Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A very fine CD indeed.......2005-08-30

Susan Kevra does a really great job of caller on this CD (just as she does live) The band music is also rewarding in its quality and lively dance beat. Recommended for anyone who loves contradancing.

5 out of 5 stars Where have all the fiddlers gone?.......2001-05-21

Gone to Great meadows or so it would seem. This label appears to have gathered another group of the best fiddle music talent in the New England area and has produced another outstanding CD with it. The music selected for this album is just the sort that the contra dancers of New England and other folk music followers love. The playing is of the highest quality by some of the best musicians at this style of music. A few of the tunes are accompanied by singing calls which are molodic and enhance the listening pleasure of the music, unlike other recordings with calls I have listened to. The audio engineering is also very good allowing the virtuosity of the players and their individual instruments to shine through. Given the appearance of so much good fiddle music on the Great Meadows label in recent releases, I felt I should give the CD's my Jeep torture test, a test of the quality of the physical fixation of the digital representations of the music. This involves driving a Jeep Wrangler with the CD playing in a state of the art Alpine car player through the potholes and construction anomolies of the roads of Boston and Cambridge. These were carefully crafted by local politicians to provide a wide frequency range of vibrational noise of particlar impact on short wheelbase and stiffly sprung vehicles like the Wrangler. While many CD's will repeatedly loose track and jump to neighboring localtions, becoming unplayable, I have yet to see that happen with a Great Meadows pressing. That means to me they are of very high quality. But I do have one quarrel with this CD and that is the statement on the back cover that urges the owner to "Hold your own barn dance or kitchen junket to the sounds of jigs and reels. . .". There are many good musicians out there looking for experience and support and can be obtained at low or no cost to play at a dance. Also I would hate to see the tradition of live music at our dances become eroded with the canned variety. New England's Modern Western Square Dance community dances to canned music and is having a struggle to keep going in many instances. I want the tradition of dance and live music to flourish. With that in mind it might be nice to include a coupon for ordering copies of the sheet music for the selections - this would allow aspiring musicians to practice alongside some of the best. But the back label does not affect the great listening value of this CD which I would lighly reccommend.
