Customer Reviews:
a treasure.........2002-08-09
As with all compilations, a couple of quibbles (what! no 'one armed boatman and the giant squid'??) but much praise for including the WHOLE of the 'nina and the dream tree' album (the last 5 tracks of this one)which is worth the price on its own. Atrue classic from a time of great invention and adventure, yet sold about 8 copies on release. Packed full of clever, often funny, often touching lyrics, blues licks and instrumental flourishes, absolutely enchanting. I had given up hope of ever finding a digital copy but here it is, along with 10 other cracking folk/blues/psychedelic gems.
Excellent - Where's Best of Andy Roberts # 2?.......2001-02-23
Andy Roberts wrote and played simply some of the best music of his time. This album contains most of the tracks from his first 3 albums "HomeGrown", "Everyone" and "Nina and the Dream Tree". Sadly, it does not contain tracks from his fabulous albums "Urban Cowboy" and "Andy Roberts and the Great Stampede", nor tracks from his work with Ian Matthews in Plainsong. What we need is another album of these tracks! If you like melodic folky-rock, great lyrics and superb guitar playing, Andy's your man! I have been looking for a CD of his for many, many years now and I am so glad to have found this! I'm now looking for the next one!
A forgotten genius.......2000-11-03
Andy Roberts has been a stalwart of English folk music since 1967, when he played with the poetry/rock ensemble The Liverpool Scene. His solo albums, represented in this collection, have long been deleted from catalogues, but are highly prized. Sadly, there's nothing here from his collaboration with Iain Matthews, with whom he formed Plainsong - another long-neglected band with a deleted classic (In Search of Ameila Earhart). Dear old Andy has played with 'em all - Roy Harper, Richard Thompson, Cat Stevens (no relation), The Bonzo Dog Band, Rolf Harris (!), and perhaps most surprisingly, Pink Floyd (that's him playing on the live version of The Wall). Perhaps fortunately, none of these outings are on this compilation either. If not the absolute best of Andy Roberts, this is a rare chance to hear a top geezer. File under "genius".
