Intelligent Songwriting At Its Peak..........2005-02-06
To hell with any preconceived notions about "bluegrass" music that you might have, Mike West (and Truckstop Honeymoon, his current group when they got time away from the chitlin's) is one of the most fascinating bands I've ever seen. His musical ability and talent for honing in on American and Southern culture goes beyond the realm of anything you've heard before. The most insightful mind I've experienced in my life make any of his purchases a must have, you won't stop at one...and he's one prolific son-of-a-gun.
Ish of Lafayette.......2002-06-19
Observing human nature and capturing it in songs is a rare gift, few people can truly master. Billy Bragg comes to mind as an individual with such a skill. Mike West is another. This album captures many of the nuances of Louisiana, albeit in a 'New Orleans Bluegrass' musical style. The lyrics of this album are both funny and insightful. The playing of the banjo, mandolin and other curious 'musical devices' (like sandpaper!) are phenomenal. If you don't know Mike's music, buying this album is no risk. Trust me. It will rapidly become a favorite. For those interested in Louisiana, I would recommend the track "Americans". It will soon be a Louisiana classic.
The Best of West -- so far............2001-03-22
If you don't know who Mike West is, this is a great CD to start your West collection. I guarantee you'll want more. "Home" is Mike's best effort yet, and as much as I enjoyed "Redneck Riviera" that's a bold statement. Mike West is a rocker-turned-hillbilly that plays out of New Orleans, primarily with his wife Myshkin, an excellent performer in her own right. On "Home" Mike occasionally puts down the "Drill and Banjo" used so often in his last CD and blends more guitar and mandolin into the mix. "New Jersey", "Mississippi", "Squirrels", and "God Is Down in Oklahoma" are especially strong tunes, but in reality, there isn't a weak song on the CD. Even if you're like me (I'm a rocker by trade and not a big bluegrass or folk fan) you've got to appreciate the wit and wisdom that Mike brings to his CD's. Great Job Mike!!
