Customer Reviews:
MY SECOND PERSONAL FAV!!!.......2007-02-16
Words cannot describe how awesome BON JOVI is!!! I am their #1 fan and no other group in this world produces such quality / entertaining / heartfelt music. I RECOMMEND YOU BUY THESE DAYS and ALL OF THEIR CDs!!!
best ever.......2007-01-13
This is the third time I have bought this. First time was a cassette, then a cd. When my cd got bad I purchased another. Being a Bon Jovi Fan for the last twenty some years, I will tell you that this is my absolute favorite. I listen to it all the time and never get tired of it. Different than their early stuff, you might have to give it a couple a listens before deciding. Love it, love it, love it!
Bon Jovi's Best Album, Even Better.......2006-09-06
THESE DAYS, which is already Bon Jovi's best album, is even better remastered. The band sounds here like East Jersey's answer to all the great Southern rock bands of the 70s, which is not surprising when you consider Jon Bon Jovi's belief, shared with those bands, that the young Australian tourist jailed in Indonesia for drug-smuggling was unjustly convicted, which, along with his advocacy of increased funding for law enforcement, makes this album an essential purchase for both your ears AND your conscience.
deeper side of bon jovi.......2006-08-01
This album is a deeper side of Bon Jovi and it's also one of the best on my opinion.
Songs like Hey God, My Guitars Lies Bleeding In My Arms, It's Hard Letting You Go, Something To Believe In, and Diamond Ring has very deep lyrics. And This Aint A Lovesong is a very sad lovesong as it says on the title.
The only songs that really has a typical Bon Jovi sound is Something For The Pain, This Aint a Lovesong is a typical Bon Jovi ballad, and Heart's Breaking Even and Lie To Me as well.
But I like this album even though if it has a deeper sound.
By far, the best Bon Jovi album.......2006-05-30
The title of my review may put you off, but hear me out. "These Days" is a great album, and in my opinion, it marks the height of their career. Granted, they probably made this album to jump on the Grunge bandwagon and get a few more fans (and make themselves seem more mature), but that doesn't hurt the quality of the music. The lyrics are more open then any of Jon's previous works, and of course Richie's guitar is as phenomenal as ever.
Let me do a track-by-track analysis.
1. Hey God - a harder riff is the core of this rocker which has a very simple message of questioning one's faith. Not the best on the album, but nothing I would skip.
2. Something for the Pain - musically, this song sounds pretty original and catchy, but the drug-based lyrics don't seem to fit the sound of the song. Still great, nonetheless.
3. This Ain't a Love Song - something for the fans of Bon Jovi's ballads, but with a heartbreaking sadness to it. A powerful song that could easily hit home with those that could relate to it.
4. These Days - the title track is a solid song about the troubles of modern society. The lyrics are good, but far from subtle. It seems like he's trying to force the message down your throat as opposed to simply letting you feel it. Still, a good song.
5. Lie to Me - in the vein of This Ain't a Love Song, this is a lyrically powerful song about a man who is so desparate for his partner's love, that he just wants to hear that he is loved, even if it is a lie. I can't help but feel a deep sadness for the character in this song. Great stuff.
6. Damned - a bluesy, almost funky song about being the man whom a woman is cheating with. Clever lyrics and good beat here, too, but overall the track doesn't quite achieve greatness.
7. My Guitar Lies Bleeding in My Arms - the cream of the crop of this album, and one of the most heartfelt deliveries I've heard out of Jon. This track is superb. It's about the horrible downward spiral after losing someone and the apparent meaningless depression. There is some authentic 90's rock n' roll sound in this one (listen to the grunge-y guitar solo in the middle). It starts out somber and sad, but escalates into an agressive outburst of emotions. This song reminds me of Pearl Jam's "Black." It's that kind of song. I only wish they could have made it into a 7+ minute epic.
8. (It's Hard) Letting You Go - a heartwrenching, somber song about the grief of losing someone (whether it be to death, or just a lost relationship). It follows up the previous track very well... if "My Guitar Lies Bleeding in My Arms" was a rebellious cry for help, "Letting You Go" is a beaten, depressed submission. This song is great when you can relate to it, but it is best listened to in small doses.
9. Hearts Breaking Even - not quite sure why this is on the album. It continues the trend of being about breaking up, but it doesn't really pull you through any wave of emotion. It's catchy, sure. And the lyrics are pretty clever. But it seems just a little shallow for the relatively deep lyrics (deep for Bon Jovi, at least) of the rest of the album.
10. Something to Believe In - a moody, grunge-y song about losing your faith and being lost in life. It's a very strong song, and the lyrics are great, if a bit obvious. Not for everyone, but grunge fans will like it.
11. If That's What it Takes - one word: filler. It's catchy and pop-sounding, without any standout lyrics. Really doesn't fit on this album.
12. Diamond Ring - the hardest nut to crack on the album. It's slow, repetitive, and not particularly pretty. But the lyrics and unique sound will be sure to please a few people.
Overall, the album is excellent. It suffers from consistency problems, but the heavier feel to it works well for fans of grunge or Bon Jovi fans who are tired of hearing the same tired "you can do anything you believe you can do!" message over and over again. I've moved on from Bon Jovi a while ago, but this one has stuck with me.
