Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Hmmm.........2006-06-14

When I heard the opening couple of tracks I was blown away, but after that it started sounding really formulaic. I got bored. It is basically just British-influenced prog-rock (it probably is British, I didn't look...it has Bruford and Hackett on it, so that's probably an indicator). I think it's in fact some of the guys from the current King Crimson band, but it lacks the immediacy of Fripp's influence I suppose. It is certainly well performed but pretty time-worn stuff. If you want to hear the real thing check out old Gentle Giant, King Crimson, PFM, Genesis (the original Genesis, not the Phil Collins pop project), ELP, etc.

5 out of 5 stars Nexus at its Best.......2005-07-28

To find out how I was introduced to Gordian Knot, please read my review on Liquid Tension Experiment's first effort. Again King Crimson plays a role in my interest with Trey Gunn accompanying Sean Malone's project. Just one listen to the acoustic guitar work juxtaposed against the electric weave in the background in "Reflections" and you'll leave this one in your daily listening regimen. Great stuff!

5 out of 5 stars Sean Malone has created a masterpiece.......2005-03-16

Often times with music I will just put it on in the background of whatever I'm doing, be it driving or work or whatever. With Sean Malone's Gordian Knot, this simply cannot be done. This album must have one's full attention devoted to it to truly appreciate it. Building off of his debut solo album titled "Cortlandt," the self-titled Gordian Knot album is Malone's most masterful work to date.
Often times when these "super-groups" of musicians form, the technical skill of the music is superb but the writing tends to be lacking. In Gordian Knot, not only does Sean Malone play bass, keyboards, and stick, but he also composes every song, so no instrument or note sounds out of place. Gordian Knot features not only Malone and Sean Reinert of Cynic, but also Trey Gunn of the infamous progressive rock band King Crimson on touch guitar, John Myung of Dream Theater on stick, guitar prodigy Ron Jarzombek of Watchtower and Spastic Ink, and the debut of guitarist Glenn Snelwar, who also co-wrote three songs with Malone and Reinert.
Every song on the album is utterly breathtaking it its own way. The album consists of nine titled tracks and one unlisted track called "Grace," which is actually featured as a live track on Gordian Knot's second album. While each song has its own unique sound, they all fit together as one collective work in the progressive genre. Some may have expected a heavier sound due to the background of the members (especially Malone, Reinert, and Jarzombek), but in no way will fans of Cynic and Watchtower be disappointed. This is an album for those who appreciate music, it is not something to head-bang to or even tap your foot to, it has to be absorbed.
Out of the dozens of CD's that I own ranging from blues to metal, Gordian Knot's self-titled album has and will always have the distinction of being the one album that I can say with complete confidence, is absolutely perfect.

5 out of 5 stars Technical and Beautiful Music.......2005-02-10

A mixture of Jazz, Rock, Metal, World, Ambient, and Classical music combine with talented people and you have Gordian Knot. All players are top-notch, and Malone as head composer, makes it all work and make sense.

5 out of 5 stars The best arranged instrumental metal/ballads cds ever!!.......2005-01-06

There are familiar forms of harmonies that you will hear borrowed from ideas of iron maiden and classical forms of music which orchestrate beautifully. I'm not saying it's not original, because there are elements in which the music arranged that is original. The songs also flow extremely well in the order of the cd. I always listen to the cd straight through without skipping songs. Sean Malone plays the chapman stick, a 10 string fingertapping instrument, a bass, and keyboards. He does an excellent job creating melodies and arranging harmonies and rhythms that really are masterful. Remember Call of Ktulu or Orion from Metallica? If you dig those songs, most likely you will really dig this Gordian Knot CD.
