Customer Reviews:
world's best metal band?.......2007-02-07
i'd go with "world's best band" period (a title they have very recently taken from the Roots in my mind).
what can i possibly say about "Leviathan" except that all you've heard about how great and awesome and essential it is, well, those things are absolutely true.
i'm here to tell you, however, that if you are going into this album expected a metal classic that is on par with, say, "Among The Living" or "Reign In Blood", well, i'd say the quality is certainly there, but the stereotypical sounds of more extreme metal are not.
think "crawling (and sprawling) brutality" as opposed to "Ludicrous speed, GO!" and maybe that'll help.
while hopefully we've covered "speed" (which really does not apply to drummer Brann Dailor, who is as AWESOME a player as i've ever heard!), i'll tell you that i find it a GREAT thing that the only way i've found to truly describe Mastodon's overall sound to my buds is by lettin' 'em hear it for themselves.
in closing, let me say that these guys are not only THE most original band making rock n' roll (of any genre) at the moment, but also my absolute favorite. Six Stars for "Leviathan". then a Seventh. then...
The best metal record of the new millenium... (thus far).......2006-12-27
In my opinion, Mastodon is the best band to come out of the metal scene in the new millenium. This album contains what I think are three of the best songs in the history of heavy music (Blood & Thunder, Iron Tusk and Hearts Alive). This is one of those albums where you can listen to the whole thing without skipping one track. They have memorable riffs, complex song structures, thought-provoking lyrics and some of the most insane drumming I've ever heard. Brann Dailor is right up there with Dave Lombardo and Mike Smith. This band has an innovative songwriting style that I just love.
Every track here is great, but particular standouts are the three songs mentioned above, plus Seabeast, Joseph Merrick, Naked Burn and Megalodon (mainly because of that country-western-style interlude, it's awesome).
I think this is better than they're new album (Blood Mountain) only by a hair. That's another good one to pick up.
Few Have Tread This Ground.......2006-09-07
Metallica. Slayer. Megadeth. Anthrax. Sepultura. These are some of the most immortal metal bands ever. Period. Mastodon arrived in this league with Leviathan and probably ascended to the heights of Kill 'Em All. Opening track Blood and Thunder is one of the best metal songs I've ever heard and the rest of the album is just as good. Plus, with the possible exceptions of Metallica and maybe, just maybe, Slayer or Megadeth, I don't think any metal band has ever attempted to fully reconcile its rage with its subject matter. Leviathan does just that, combining the lyrical imagery, power, and themes of Moby Dick with the most accomplished metal being played today.
I just caught these guys live on September 6th and I have to say they blew the heavily hyped Converge out of the water. The amazing guitar work by the tandem axemen can't be praised enough. They mirror each other perfectly and yield when necessary, while the drummer and bassist/lyricist pummel the low section. The singing was excellent, as well, with crowd participation at an all-time high for a speed-metal show.
If you like metal, and you don't own this album yet, what are you reading this review for? Get your act together. Get Leviathan.
SPLIT YOUR LUNGS WITH BLOOD AND THUNDER, WHEN YOU SEE THE WHITE WHALE!.......2006-08-26
This album gets 5 stars just for the first track. If you know anything about ambition, if you've ever read Moby Dick, or are familiar with the concept of driving over the edge chasing your dreams, even at great costs to others, and at the cost of everything you own and everything you are, then you'll feel the shivers when you hear the first track "Blood and Thunder"
I just bought this, and while I'm trying to get into the other tracks, the first one is just so ball-busting, the albums get's 5 stars, and is worth every cent.
"The kingdom of heaven is like a jewel in a field, and a man who finds it sells everything he owns to buy the land where the jewel is buried."
-Jesus
"Is there any place for the hopeless sinner, who has cursed all creation to save his own belief? No."
-Bob Marly
"Break your backs and crack your oars, men;
If you hope to prevail!"
-Mastodon
Look into the future of metal.......2006-08-13
Once every now and then an album comes along that changes the face of a certain genre of music. Leviathan by Mastodon does just that. And the great thing is that they don't necessarily change one type of metal. So many styles of metal are incorporated into one here that Leviathan is hard to classify. There are influences of industrial metal, classic metal, stoner metal, and much more. This album is simply amazing! The music is so simple yet incredibly complex at the same time. Blood and Thunder is one of the best opening tracks ever. A simple yet catchy riff melds into a killer solo. And you just can't beat a chorus that yells "White whale, holy grail!" I would list my favorite tracks, but the fact is the whole album is my "favorite track". Mastodon transitions from heaviness to melody with such ease, it makes the whole album a fun roller coaster ride of different paces of metal. Then, of course, you can't review this album and not mention the 13 minute epic "Hearts Alive". What a song! It's length gives it the ability to take the listener through different stages of music and feels like a separate story all on its own. Brann Dailor has got to be one of the top metal drummers out right now reaching seemingly inhumanly fast speeds. Some people knock the vocals on this album saying that they sound muffled or "pushed back". And some criticize the clean vocals on "Seabeast" and "Naked Burn". The vocals sound great so don't listen to those who like to criticize. There are good albums, there are great albums, and then there is Leviathan. In short, buy this now!
On an end note : Mastodon got nominated for the Ultimate Metal god award on Headbanger's Ball! Give them your vote!!
