its movement toward me is slow, deliberate & inevitablelike the Ocean or Time or God Himself...
Evil in metal is increasingly difficult to represent convincingly. Sunn O))) remind us that evil is not tangible, its corporal. Its not a flesh eating pit fiend or something pictured on a Dio cover. Evil is a Spirit and as a spirit is something bigger than our comprehension, and thus, our ability to stop it. Therein lies its terror. There is no escape or defense from an omnipotent foe; one not bound by physics like life in a tangible form.
As such, Sunn O))) do not create Dungeons & Dragons heavy metal. Its closer to ambient music using minor keys and the sustain on a downtuned bass instead of marimbas and wind chimes. It owes as much to Terry Riley as Toni Iommi. Verbs like "lumber" and "plod" used for past doom acts don't apply here either. Sunn O))) hover, glide or even wisp. Omnipresent yet invisible, you'd be no more sure it was there if you could see it.
Black One is truely terrifying music. It is quite possibly my most terrifying experience ever observing art. It's reward is profound if you have the...Spirit for it.
A dark cave in which you will die...........2006-12-12
Misery, pain, claustrophobia, solitude, paranoia, and hate.... This album is oozing with "negativity." Fans of conventional rock music and "heavy metal" should stay far away from Sunn o))). You will not hear any catchy choruses or flashy guitar solos on this record. This music will pull you down into a downward spiral of insanity, emptiness, and misery. It is recommended that you sit alone in a dark, empty room while you listen to this record. Let this album eat away at your fragile human psyche. Just let the sounds engulf you... the slow drone of the guitars and the claustrophobic, horrifying screams of the two enigmatic USBM vocalists. Overall, this is Sunn o)))'s best release so far. Malefic and Wrest provided the vocal work and they both fit into the music perfectly. And this may seem rather bold of me to say, but Malefic in particular is one of the reasons why this album was such a groundbreaking success. His vocals fit the tone and the atmosphere of the music perfectly. His shrieks not only evoke a feeling of general uneasiness and frailty, but he completely nails the feelings of claustrophobia and paranoia flawlessly. Wrest also does a fine job on the track that he contributed to, but it is mostly Malefic who provides the outstanding vocals on this record. In the end, Sunn o))) is either a band that you are going to absolutely love or hate. They have taken the sound of Earth 2 and have evolved it to the next level.... they have made the perfect music to accompany you in your lonely, desolate, and empty cave.... They have created sounds that peel away at the layers of your fragile sanity and they have created music that will shake your psyche to the very core. This music sounds like a horrifying nightmare that you cannot wake up from....
You've awakened an ancient evil.......2006-12-11
This album rules so much, For the uninitiated this is a drone/doom metal album, it has no drums, vocals sometimes, but mostly just huge dark guitars feeding back. It is terrifying, I described to a friend as sounding like "Satan bleeding to death inside of a volcano," if that sounds at all interesting to you BUY THIS ALBUM!!!
Wow,,,.......2006-12-07
How to describe this album... It's almost impossible. Very very dark, and heavy, yet at the same time totally relaxing and atmospheric. The music builds slowly, through layers upon layers of guitar de-tuned feedback and assorted noises, till it reaches a deafening, speaker shaking crescendo that engulfs the listener utterly, like the darkest and most beautiful night you've ever seen. Any perception of what music is supposed to sound like and what it does for the listener is shaken to bits by roar of the music. Few will understand its power and craft, fewer still will enjoy. And because of this I can recommend this album to very few people. This is not an album to play for just anyone. Don't put it on for company and casual conversation, unless of course they are your in-laws and you enjoy the sight of people slowly loosing control over their minds. Be discerning and play it for one person or so at a time, finding the people who are open, and truly love music. Not many you meet will fit this category. But for the listener who's brave enough to listen to this, wonder awaits. Turn off the lights, plug in a good set of headphones and turn up the sound. It's well worth it. Highly, highly recommended.
