5 out of 5 stars Whats wrong with you people???.......2006-11-18

OK metal purists SHUT UP! I cannot believe there are so much metalheads hate this band and album, this is not nu-metal you idiots, and its more real metal than metalcore! It's true the lyrics are a little EMO-like, well who cares, does any trash-metal band have better or more intelligent or emotional lyrics? Or is that a problem the vocalist can actually SING and not only growl and scream (well he also does that)?
This music is amazing, its not MTV-music or pop or mainstream, its pure heavy metal. Recommended to everyone except if you're a blinded, close-minded metalhead (*cough* Brandon Wetzel and Dr. Sniv "Robotnyik...")

Now you can click "NO"...

3 out of 5 stars First impression: solid but nothing more........2006-11-12

Let's go track by track here. This is my first impression having never heard the album before. Highlights are tracks 3, 4, 12. Low points are tracks 2, 8, and the seconds instrumental. All in all, this is played well, but not especially interesting. It has riffs that grab you and catchy melodies, but they're too few and far between.

1. A Bid Farewell - The album opens with an unimpressive slab of metalcore, that somehow feels light. The screams are decent, but the lyrics are weak and come across as lame. The guitars play a nice harmonic part in the chorus, but the mains riffs are lame. (3/5)

2. Take This Oath - Heavier than the first track, with slightly more interesting guitar parts. The drumming is unimpressive though, like it was on the last track. About 2 minutes in we hit a mellower, more melodic part, with clean singing and it's the best part of the song. It ends with some solid blastbeats and screaming which becomes melodic singing. (3/5)

3. When Darkness Falls - Kicks off with a bang. Screams and some quick heavy guitar riffs with some high notes mixed in. Best song yet. The lyrics do sound a bit contrived though. The clean singing in the chorus works, but when he sings a few lines cleanly in the verses it doesnt work. Killer verses, with a solid chorus. Only issue here is the chorus' vocals souns too nu-metal. He does sing em well though. The bridge and final chorus sound really powerful, though not heavy. It's still a good tune though.(4.5/5)

4. Rose of Sharyn - Starts nice and heavy with a catchy riff, and solid vocal work. The drumming is decent here, though it really hasnt been too great at any point thus far. This song seems more vocal driven than any of the others. Otherwise it seems like typical metalcore, although a bit lighter than one typically expects. The 2:21 mark introduces a very calm interlude, which lasts all of 10 seconds. Nevertheless it works, mostly because it breaks up what would be a duller song otherwise.(4/5)

5. Inhale - A minute-plus long interlude. It's all pretty, mellow, guitar notes and some soft acoustic strumming. It sounds nice, but if you've heard it once you dont need to hear it again. It bleeds right into the next track. (3.5/5)

6. Breathe Life - Starts off heavy. The screaming alternates speeds and volumes. We get some nice drumming here though. Really heavy. Heaviest track yet. Then the chorus opens with clean vocals and it doesnt work. The song flowed nicely with the heavy guitars and drumming. Softening it for the 10 seconds of chorus, which feature mundane lyrics, is pointless. (4/5)

7. The End of Heartache - The opening sounds like some post-hardcore sign. The drumming saves this, however the evenly spaced blastbeats becomes a bit formulaic after a while. The clean vocals are barely discernible, so when he starts screaming it's kinda nice. The song changes direction abruptly, but not fluidly. The lyrics you do hear sound bland. Lyrics are not this band's strong point. This song is five minutes of rapidly changing tones, tempos, and volumes. Aside from some solid instrumental parts, including sick guitar playing around the 2:30 mark, this could have come right off any album by a band like A Static Lullaby. Best part of the song is around the 4 minutes mark where the catchiest riffing yet on the album becomes pretty guitar notes. Then the chorus ends the song.(3/5)

8. Declaration - Nothing really too special about this song. It doesnt stand out much, except for seeming a bit weaker than the others thus far. Features a higher screaming to singing ratio. The singing isnt especially loud when he does do it and is covered in repetitive guitar riffing. (2/5)

9. World Ablaze - Again, fairly generic metalcore-ish stuff, except it's enjoyable due to the proficiency that dominates this song. No real weak links here. Very guitar driven tune, with clear bass heard with each riff. The bass has been audible before, but it really is here. It's mostly screaming, we get some singing around a minute in, but not much. All in all, though it sounds good on all ends, this song really doesnt go anywhere, like most of these tracks. (3/5)

10. And Embers Rise - Sounds like the melody that ended the previous track. This is another interlude, but it doesn't really go anywhere. Shorter, less pretty, and more boring than the last one. (2.5/5)

11. Wasted Sacrifice - Opens like a stereotypical hardcore song, before the screams take over. Bass heavy riffs here. Nevertheless the riffing is pretty catchy. The vocals are not however. He yells more than he screams or sings. And it doesn't sound good. My gripe here is by this point the clean chorus, with whiney, preachy vocals is a very tired formula. (3.5/5)

12. Hope Is... - This song somehow sounds fresher than the rest. You pray not to hear those borderline whiney clean vocals. They come in about a minute in. But they dont last too long, they're mixed with yelling, and he doesnt try to range out with them like he does on other tracks. This isnt anything special. But it aint too bad. The instruments mesh well, and the yelling helps dull the clean vocals which are becoming very boring. (4/5)

5 out of 5 stars at best very catchy.......2006-08-24

First of all would those children who are desperate for attention shut up about what bands they like as we don't care. KSE aren't hardcore, or Death Metal so why review as if they were. Obviously this band take the influences from At The Gates but they are much better than all the poseur bands out there. If you want catchy metal then these are the band for you. Hopefully this band will continue to offer twin guitar heaviness but write songs as good as these if not better.

5 out of 5 stars MY LORD GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-08-16

I have never heard such a SOLID metal album in all my life. Killswitch is by far one of my favorite bands EVER!!! It's so refreshing to hear this kind of extreme metal that has so much positive meanings in their songs, which is another reason I respect them so much.
And believe me, Howard is probably one of the best singers I have ever heard in my entire life, I don't care what you listen to. Not only can he scream like a MADMAN!!, he has one of the best voices while singing clean as well!!
If you are a metalhead like I am( probably even if your not)you can't help but love the s*** out of this album. The first one was great, but I personally think Howard has a much better voice than Jesse(no disrespect to Jesse).
Everytime I hear this CD I WANNA FIND THE NEAREST F***ING MOSH PIT AND JUMP THE F*** IN!!! These guys are extremely talented and if your not in to this hard stuff, buy it anyways and I swear to you it will grow on you. It's good stuff.
The first song that got me into them was End of Heartache which is on the 2nd Resident Evil movie. So I thought I'd by it and couldn't believe how good this album was. I thought it would be just another band with a couple of good songs. BOY WAS I WRONG!!!!Anyone who likes good music give it a chance, you will not regret it.
