Customer Reviews:
Classic stuff!.......2006-11-03
Great music. You can't buy this album or any Steel Dragon songs on iTunes so buying the CD is your only option. It is loaded with the great music from the movie, including classics from Ted Nugent, Motley Crue and Kiss. Steel Dragon's "Stand Up" has now become a big sports anthem, so is a must for any music collection. "Colorful" by the Verve Pipe is a great ending to the CD - it is a beautiful, melodic piece that stays with you.
Just an Awesome soundtrack, the reason to watch the movie, Zakk attack.......2006-10-28
The movie was a suprise when it came out, not highly publisized, but a good cast in Jennifer Aniston and Mark Wahlberg. This takes place in the mid/late 1980's where Wahlberg plays a early 20's frontman to a tribute band to "steel dragons", a 70's super-metal group with erie similarities to Judas Priest, although the creators deny any tie ins. He lives at home with his parents still and is trying to "make it big" on someone elses music, and they do a good job. Low and behold he is handed the dream of a lifetime when Steel Dragon decides to get rid of their legendary frontman and starts a search for his replacement...which ends at Wahlbergs door. From here we follow his character, now known as "Izzy" to his public through through his Dream. No real suprises in this movie as far a story line (especially if you know the Judas priest story), and no acadamy awards for acting, but some good humor and Entertaining, with a Killer soundtrack. Steel Dragons is made up of, and played in the movie by, real life rock stars Zakk Wylde (Ozzy Osbourne,Black Label society), Jason Bohnam (son of Jon Bohnam of Zepplin, and Bohnam), Jeff Pilson (Dokken), Jeff Scott Soto (Yngwie Malmstein group), Nick Catonese (Black label society), Mike Matijevic (steelheart). Just an overall good movie, great music, and entertaining, especially if you are in to metal. The original music sounds fresh out of the eighties and is Killer. See the movie, buy the soundtrack, its awesome. Check it out.
Steel Dragon: a ficticious band, but real super group.......2006-10-09
Take pieces of Steelheart, Yngwie Malmsteen's Rising Force, Ozzie Osbourne, Dokken, and the son of one of the greatest drummers of all time and you have the ficticious band Steel Dragon. The tracks done by the group are great as they emulate the beloved sound of the late 80's hard rock/metal scene. "We All Die Young" has great contrast throughout. This track, as well as "Blood Pollution" and the cover of "Long Live Rock 'N' Roll" are highlighted by the booming, yet melodic pipes of Mike Matijevic. "Livin' The Life" has a great riff and a little rougher sound than most of the other tracks that is typical of the music scene at this time and "Stand Up" has an intriguing guitar solo. The latter two tracks are complimented by the rough, but bold vocals of Jeff Scott Soto.
Several other tracks from the movie are welcome additions to this CD such as "Wild Side" (Motley Crue), "Livin' On A Prayer" (Bon Jovi), and "Lick It Up" (Kiss). Stranglehold is not a bad track, but it gets a bit tedious, given that it's over 8 minutes long.
In addition, "Gotta Have It" is an instrumental track, which gives you a feel from different parts of the movie. "Colorful" is a ballad that speaks of the main character's journey and how he came back to what was most important (the one who loved him). These tracks are fine for what they are.
Now for the reasons this CD does not get a 5-star rating: Everclear (track 1) and INXS (track 12) wish they knew what rock music really was, because then they might stand the slightest chance of actually deserving to be represented on a soundtrack about rock music. At least Everclear is at the beginning so that one can easily avoid it. Songs by AC/DC & Def Leppard were in this movie and would have been better choices than these two.
Otherwise, this is one of the best soundtracks around and should be in the collection of 80's music and movie fans alike.
AWESOME SOUNDTRACK.......2006-07-09
The original songs for this movie are amazing, but the best song on the album is by far The Verve Pipe's "Colorful" which was written and sung by Verve Pipe lead singer Brian Vander Ark (who plays the Bass Player in Mark Wahlberg's original cover band in the movie). It's the song Mark Wahlberg sings at the end of the movie and its simply amazing. It's worth it to get the CD just for that song, but everything else on the soundtrack is excellent as well. A MUST HAVE
Worth a look.......2006-04-19
OK, it's hard to view this as just a bunch of songs in total isolation from the movie. But I'll give it a whirl.
The production values on this release are fine, the choice of cover songs is a little interesting though. For example Ted Nugents Stranglehold. At the part of the movie this song plays it fits nicely, but when the darn thing drones on for over eight minutes on the CD it's kinda hard to sit through.
A look at the songwriting credits (including Twiggy Ramirez according to my copy) is also interesting. This is a good release to pick up for fans of many different people. Jeff Scott Soto actually plays some of the songs off this album in his live performances. However Mike Matijevic probably actually steals the limelight a touch when he takes the mike. The band itself - Jeff Pilson and Zakk Wylde for instance, really take this to the next level.
the reason for only three stars is because it is a project and doesn't quite hang together fully. The combo of new tracks, covers of other peoples songs and also the use of original songs by other writers makes for a bit of a hodge podge.
Still, have a squiz at the players and the track listing and see how you go.
