Customer Reviews:
Essential for any Black Metal collection.......2007-01-24
Let's be honest here. If you are a big BM fan, then this album MUST be in your collection. There is no ifs, ands or buts about it. Considered by many to be the absolute pinnacle of Black Metal, Mayhem's long in the making first full length is a barrage of barbaric, brutal and extremely cold Black Metal. We all know the stories about this band so I won't discuss that here. That is not important when reviewing the music. This album was supposed to come out as far back as 1991 but due to Dead's suicide that never happened. You can hear some of these songs played as long ago as 1988 on the rehearsals they did at the time. Truly groundbreaking at the time, had this come out in 1991 or so this could have possibly changed the face of what we then knew as BM.
You see, during that time BM was still a thrashy music style. Bathory did it perfectly, but these guys took it to the next level. Using speed picked power chords and dischorded melodies, the songs all revolve mostly around 3 or 4 central riffs, but develop into a grand symphony of death and carnage. Euronymous was no slouch when it came to writing cold riffs and his riffs present here are very raw and hateful. Hellhammer's drumming is immense and full of chaotic blast beats and thunderous double kick. Varg Vikernes of Burzum does the bass on here and he provides some catchy parts as well, especially during Life Eternal and Pagan Fears. Vocals are handled by Hungarian madman Attila Csihar, formerly of Tormentor fame (and now the current vocalist of Mayhem again.) His vocals aren't the typical BM rasp, but are very eerie and cold and his clean chants on the title track are truly disturbing. Some people don't like his vocals at all, but I find them to fit the cold nature of the music perfectly.
This album is dedicated to Euronymous and it is a fitting tribute to the legendary founder/guitarist/scene leader. I'm sure he would have been very proud of this album and even more so proud of what Mayhem has acheived in his abscene. Overall this is a classic within the Black Metal genre and it should be in every BM fans collection no questions asked.
"All my time is dedicated to the WAR and everything involved, including band and label." - Euronymous, 1993
Amazingly overrated.......2007-01-15
Supposedly this is Mayhem's best album. At least that's what one guy told me. Anyway, I really like the singer's weird voice. It sounds very evil. Most of the music is incredibly amateurish. It sounds like it took incredibly little skill to have created. The music lacks much complexity. The drums are about 85% blast beats. I gave it greater than 1 star because I really like the singer and a few seconds here and there sound good. I also really like the cover art and the images of the band members in the sleeve.
THE TRUE MAYHEM.......2006-12-14
I don't understand how anyone could say that this record is "overrated." Is it the greatest black metal record of all time? Surely not. However, to say that this record is overrated is a completely ignorant and unfounded statement considering its massive success and widespread influence. Allow me to get this out of the way first, nothing Mayhem has put out after this is relevant. It is not worth your time, but this record is definitely worth owning. This is the TRUE Mayhem with the original line up "almost" fully intact (Dead had, in fact, already blown his brains out before the recording of this record). What a pity. The only thing that stopped this band and tore it apart was death itself. You had Euronymous on guitar, Varg Vikernes on bass, Hellhammer on drums, and Attila Csihar on vocals. When all is said and done, this is a pretty grim and cold record. To me, this album serves as a perfect example of what black metal is about since it contains all of the nuances and trademarks of the genre. This album is made up of tremolo picked guitars and blast beats. It's pretty simple musically, yet effective in creating an atmosphere.
No keyboards or ambience, just a driving nihilistic rhythm that engulfs everything in obscurity and fog.
It's Like Translyanan Hunger.......2006-09-13
..Which Is Sad Seeing As This Album Is Givcen Tremendous Over Credit When Sadly It Is Alright (Nothing Comes Close To "A Blaze In The Northern Sky" & "In The Nightside Eclipse".
It Has It Moments Though And I Think WithA Different Vocalist This Could Have Been MUCH Better. Check Out Tips - BUried In Time And Dust, De Mysteriis Dom Sathans
The blackest of Metals.......2006-08-20
Mayhem's "De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas" is the most creepy, errie, and confusing album that I have ever had the pleasure of listening to. For all those that have heard the stories of Murder, Suicide, and Church Burnings surrounding the band, yes its true. If you look past all the BS you will hear and extremly wonderful piece of art. The songs lyrics are almost poetic, and the music, as complicated as it may be (there are no refrains or breaks, the songs just continue to spit out chunks of lava)is a pleaure to listen to. Even though I am not the biggest Black Metal fan, Mayhem are the gods, as far as I am concerned, even better then Darkthrone, who I thought was top notch, and then to listen to this album, man!!! I cant suggest this album enough to fans of black metal, but if you are new to black metal, this is a great place to start.
