Customer Reviews:
Before MTV, Imagination was it!..........2006-07-16
Wow. I just read the previous 54 reviews. Very impressive for a band that the critics weren't very kind to. This band exemplified what many of us of that era were searching for. An escape from the bubblegum manure that was playing on the radio back then. Of the entire rock and roll era, there have only been five or six albums that you could listen to the entire thing without wincing at at least one of the tracks. This was one of those albums. Before videos, very little music was capable of giving you a visual escape. But this album, and the next one "The Magician's Birthday", sent you off soaring into a mystical world of, well, "Demon's and Wizards". The lyrics only confirmed what the music promised. You could close your eyes and imagine you are there, next to the fire gazing up at the wizard as he spoke, or fending off evil in a circle of hands.
The music punctuated all the emotions you felt perfectly, and so long as you did your part, wisked you all over the complicated world that is your own mind.
I was a fan of a good many bands. Very few ever came close to this kind of mind trip. Queen, and Blue Oyster Cult are just about the only two other bands that came close. If you were born after 1980, and wondering what you really missed musically, this is it...
The only other thing I want to add is that somebody else in an earlier review praised "Paradise/The Spell" as being far superior to Led Zeppelins "Stairway to Heaven". I'm glad I'm not nearly the only one that feels that way. My sentiments exactly!...
Oh those 70's memories.......2006-06-30
Uriah Heep was one of those prog rock outfits that aspired to the popularity of groups like Yes. Bombastic multi-layered vocals, keyboards, fantasy lyrics, even cover art work by the same artist responsible for Yes covers. This album was really their peak musically and in popularity. I had about worn out the grooves on my vinyl LP back in the 70's and I doubt I would have bought the CD had it not been on sale but it sure did bring back some memories.
YOU HAD TO BE THERE !!.......2006-05-28
No doubt one of the greatest rock albums of the 70's.To see them live was one of the great concerts of my life. It was August of '72 or '73 in Portland, Maine, with a little known band backing them up called Z.Z.Top.
I remember Circle Of Hands extended to 15 minutes and Gypsy bringing down the house!
Byron's vocals were simply amazing, right up there with champion screamers like Ian Gillian, and Robert Plant.
The Hammond B3 was bellowing and Mick Box's searing guitar work brought the place to rock and roll nirvana.
I assume all who appear at this site have the album and I am sure you agree this was a classic effort all the way.
Old but great.......2006-04-28
As I get older I come back to music like this & realize how good it was. I guess i haven't listened to this for 20 years, like and old friend, 20 years was like 20 days away from an old friend, what the lyrics say is as important as the music. I beleive there are wizards here to guide us, maybe depends if you were inspired by lord of the rings ! I can't say more, if you don't get it by now. Just buy something different !! LOL
Masterpiece.......2006-02-04
Uriah Heep, one of the many wonderful seventies bands at it's best.
From "The wizard", the push of "Easy Livin'", the exquisite metal feeling of "Rainbow Demon" to the beautiful and melancolic "Circle of Hands", the great Heep fills our ears with some of the essential music that any rock lover and record collector should have.
A must.
